Abstract

This study examines the Impact of Demonstration and Fieldtrip Instructional Strategies on Senior Secondary School Biology Student’s Achievement and Retention in Edati Local Government Area of Niger State. A pre-test post-test control quasi experimental design was adopted for the study. A total of 105 (49 males and 56 females) senior secondary school I (SSI) students drawn from two (2) Senior Secondary Schools were used for the study. The students were randomly assigned to Experimental and Control Groups. Six (6) hypotheses were formulated and tested at 0.05 level of significance. The instrument used for data collection was the Biology Achievement Test (BAT) consisting of 20 multiple choice items which was developed by the researcher and validated by the experts in the field. A reliability coefficient of 0.85 was obtained using Cronbach alpha analysis and data collected were analysed. The result indicates that there was a significant difference in the mean achievement scores of students taught using Fieldtrip method and those taught using Demonstration method (t = 6.504, df = 103, p<0.05), there was a significant difference in the mean achievement scores of male and female students taught using Fieldtrip method with (t = 5.129, df = 56, p<0.05), there was a significant difference in the mean achievement scores of male and female students taught using Demonstration method with (t = 4.531, df = 45 p<0.05), there was a significant difference in the mean retention scores of students using Fieldtrip method and those taught using Demonstration method with (t = 3.852, df = 103, p<0.05), there was also a significant difference in the mean retention scores of male and female students taught with the use of Fieldtrip method with (t = 3.522, df = 56, p<0.05) and there was a significant difference in the mean retention scores of male and female students taught using Demonstration method with (t = 2.401, df = 45, p<0.05). Based on these findings, it was concluded that the use of Fieldtrip method is more effective in improving student’s achievement in Biology than the use of Demonstration method. It is therefore recommended that School authority together with the school principal should encourage and give necessary support to teachers to provide and create avenue for students to embark on Fieldtrip activities for effective teaching and learning of Biology in secondary schools.

Abstract

When taking into account Palestinian tourism sites, mastering language English for instance is a prerequisite for serving and offering tourism services in tourist places such as Bethlehem, Jerusalem, Jericho and Hebron after graduation. In Palestine, English for Specific Purposes especially in hospitality and tourism purposes has not been given much investigation in research. Globally, English language is used as a medium of communication in contexts such as hospitality, travel, and tourism. This study examined how English language is used to prepare tourism and hospitability learners who anticipate serving in Palestinian tourism sites. The data indicated that the learners’ perceptions of the courses offered in English are not consistent with their aspirations and perceived academic English language needs, and their response to how they perceive the importance of English language needs was moderate. Based on these findings, the study suggests restructuring these courses and reconsidering the adopted teaching methods to help learners receive proper instruction geared towards intended learning outcomes and meets their future workplace needs. For future studies, it is recommended that quantitative and qualitative researches are needed to be carried out to analyze the actual needs of undergraduate students to the English language in programs hotel management and tourism.

Abstract

The study examined how transition of students from boarding high schools to public Universities influenced academic achievement in terms of Grade point Average (GPA). It explored the life style indicators of these students while in the University of Bamenda specifically, involvement in extracurricular “social” activities and absence from classes by students who leave boarding schools to the University and academic achievement. The survey research design was used in this study. A questionnaire (Likert scale) instrument was used to collect data from year 2 and 3 students in the University of Bamenda. Significant transition indicators of life style that is, focus on extracurricular (social) activities and absenteeism indicators were examined to see how they influenced academic achievement year one in the university. The random simple sampling and purposive sampling methods were used to select 204 students who provided data for the study. Data was processed and analyzed using SPSS version 21. The results showed that students who left boarding high schools to public Universities had a lower achievement rate as compared to their counterparts who left day schools. The t-test of 0.028* which was lower that the alpha level of 0.05 was indicative. This low academic achievement was influenced by two factors that is absenteeism with a mean overall score of absenteeism with a mean overall score of 2.69 and involvement in extracurricular social activities with a mean overall score of 2.65. It was therefore recommended that while in high school students should be informed on the expectations and functioning of Public Universities especially in areas of lifestyle which involve extracurricular activities, patterns of engagement with classroom work and class attendance. The university authorities should in put in place a facility for continuous counselling and follow-up of students upon entry into the university milieu.
