Abstract

Staff wellbeing is a critical problem in every organisation and should not be taken lightly. This is because employees play a critical part in the production process of any firm, and as such, if their welfare is neglected (if their working conditions are substandard), it might impact their attitude at work. As such, the research investigated the state of service and employee attitudes at Rivers State University. The study's focus is confined to Rivers State University's non-teaching employees. Three study objectives and three associated research questions served as the framework for the article. The Maslow and Herzberg theories of motivation were used to support the study. A descriptive survey design was used in this investigation. This research involved all non-teaching personnel at Rivers State University. The institution employs nine hundred and seventy-three (973) teaching and non-teaching staff. The Taro Yamane Formula was used to generate a sample of 324 individuals from staff of Rivers State University. The data collecting tool was a questionnaire devised by the researcher named 'Condition of Service and Employees' Attitude Questionnaire' (CSEAQ). The CSEAQ was developed using a four-point rating scale. The mean and standard deviation were used to analyse the data at 2.50 which serves as the basis for decision-making. The data indicated that leave bonuses, training allowances, a positive work environment, and promotions all have a significant impact on employee attitudes at Rivers State University. The investigation concluded, among other things, that personnel at Rivers State University should be promoted in accordance with established procedures. This enables them to maintain a favourable attitude toward their career.

Abstract

Human Resource (HR) today has an incredible opportunity to increase its impact on organizational performance and become a true strategic partner by contributing to the organizational and work design challenges that enable organizational growth. This paper examined the theoretical perspectives of Strategic Human Resource Management Practices (SHRMP). A narrative approach has adopted an attempt to draw a relationship between SHRMP and organizational growth. Other related works written by different authors were reviewed. The findings could be generally stated to HR practices have a very strong relationship with organizational growth. The implication is that organizations must use their human resources effectively to limit the waste that occurs when valuable human resources are used poorly, say, without adequate on-the-job training or promotion. Given the increased emphasis on HR practices, HR managers must understand the critical nature and utmost importance of the effectiveness of HR practices such as training, planning, reward, recruitment, selection and promotion in creating value for the organization.

Abstract

This study investigated the effect of Cooperative and Conventional learning strategies on academic achievement of senior secondary school students in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, Nigeria relative to Urban-Rural school location. The study adopted the pretest-posttest, quasi-experimental design and was guided by three research questions and their hypotheses. A sample size of 379 was drawn from a population of 27,160 senior secondary school students (SS 11) in four public co-educational schools. A Biology Achievement Test (BAT), was used as an instrument for data collection. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used for data analysis. The results of this study indicated a significant difference between urban and rural students’ achievement in Biology when taught using cooperative learning strategy, and in favor of urban students; a significant difference between urban/rural students mean achievement in Biology when taught using conventional learning strategy, in favor of urban students; no significant difference in achievement between students taught using cooperative learning and those taught using conventional learning strategy relative to school location. It was therefore recommended amongst others, that Biology Teachers in FCT, Abuja be trained on the operating procedures of cooperative learning in addition to conventional learning strategy they are used to; and that Biology students be exposed to jigsaw II cooperative learning strategy to engender social interaction that fosters the attainment of higher academic achievement and greater retention of learned materials, as well as those of conventional learning strategies that enables repetition and drills, leading to mastery.

Abstract

This study ‘strategies used in assessing mathematics of teacher trainees and effect on the mathematics taught in primary schools in the South West Region of Cameroon’ was carried out quantitatively with the use of the survey design. All 31 mathematics teacher trainers of teacher training colleges in the South West Region of Cameroon constituted the accessible population. Data was collected with the use of a questionnaire made up of 10 close ended items. Spearman rank correlation was used to analyse the date and the results show that the strategies used in assessing mathematics of teacher trainees have no significant effect on the mathematics taught in primary schools in South West Region. Based on the findings, it is recommended that the coefficient of mathematics in PSTTC could be increased to be among the highest as is the case in primary and secondary schools, mathematics could be assessed in the end of course examination as an independent subject with same high coefficient as general pedagogy, mathematics could be among the subjects to be compulsorily assessed during teaching practice at the end of course examination, and the assessment of student teachers when they teach mathematics during teaching practice could be done solely by mathematics teacher trainers.
