Abstract

The very fast development of information technology has brought many changes to university libraries. Libraries should be able to deal with those changes by implementing appropriate strategy, otherwise it would be neglected by its users. Using SWOT and IT Balanced Scorecard qualitative approach, this study aims to result in information technology strategic planning implemented in Usakti Library. This study showed that the internal condition of Usakti Library is within average category. Meanwhile the external condition is in a medium category. The SWOT analysis resulted in ten strategies. For each strategy, measurement, target and its initiative strategy was set. Abstract

Thesauri contain words or terms that are used as a tool to identify a concept or an idea precisely and correctly. The advantage of thesauri is because they are considered as better tools to find out information or document with a high degree of invention and precision. Thesauri are invaluable tools for analysts in deciding descriptors as keywords of a document. In accordance with its structure or composition, thesaurus of biotechnology consists of three parts: a hierarchy, an alphabetic, and an index. The relationships of terms from specific (narrow terms) to general (broad terms) are shown in the structure of the hierarchy. The next structure is an alphabetic, which is a form-changed from hierarchical thesaurus that is re-arranged alphabetically. The relationship between one term and other terms is shown, based on specificity level of a term meaning. The last structure is index. It is made by a team to help users browse terms in thesaurus quickly. Each of the terms will appear in alphabetical sequence with different frequencies.

Abstract

This research aims to determine: the rank of authors of LIPI and BPPT whose articles are mostly cited by other authors, the type of publications, the level of collaboration, the productivity level of authors, the coverage areas, and the topics contained in the scientific work through the subject analysis. The data were obtained from Google Scholar from 2004 to 2008. The collected data were then analyzed by using ‘co-word’ analysis. The ‘co-word’ structure was known after the mapping using bibliometric method. A total of 593 analyzed scientific papers consist of 472 from LIPI and 121 from BPPT. The results show that the highest citation number (100 citations) comes from LIPI scientific papers, while BPPT scientific papers are 36 citations. Most types of publication produced by LIPI and BPPT are from journal articles and papers, each of 235 documents (49.79%) and 101 documents (21.40%) by LIPI and 71 documents (58.68%) and 42 documents (34.71%) by BPPT. LIPI researcher collaboration level was 0.82 and BPPT was 0.89. The most productive LIPI researcher in writing paper is Danny Hilman Natawidjaya (Geotechnology Research Center) with 31 scientific papers, while BPPT is Yusuf Surachman Djajadihardja with 34 scientific papers. The most dominant topic written by LIPI researcher is basic science or pure science i.e. 63.56%, with details: biology 131 documents (27.75%) followed by geology 121 documents (25.64%), chemistry 47 documents (9.96%) and mathematics 1 document (0.21%). The topic most widely written by BPPT researchers is the field of applied research i.e. 56.19% with the details: environment 33 (27.27%), engineering 27 (22.31%), biotechnology 5 (4.13%), food technology 2 (1.65%) and fisheries 1 document (0.83%). The relationship among the topics is shown in the line among the descriptors on each field. More relation lines among descriptors, the closer the relationships among documents.

Abstract

Study of reference usage analysis on final report of LIPI‘s Competitive Research (2003 -2007) has some goals, i.e to find out: kinds and sources of document which were cited, also median half life of document used by researchers as references. This research focused on 3 fields of research areas, i.e: East Kalimantan and Bangka Belitung (EKBB), Product, Comodities, and Technology (PCT), and Border Region of East Nusa Tenggara (BRENT). Data was obtained by recording the research titles and all of the references used by researchers on the final research reports. All recorded data including information resources, such as books, journals, proceedings, thesis, etc, then tabulated, grouped, and presented on tables. The results show that total citation in the area of: EKBB, PCT, and BRENT are 580, 260, and 147 respectively. The most citation is coming from foreign literatures. The author also found that many researchers still did not write down their references carefully, for examples no publication date and no access date (for internet sources). Median half life for all the research fields is ≥ 10 years.

Abstract

A library has a principal role as a place to obtain the necessary information and data needed by users. Most users need the latest information. The increasing demand of the recent information needed by user is not balanced with the availability of collections owned by the library. The limitation of collections in the library requires the librarians to dig up more necessary information from various sources in the worldwide. This makes librarians work harder to access the various sources of the information online. Many users need information about standards, while most librarians do not understand how and where they can access the information. This paper discusses the sources of the latest information standards accessible by librarians easily.

Abstract

The Library 2.0 terminology was coined in 2005 by Michael E Casey in his blog entitled Library Crunch. This article discusses the implementation of Library 2.0 concept, as a continuation of the previous article by the same author which had introduced the concept. Basically, Library 2.0 is an application of Web 2.0 for library purposes. It based on two fundament¬als that are: the strength of participation and the sophisticated of information technology. For library, theses forces based on three basic transformations i.e.: from book centered to human centered, from users oriented to users centered, and from information management to knowledge management. To discuss the implementation of the concept, the author did not start from the scratch, but looking other libraries that already had undertaken the effort. Examples are taken from USA, Australia, and China. Finally, the author discusses the possibility of Indonesian Librarians to implement the Library 2.0 concept. In addition the author also gives some suggestions.
