Abstract

Theoretically, the ultimate goal of any language learning including EFL (English as a Foreign Language) is to communicate, that is toexchange ideas, knowledge, and information. Among the fourlanguage skills the learners pursue in their language learning, theyoften value speaking more than the other skills – reading, writing, and listening. Some studies show that despite learners’ strong motivation to learn and practice speaking in English, on manyoccasions they turn out to stay silent (instead of saying passive) rather than struggle to make any attempt to speak words. Exploringany possible factors causing this phenomenon to happen is of agreat value for teaching practitioners as it is commonly believedthat speaking is interconnected with other skills. Therefore, thedevelopment in speaking is likely resulted in the development ofthe other language skills. In relation to the above issue, hence, this short article tries to examine factors affecting EFL learners’ speaking performance and to identify some feasible ways of coping with the demotivating factors of the speaking performance. Drawing from some literature reviews it was found that EFL learners’ speaking performance may stem from three major aspects, namely linguistics, socio-cultural, and affective factors which includes motivation and personality aspects such as anxiety, selfesteem, inhibition, risk-taking, empathy, and extroversion

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to discuss some basic theories and previous research on student’s perception of memrise application to improve vocabulary mastery. A vocabulary is an essential tool for mastering all English skills. However, the fact shows that this part of the English language has been neglected, and due to inappropriate learning methods, it affects the students' lack of vocabulary, thereby exacerbating this phenomenon. To overcome this problem, online learning media is the most appropriate solution for students to learn vocabulary individually. Memrise is a learning media that is believed to help students learn English independently. Memrise is a mobile learning application that can expand students' vocabulary outside the classroom. In addition, Memrise is built into the educational application, so it will provide students with an enjoyable learning experience. Therefore, this paper explains vocabulary theory and types of vocabulary learning media here. Apart from that, this article will answer some questions about why students should use memrise and How do students apply the application. Previous research will be given in the next discussion to emphasize students' perceptions of the Memrise application. Then, this paper is expected to provide suggestions for English students to use good mobile-assisted language learning to expand their vocabulary.

Abstract

This research is a kind of survey and aims to find out and analyze empirically the effects of student’s perception on using authentic material and autonomous learning towards student’s collocation awareness. The observed population of this research is students of private vocational schools in Bogor. The sample was gained through simple random sampling, which means that the researcher mixed the subjects in the population so that they will be considerably the same. This research has 3 variables which are divided into 2 independent variables (student’s perception on using authentic material and autonomous learning) and 1 dependent variable (collocation awareness). The collection of the data is done by questionnaire and objective tests for both independent and dependent variables. The gained data was then analyzed by using correlation technique and multiple regressions. Previously, the prerequisite tests before examining the regression test must be accomplished, such as normality test and linearity test. The result of this research is: 1) There are significant effects of student’s perception on using authentic material and autonomous learning altogether towards student’s collocation awareness and it is proved by Fo = 42.383 and Sig.=0.000 < 0.05; 2) There is a significant effect of student’s perception on using authentic material towards student’s collocation awareness and it is proved by to = 4.889 and Sig.=0.000 < 0.05; 3) There is a significant effect of autonomous learning towards student’s collocation awareness and it is proved by to = 5.188 and Sig.=0.000 < 0.05. It means that the student’s collocation awareness is strongly influenced by student’s perception on using authentic material and autonomous learning of his/her own..

Abstract

This study focused on the effect of the use of Skimming Techniques on the Reading Comprehension of eleventh grade students of TKJ SMK Pelita Ciampea. The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of the use of Skimming Techniques on the Reading Comprehension of Eleventh grade TKJ SMK Pelita Ciampea. This research used quantitative research using Pre-test and Post-test. The writer used normality test, homogeneity test, and T-test. The result of the post-test showed that the experimental class after giving treatment had significouldt effect. To measure t-test result the writer used formula for a 0,05% with df 25+25 - 2 = 48, it was gained ttable with a = 0,05 = 1,67793 and tcount = 13,483. Thus, tcount > t table (13,483 > 1,67793). From the result of t-test the writer concluded that H0 was rejected and Ha was accepted. Based on the result Improving Students’ Reading Comprehension In Learning English Narrative Text Through Skimming Technique is very significouldt. It is proven that Narrative Text through Skimming Technique was effective in students' reading comprehension
