Abstract

Gender inequality is the term used to describe how men and women are treated differently. The target individual or group typically suffers or is disadvantaged as a result of inequality. This study's goal is to describe several types of gender inequality as they appear in Mansour Fakih's theory. Aside from that, consider how female characters approach gender inequity. Using data from the dramas A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry and Heart in the Ground by Doughlas Hill, this study adopts a feminist methodology and Mansour Fakih's concept of gender inequality. Literary criticism is the technique employed. Then, information is gathered by reading and documenting information that is pertinent to the theory and research issues. The results obtained from this study are (1) The two dramas each have three types of gender inequality. In Heart in The Ground there are subordination, violence and double burden. Three different types of women's inequality such as subordination, stereotypes, and marginalization are present in Hansberry's second play, A Raisin in the Sun. (2) Four ways to achieve their rights: rebelling, threatening, and talking about it, focusing on their goal. Keywords: Feminism, Gender Inequality, Drama

Abstract

Globalization has become a primary concern today, leading to significant shifts in social relations and making various global issues more visible. It is characterized by conditions where one can move easily from one place to another. Thus, it blurs the meaning of one's identity and citizenship. Hence, this research uses a structuralist approach and cosmopolitanism. The object of this research is Ocean's Eleven movie script which contains similar issues. The aim is to discover how cosmopolitanism is represented in Ocean's Eleven movie script and to find what kinds of cosmopolitanism are experienced by Ocean's Eleven characters. The researcher used the structuralism approach, Stuart Hall's concept of representation, cosmopolitan identity, and imaginative cosmopolitanism. Then by applying literary criticism, the researcher found that the representation of cosmopolitanism in Ocean's Eleven movie script is shown through character, dialogue, and narration. In addition, the cosmopolitanism shown by the characters of Ocean's Eleven is included in cultural cosmopolitanism. Based on the results, this research can be used as a model for further researchers in finding cosmopolitanism issues in literary works.

Abstract

Social conflict is a common phenomenon in everyday life. Basically, social conflict occurs because of differences in interests between the two groups. As a result, this triggers the emergence of social change in society. Not only in real life but conflict can also be represented in literary works, such as in the novel The Nickel Boys by Colson Whitehead. The novel tells about the social conflicts that occurr in black and white US society, especially at the Nickel Academy. Furthermore, this study aims to determine the form and impact of social conflict on social change in the novel. This research is included in literary criticism, which uses the sociology of literature approach by applying Ralf Dahrendorf's conflict theory. The data in this study were taken from the novel The Nickel Boys by Colson Whitehead, which was published in 2019 by Doubleday, US. Research data were analyzed by identifying, classifying, interpreting, and making conclusions. This research resulted in two findings. First, the social conflict in the novel is represented through several acts of discrimination that occur at Nickel Academy. This social conflict occurred as a result of differences in interests and goals between groups in the social structure there, namely the Nickel Academy staff group, which has the above social structure (superordinate group) and the Nickel Academy student group, which has the lower social structure (subordinate group). Second, the social conflict that occurs in the novel has an impact on social change which is related to the social structure that exists in the Nickel Academy. This change is represented by the removal of the social structure that was there by the US government. Moreover, the researcher suggests future researchers use another approach, such as structuralism, psychology, or others. In addition, they can also use other conflict theories, such as the conflict theory of Karl Marx, Lewis A. Coser, or George Simmel.

Abstract

Women are often deprived of their rights based on sexual orientation, gender identity, or sex characteristics. Betty Friedan thinks patriarchal culture makes women too passive, do not think independently, and do not work for themselves. In addition, women are often trapped in feminine mystique, meaning that they are only fixated on the demands of serving their husbands and doing domestic chores. The novel Dominicana by Angie Cruz talks about Ana (the main female character) trapped in a feminine mystique. That novel is the primary source of data in this study. The aims are to find out how feminine mystique is presented in the novel and explain Ana's efforts to get out of these issues. The researcher uses a feminist literary criticism as an approach and applies Betty Friedan's feminine mystique theory. Thus, the results of this study indicate that Ana did not get her rights as a woman and only did domestic chores without having access to public sphere. Therefore, she made various efforts, such as against her husband, finding a part-time job, joining an English class, and revealing her husband's affair. However, the researcher only focuses on the main female character, to discuss the Feminine Mystique that she experiences and the resistance she does. In future research, the researcher hopes that many will analyze this novel as an object of study in literary criticism. Many literary criticism theories and approaches can be used to analyze this novel, such as psychoanalysis, historicism, structuralism, and sociology of literature. Future researchers can also examine this novel with the same approach by choosing different theoretical references.

