Abstract

Character conflicts are divided into two, namely external and internal conflicts. This study aims to describe the conflict of the main character, Tatsuro Kuraki, and analyze the cause of the conflict in the novel Hakuchō to Kōmori by Keigo Higashino. This research uses a structural approach with a descriptive qualitative method. The analysis shows that one of the main characters' external conflicts is between Tatsuro Kuraki and Shozo Haitani. Tatsuro accidentally grazed Haitani, so Haitani threatened to report Tatsuro. Furthermore, internal conflict is in the form of Tatsuro's guilt towards the Asaba family, who were victims of police misapprehension in the case of Haitani's death. Furthermore, one of the factors causing conflict in Tatsuro's character is Tatsuro's pity for Shiraishi, who is still a teenager, so he covers up the murder of Haitani committed by Shiraishi. The overall conflict that occurs in the main character has a significant influence on the formation of the plot and other elements in the story.

Abstract

This research examines the internal conflicts experienced by Nonoguchi Osamu in Keigo Higashino's novel Akui through the lens of Sigmund Freud's psychoanalytic theory, which comprises three key aspects: the id, ego, and superego. The study adopts a qualitative descriptive method, with data collection techniques including close reading and note-taking.  The findings reveal that Nonoguchi Osamu's internal conflicts are predominantly ego-driven. His ego motivates him to undertake extreme actions for personal benefit, including killing his friend, fabricating evidence, and tarnishing his friend's reputation as a successful young writer.  Furthermore, Nonoguchi's internal turmoil is exacerbated by his fear of his dark past being uncovered. However, his superego also exerts influence, reflecting his retention of moral values. This is evident in his hesitations to commit murder and his lingering concern for his friend. Ultimately, Nonoguchi accepts the consequences of his actions, illustrating the intricate interplay of the id, ego, and superego in shaping his psychological conflicts.

Abstract

This study explores the internal conflicts within the personality structure of the Atsuko in Minato Kanae's novel Shojo through a literary psychological perspective. The research aims to examine how Atsuko’s psyche is shaped by her complex interactions with other characters and her environment. By utilizing Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalytic theory, particularly the concepts of the id, ego, and superego, this study analyzes how Atsuko’s internal conflicts stem from her reactions to external pressures and her personal desires. The study focuses on Atsuko’s struggles with her identity, her relationships with others, and her psychological responses to the events in the narrative. By applying psychological literary criticism, the research provides insights into how the character’s mental state is intricately portrayed, offering a deeper understanding of the human psyche and its representation in contemporary literature. Ultimately, this study highlights the intersection between psychology and literature, illustrating how fictional works can reflect real psychological experiences and conflicts.

Abstract

In the era of globalization, the Japanese language has increasingly absorbed foreign vocabulary, particularly English, a phenomenon known as Gairaigo. This can be observed across various fields, including in the dialogues of the anime Yuru Camp Season 1 (2018), which depicts the use of Gairaigo in outdoor activities. This study aims to analyze the formation and meaning of gairaigo in Yuru Camp Season 1 (2018) through a morphosemantic approach based on Nomoto’s (2019) theory of gairaigo formation. Gairaigo refers to vocabulary borrowed from foreign languages, particularly English, into the Japanese language. In this research, the researcher uses a descriptive qualitative method to describe and analyze the formation patterns and semantic shifts of gairaigo in the anime. Data were collected through the observation and note-taking technique from the dialogues of 12 episodes of the anime under analysis. The results show that there are 20 gairaigo data points, encompassing various formation categories such as grammatical adaptation, abbreviation, creation (wasei-gairaigo), and konshugo (a combination of wago or kango with gairaigo). The findings suggest that gairaigo in Yuru Camp is not only used in everyday conversation but also undergoes various shifts in meaning depending on the context and usage within popular culture. This study is expected to provide new insights into the role of gairaigo in audiovisual media and how its adaptation process occurs in modern Japanese language.

Abstract

This study analyses the use of figurative language in The Book 1 album lyrics by YOASOBI through a semantic approach. Figurative language, including metaphor, personification, simile, and hyperbole, is crucial in enhancing song lyrics' emotional depth and artistic expression. This research explores how these figurative elements contribute to meaning-making and emotional engagement in the songs. A qualitative descriptive-analytical method focused on semantic analysis of selected lyrics. The data consist of seven songs from the album The Book 1, which were analysed through document analysis to identify patterns of figurative language. Each instance of metaphor, personification, simile, and hyperbole was categorized based on its linguistic structure and contextual function within the lyrics. The findings reveal that metaphors in YOASOBI’s lyrics establish strong symbolic imagery by connecting abstract concepts with concrete objects. Personification is used to attribute human qualities to non-human entities, intensifying emotional resonance. Simile explicitly compares two distinct elements to clarify feelings, while hyperbole amplifies emotions to create dramatic effects. These devices collectively enrich the meaning of the lyrics, allowing listeners to experience a deeper emotional connection to the songs. The study concludes that YOASOBI’s use of figurative language enhances their music's aesthetic and emotive aspects, making their lyrics more impactful and immersive.
