Abstract

Puja Mandala in Nusa Dua, Bali, is a complex of five houses of worship within a single area that offers a unique phenomenon—not only representing interreligious dialogue but also serving as an icon of tolerance. This paper aims to examine how Puja Mandala is interpreted by the public as a symbol of tolerance and how such perceptions are represented through interactions on social media. This study is important to understand the extent to which religious symbols such as Puja Mandala truly function as representations of tolerance rather than merely architectural constructs. Using a mixed-method approach, the analysis was conducted on 2,277 comments from YouTube and TikTok through sentiment analysis combined with library research. The findings show that positive (49.5%) and neutral (50.15%) comments dominate, while negative comments account for only 0.35%, confirming that the public tends to appreciate the diversity embodied in Puja Mandala. The main contribution of this study lies in its effort to bridge the discussion between religious architecture and public perception. This research demonstrates that religious symbols not only function within physical spaces but also disseminate the notion of tolerance on social media, with practical implications for strengthening interfaith harmony in Indonesia.

Abstract

This article examines how Islam, as one of the central components of Bangladesh's national identity, influences its foreign policy. Based on secondary sources and employing an identity politics framework grounded in the concept of the ummah, this paper argues that Bangladesh’s external relations are influenced not only by material interests and geopolitical considerations but also by religious values and political uses of Islamic identity. Through historical analysis and case studies, including relations with Muslim-majority states such as India and Pakistan, as well as the Israel–Palestine conflict, the study demonstrates how religious affinity, the roles of political parties in government and opposition, and economic interdependence interact to shape foreign relations. The findings demonstrate that religious identity serves as both a normative guide and a political resource, with its impact mediated by the ruling party's ideology and strategic interests. The contribution of this article is to broaden the debates on the role of religion in the foreign policy-making process in third-world nations, particularly in Muslim-majority countries.

Abstract

Over the past 20 years, research on Islamic pacifism, particularly in its post-Islamist branch, has considerably expanded. The recent Islamist violence has compelled many researchers to explore and examine the moral underpinnings of Islamic pacifism. Nevertheless, no research has been conducted on the contribution of the Syrian thinker Khāliṣ Jalabī (born in 1945). Yet, Jalabī's criticism of Islamist violence, his work on the need for societal change, and the requirement of a scientific-historical approach to the Islamic legacy are all very significant and deserve careful consideration. Through a textual analysis and critical engagement, this article studies the promises and limitations of his post-Islamist ethics, especially in the current transformations in Islamic thought.

Abstract

This article examines the epistemology of Sufism (tasawuf) of Datuk ri Tiro, one of the key figures in the spread of Islam in Tiro, Bulukumba, and South Sulawesi in the 17th century. This study aims to understand how the structure of Sufi knowledge taught by Datuk ri Tiro was formed, validated, and practiced in the daily life of the Tiro community. This study employs a qualitative approach through library research by reviewing historical sources and academic works related to the Sufism of the Indonesian archipelago. The findings show that the epistemology of Sufism of Datuk ri Tiro is constructed through three main pillars: (1) the sources of Sufi knowledge rooted in the Minangkabau–Aceh tradition as well as Bugis–Makassar local wisdom; (2) methods of acquiring knowledge based on inner experience through dhikr, self-purification, and spiritual discipline; and (3) epistemic validity criteria grounded in purity of heart, continuity of dhikr, and the internalization of shari‘ah–tarekat–haqiqat–ma‘rifat. This study affirms that the epistemology of Datuk ri Tiro’s Sufism is not merely a historical legacy, but also a knowledge model relevant for strengthening spirituality and ethics in contemporary Muslim society.

Abstract

Instagram has become a social media platform used for preaching. One example is the @lensamu account belonging to the Muhammadiyah organization. This study aims to analyze the sharia preaching messages on the Muhammadiyah Instagram account @lensamu. The study uses a qualitative paradigm with a descriptive content analysis method based on Klaus Krippendorff's Content Analysis concept. The research period was during the month of Ramadan 1446 AH (February 28–March 30, 2025). The results showed that there were 26 pieces of content that fell into the category of Sharia preaching messages, which were divided into two main categories, namely worship and society. In the worship category, the preaching messages covered the themes of faith, prayer, zakat, and fasting, which aimed to encourage an increase in the quality of worship during Ramadan. Meanwhile, in the social category, the da'wah messages focused on muamalah aspects that emphasized social roles and encouraged doing good to others. Overall, the da'wah content of @lensamu was oriented towards strengthening personal worship and forming social ethics in line with the values of amar ma'ruf nahi munkar.
