Abstract

The revolutionary changes taking place in our rapidly developing society today require the widespread use of technical means that ensure adequate use of information in the educational process. It is relevant today to use mobile gadgets in the learning process in order to solve all kinds of pedagogical problems. The reasons for using mobile devices in education are many. For example, at any time, regardless of location, you can engage in self-education; a game form that arouses more interest than classical organizational forms of learning; the ability to accurately control attendance; the possibility of conducting a “five-minute” knowledge control, the possibility of taking independent and homework in electronic form, which forces all students to prepare for each lesson; the ability to collect statistical data, analyze the dynamics of mastering educational material from different positions: each student, the whole group, academic subject, teacher; more efficient exchange of important information between participants in the educational process and others. This article talks about the possibilities of mobile applications in education and the thoughts of great scientists about technical means in the educational process.

Abstract

The study investigated the effect of classroom environment on student’s academic achievement and retention in Basic Science at the upper education level. The study adopted a quasi-experimental design of pretest-posttest, and posttest non-equivalent control group design. Four research questions and four corresponding null hypothesis guided the study. The population of the study was all the upper basic two students in public secondary schools in Enugu State, Nigeria. Two intact classes of Upper Basic Two (JSS2) students were purposively assigned to experimental and control groups. A sample size of 72 upper basic two students was used for the study. A 25-item Basic Science Test (BSAT) was designed by the researchers and used for data collection. Face and content validation were carried out by experts in Basic Science and Measurement and Evaluation. The instrument was trial tested using Kuder-Richardson reliability formula 20 (K-R 20) to determine the reliability coefficient index of 0.85 for the instrument. Mean and standard deviation was used to answer the research questions while Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) was used to test the null hypotheses at a 0.05 level of significance. The result of the study shows that students exposed to treatment achieved and retain greater knowledge than their counterparts that were denied treatment. It was recommended that low achievers in Basic Science need to be involved more through increased interaction with teachers in the form of makeup classes, tutorial classes, or special coaching.

Abstract

The study evaluated the enactment of the Social Studies curriculum in junior secondary schools within Kogi State, specifically highlighting discrepancies between the intended curriculum and its practical application. Two primary research questions and hypotheses were formulated, adopting a descriptive research methodology with a survey design. The participants comprised male and female educators from public secondary schools in Kogi State. Utilising the Taro Yamene method, a sample of 341 Social Studies teachers was drawn from a total population of 2328. Stratified sampling was used in selecting 114 schools from 58;, thereafter, 147 males and 194 females’ teachers were randomly selected. A 22-item rating scale was the major data collection tool, segmented into parts A-E. Data analysis, incorporating mean, standard deviation, and the z-test (with a 0.05 significance level). The study identified critical gaps in curriculum implementation. These encompassed inadequate content selection and sequencing, and a neglect of innovative pedagogical techniques. While foundational social studies concepts were emphasised, cultural values and health issues were sidelined. Factors contributing to these discrepancies included teacher apathy, insufficient oversight by educational inspectors, and subpar introductory strategies to engage students. To bridge these gaps, recommendations included optimising content coverage, providing modern instructional tools, enhancing the learning environment, and mitigating teacher and student absenteeism. Furthermore, curriculum revisions to address societal issues and the consistent use of student-centred teaching methods were advocated. Regular principal oversight was emphasised to ensure effective teaching practices.

Abstract

Language is created by society, and its fate is closely related to the fate of society. Language is a social phenomenon. As a social phenomenon, it is distinguished from natural phenomena. For example, natural-biological and physiological characteristics of people (eating, breathing, development, etc.) develop in accordance with the laws of nature, independently of society. But in order to speak and think in a language, there must be a community of people. Therefore, unlike natural phenomena, language is a social phenomenon created and served by human society.
