Abstract

The study examines the link between operations improvement function (dimensioned by contingency planning and preventive maintenance) and economic sustainability of petroleum tank farms in South-South, Nigeria. The study was underpinned by the stakeholder theory and the theory of routine dynamics. The study adopted the cross-sectional survey research design, as the researchers could not manipulate the variables, and the underlying philosophy is positivism. The questionnaire was the instrument for data collection. The elements of the accessible population comprise 820 middle and top level managers of all the 29 petroleum tank farms owned by members of the Independent Petroleum Products Importers, in South South, Nigeria. The Krejcie & Morgan’s formula was deployed to determine the sample size of 262 respondents, and a 10% provision was reasonably made to accommodate non-responses and outliers, bringing the adjusted sample size to 288 respondents. The simple random sampling technique was adopted and the Structural Equation Modeling was deployed to test the hypotheses at 0.05 significance level. The results revealed that contingency planning and preventive maintenance have positive and significant relationships with economic sustainability.

Abstract

The paper adopted mean and standard deviation in the evaluation of human resource practice in the post COVID era, having used SPSS as analytical tool in the interpretation of data. The research surveyed three major banks in Obio/Akpor local government area of Rivers State, thus: Sterling bank, Access bank and GTB bank. The paper claims that the on-line trade system which is the dream of the capitalist states is fast clamping down on the African market for one, based on a survey done on three selected banks in Obia/Akpor municipality, it was observed that most of the companies took to the on-line trade system, having laid off some of their workers and some placed on the admin desk to report from their homes. The consequence of this is that the human resource practice is being challenged by the new media which in many ways helps the bank to reduce bank crowding and maintain social distance. In other words, while bank crowding is on the slide through the use of the ATM machine and the cyber space, the activities of the human resource personnel would rarely be needed. The paper recommends that while the traditional human resource practice is on the challenge, the best may be for personnel to sell their service to the online train.

While the methodology adopted was the qualitative method, which content analysis was equally used and sources of data was through secondary method of gathering information for a research. Findings show that there has been a gross incompetence in the Nigerian Civil Service that causes a whole lot of mischief in the implementation processes. Also, the major problem is lack of adherence and compliance to the provisions of administrative law in the implementation process and public service delivery, generally. Inferences were drawn and recommendations were made such as; government leading by example and ensuring adherence and compliance to the provisions of administrative law and that of the constitution; government should ensure that adequate punishment is meted on offenders; zero tolerance on corruption, guaranteed welfare of citizens, among others.

Abstract

This paper assessed the relation between accounting conservatism and firm structure in Nigeria. The expo facto research design was adopted and a sample of thirty-eight (38) publicly listed manufacturing firms was employed. Data of accounting conservatism (earnings accrual) and firm structure (equity-to-asset and asset tangibility ratios) were obtained from 2012-2020. The Fixed (FE) and Random effects (RE) regression statistical technique was used. We find evidence that a firm with more conservative financial disclosure of its earnings accrual adjusts its asset structure towards the companies target more rapidly; this in particular is common for publicly listed manufacturing firms that rely on external financing for adjustment. Moreover, we found that the level of accounting conservatism positively and significantly affects the firm structure and this effect arises due to debt issuance. Overall, the paper suggests that the level of accounting conservatism plays a vital role in enhancing under-levered firms’ adjustment of asset structure of publicly listed manufacturing firms in Nigeria.
