Abstract

In S1 Japanese Literature Study Program at the universities in Indonesia today, in addition to the general language competence, there are 3 main competencies namely linguistics, literature, and culture. The curriculum is then compiled with various lesson compositions to support these 3 competencies. Based on the research conducted in 2016-2017, the lessons for students in years 1 and 2 are generally focused on improving language skills. At the next level, the students are begun to be directed to the 3 fields mentioned earlier so that the final task in form of the thesis will adjust to the selected field of competencies. Teaching the literature of Japan on S1 Japanese Literature Study Program in Indonesia can be said to have not been well developed compared to the teaching of language or linguistic fields. The same thing happened with the studies that took the object of Japanese literature. Based on the results of the study, the main obstacle is the absence of Magister or doctoral program for this field in Indonesia so that the number of teachers with Japanese Literature background is still minimal when compared to the field of language education or Japanese Linguistics. In 2017, Kemristek DIKTI issued Permenristekdikti No 15 of 2017 concerning the adjustment of study program name according to the clusters of knowledge that give effect to S1 Japanese Literature Study Program throughout Indonesia. There are 4 choices, namely Japanese Language, Japanese Language and Culture, Japanese Literature, and Japanese Studies. This change made Study Program make several changes in accordance with the name while still prioritizing on the work prospects of graduates after graduation. This change 57 has become the major challenge for the development of Japanese Literature teaching and research in Indonesia. This paper aims to give an overview of Japanese Literature teaching at the university and the form of changes that have occurred in the current Japanese Literature teaching curriculum at the universities in Indonesia. Abstract

The novel is one of the most popular forms of literature that serves as a medium for authors to represent their characters. Novels are literary works that can represent the life of society and a means of criticizing the social phenomena witnessed by the author. One of the novels that illustrates the social phenomenon of alienation in Japanese society is Ningen Shikkaku by Dazai Osamu. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach to analyze social phenomena in Ningen Shikkaku to identify the phenomenon of alienation using Melvin Seeman's theory of alienation, which is grouped into five aspects, including powerlessness, meaninglessness, normlessness, social isolation, and self-estrangement experienced by the main character Yozo Oba. The results show that the five aspects of alienation experienced by Yozo gradually became primarily relevant to what happened in Japanese society at that time. His father controls Yozo's life, and he does not know what he wants and does not want, so he lives a life without meaning and purpose. Yozo is also dominated by feelings of emptiness or loss of meaning, which leads to a desire to end his life. Yozo also experiences social isolation and alienation. In Japanese society, suicide or hikikomori as an effect of alienation, like Yozo's, is common until now.

Abstract

Abstract. Literature became one of the propaganda tools of the Japanese military government during the Japanese occupation of Indonesia (1942-1945). This research focuses the object of study on four short stories and one play written by Japanese writers published in Djawa Baroe magazine (1943-1945), including "Kitjizo Kemedan Perang" by Hino Ashihei, "Ditempat Asoehan Garoeda" by Niwa Fumio, "Batoe" by Kawai Tetsukichi and "Perkawinan 25 Tahoen" by Sasaki Takamaru. The qualitative descriptive method was used to analyze data on each writer's background and the original versions published in Japan to examine the reasons and significance for selecting the five works. The findings show that four writers, Hino Ashihei, Niwa Fumio, Kikuchi Kan, and Sasaki Takamaru, had produced many works and were well-known writers in Japan. Meanwhile, Kawai Tetsukichi was a newcomer writer, but his work "Batoe" was considered new and attracted the editor of Chūōkōron magazine. Furthermore, research on the original versions of the five works published in Japan discovers that all five works were published in Japan between 1938 and 1943 and then republished in Djawa Baroe from January 1, 1944, to March 15, 1944. Some original works are short and almost the same as those published in Djawa Baroe, but some were long novels, so only small parts were published in Djawa Baroe.  However, the versions published in Djawa Baroe contained significant propaganda parts of each work and were suitable for Djawa Baroe's readers during the war. The writer`s reputation and the contents of each work were the main reasons the works were selected for publication in Djawa Baroe.  Keywords: Djawa Baroe, Japanese literature, Japanese Writer, Asia-Pacific War

Suzume no Tojimari, a Japanese novel by Makoto Shinkai, explores themes of loss, trauma, and post-disaster hope, which have elicited diverse responses from readers on the digital platform bookmeter.com. This study aims to analyze how readers perceive the novel’s central themes, especially natural disasters, reflections on life, hope, the future, and interpersonal relationships, by employing a descriptive qualitative method and Hans Robert Jauss's reception theory. The findings reveal that readers engage not only with the plot but also relate it to their own life experiences, turning the novel into a dynamic dialogical space between text and reader. This study also highlights the significance of the reception approach in understanding readers’ emotional engagement with contemporary literary works.
