Abstract

The ability to translate from foreign languages is important, especially for English Education which is closely related to foreign languages. Translation is needed because students have to get information and knowledge for everyday life. The objective of this research is to describe the English-Indonesian translation procedures were used in translating narrative text. This research has used descriptive qualitative method. This research has been conducted at STKIP Muhammadiyah Bogor with the population of 6th semester students of English Education Department and consists of 5 samples taken using a purposive sampling technique. This study used students’ translation results and interview for data collecting technique. The result of this study, the writer found 266 translation procedure has used by participant, consist of transposition 159 cases, modulation 51 cases, adaption 11 cases, transference 0 case, addition 22 cases, reduction 15 cases, descriptive equivalent 5 cases, and naturalization 3 cases, and the difficulty in translating the text is the discovery of new vocabulary and the arranged of a word into a sentence.

Abstract

There are two main competences that should be developed during the language learning process, Grammatical Competence and Communicative Competence. The former deals with the ability to generate and construct some types of grammatical sentences, while the latter is the actual use of language in a real situation, and in various kinds of language use in different context. Once the students can master the rules of sentence structure, but they are not sucessful at being able to use the language in menaingful communication. For those reasons, the language teacher should design the learning process that encourage their student to speak and communicate actively. Daily language activities is one way which is hoped that both competences, especially the communicative competence can be reached in foreign language learning. The students, then, understand how to vary the language use according to the setting and their purpose to speak. This qualitative research aimed to describe the language teaching model through daily language activities implemented in Pesantren, in order to help the students master the communicative competence well. In collecting the data the researcher used observation and indepth interview to know the real condition of the teaching method and strategies used by Pesantren in teaching the foreign language, and some factors affecting the success of language teaching. Finally, the findings showed that the daily language activities can improve the students’ communicative competence.

Abstract

This research is qualitative research. The objective of the research is to determine the students' ability in writing application letters and analyzing grammatical error in writing application letters. The subject of the research is twelfth grade students of SMK Pertiwi, located in Cibungbulang-Bogor. The purposive sampling is sample to determine the class that would treatment. Purposive sampling is sampling based on certain considerations such as population characteristics or previously known characteristics. The sample of the research is the twelfth-grade students consisting of 10 students from two classes. The data collecting technique of the research used questionnaire and writing test. The result of the research from the data, the writer described the percentage based on the type of error. First, omission, there were 10 errors of omission that found on the students` writing application letter. The percentage of omission error was 77%. Second, There were 6 errors of misformation. The percentage of misformation error was 46%. Third, addition. There were 4 errors of addition. The percentage of addition error was 31%.. Last, misordering. There were 2 errors of misordering. The percentage of misordering error was 15%. Based on the results that the students still have so many lack of vocabulary, lack of understanding on grammar, they though English was very difficult because it was a foreign language. Students also realized that they still had luck of grammar mastery, and practice
