Abstract

Movies function as mass media that represent reality in society. For example, the issue of human trafficking that often occurs is told in the movie "Cross the Line" (2022). In this study, the movie "Cross the Line" is used as a subject to look for representations of human trafficking. This research uses predetermined theories to find the meaning of signs in several scenes of the movie. Using Roland Barthes' semiological model, data analysis was conducted through three stages of signification: denotation, connotation, and myth. This research concludes that: (1) Denotation in the film is shown with human trafficking behavior through manipulation representation, slavery representation, representation of doing anything to get money, smuggling representation. This is reflected in the harsh background and storyline of the movie, depicting life on the ship. (2) Connotation is characterized in the film by real human trafficking in society, where the poor are always positioned as helpless and become victims of human trafficking. (3) Myth is characterized in the film by the fact that the representation of human trafficking is formed by social inequality in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study examines the visual representation of mental health in the television series "Parasyte: The Grey". Utilizing Charles Sanders Peirce's semiotic analysis approach, the research aims to uncover how aspects of mental health are visualized and interpreted within the context of the series' narrative. A qualitative research method is applied, with data collection techniques including documentation, observation, and literature study. Data analysis is conducted using Peirce's semiotic table consisting of sign, object, and interpretant, with a specific focus on character expressions and visual elements representing mental health conditions. The findings reveal that "Parasyte: The Grey" employs various visual signs to depict a spectrum of mental health conditions, ranging from anxiety and trauma to healing processes. These visual representations not only reflect contemporary understandings of mental health but also contribute to broader discourses on mental health representation in visual media. This research provides new insights into how television series can play a role in shaping public perceptions of mental health through complex and nuanced visual representations.

Abstract

This study aims to identify and analyze the organizational communication patterns between leaders and employees in the Planning Bureau of the Ministry of Trade of the Republic of Indonesia. The communication patterns identified include the Wheel Pattern, Y Pattern, Chain Pattern, and All-Channel Pattern. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method with observation and interviews as data collection techniques. The data obtained were then analyzed using data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing techniques to obtain a clear picture of the communication patterns implemented in the organization. The results show that organizational communication in the Planning Bureau of the Ministry of Trade is effective with the application of various communication patterns. The Wheel Pattern is used to channel information from the leader to the team leader, who then conveys it to the staff. The Y Pattern shows a clear communication hierarchy, while the Chain Pattern represents horizontal communication that allows information dissemination among individuals in equivalent positions. The All-Channel Pattern is used to maintain communication synergy among all elements within the organization, both formally and informally. However, there are several obstacles in the application of these communication patterns that may reduce the optimal flow of information and employee motivation. Therefore, increasing the effectiveness of communication within the organization is necessary to support the welfare and productivity of the company.