Abstract

This research explores the various forms of social action exhibited by the protagonist, Ezio Auditore, in Oliver Bowden's novel Assassin's Creed: Renaissance. Drawing from Max Weber's theory of social action, the research categorizes these actions into four types: instrumental rationality action, value-oriented action, affective action, and traditional action. The data for the study consists of sentences, paragraphs, and dialogues describing Ezio Auditore's social actions in the novel, analyzed using a descriptive method with a sociology of literature approach. The data analysis reveals the frequency of each action type, with affective action being the most prevalent by ten data, followed by value rational action with eight data, rational instrumental action with five data, and traditional action with two data. Additionally, the study identifies four main goals pursued by the character: seeking revenge, uncovering conspiracies, eradicating the Templar order, and protecting Florence. The predominant use of rational instrumental action and the lower occurrence of value rational action in pursuing these goals are highlighted. These findings offer insights into Ezio Auditore's motivations and behaviors, shedding light on the social dynamics depicted in the novel.

Abstract

This research focuses on analyzing the types of grammar and ideological representations in the news texts of The Guardian and CNN online news using the Critical Linguistics analysis model of Roger Fowler et.al (1979). Then the Discourse Historical Approach from Ruth Wodak (2001) is used to know the historical background of this topic. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method to find out what types of grammar are contained in the news text and how the grammar represents the ideology of the news. The explosion occurred as a result of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. This topic has attracted public attention, therefore, online news media such as The Guardian and CNN are discussing it. At this time online news media plays an important role in disseminating information, but in fact the language used in online news media can contain certain ideologies that benefit one group and harm other groups. Based on the results of Critical Linguistics analysis from Roger Fowler et.al (1979), it is found that the ideology of the two online media is anti-Russian and pro-Ukrainian. The findings of this study show that there are 28 types of grammar in The Guardian and 17 grammatical strategies in CNN. The type of grammar that often appears from both media is transitivity grammar. In representing their ideology, both online media often use negative lexical choices to give negative references to the Russian side. Future researchers can develop their analysis by using different theoretical studies and objects.

Abstract

The moral values are an issue that will continue to be discussed. The moral value emphasized in this research focused on the value of responsibility. The researcher chooses this moral value because The Christmas Pig is a fantasy novel that emphasizes how humans, especially children, should keep and take responsibility for their actions. This study aims to identify the moral value of responsibility along with the development of the characters’ sense of responsibility in the novel entitled The Christmas Pig written by J.K. Rowling. This research is a literary criticism study with structuralism approach by paying attention to intrinsic elements of the story. The study uses the concept of responsibility from Linda and Eyre, which distinguishes responsibility into four parts: responsibility to parents, responsibility to society, responsibility to self, and responsibility to others. The results of this study indicate that there are three kinds of moral values of responsibility portrayed, namely responsibility to parents, responsibility to society, and responsibility to self. Each of these moral values of responsibility is found in the main characters’ and minor characters, namely Jack and Holly. Furthermore, the development of the characters’ sense of responsibility is focused on Jack and Holly. Jack’s development of the characters’ sense of responsibility is portrayed through his action toward CP. Jack, who is initially being rude to CP, becomes a responsible child and takes care of CP. Meanwhile, Holly is portrayed through her irresponsible attitude such as selfishness, disobedience, and impulsiveness, turning into a child who is responsible for society, her parents, and herself. Overall, this thesis provides a deeper understanding of the moral value conveyed in The Christmas Pig and the importance of responsibility as a fundamental aspect of human life.

Abstract

In this modern world, the phenomenon of women oppression has become more prevalent in society. Oppression against women has been embedded for generations and can really happen under any circumstances. However, this phenomenon is not only actualized in real life but is also portrayed in Taylor Jenkins Reid’s work entitled The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo. The aims of this study are divided into two categories: first, to identify forms of oppression experienced by women characters, Monique Grant and Evelyn Hugo, and second, to describe women characters' struggle against oppression in the novel. The approach used in this study is the sociology of literature since the novel brings up social life issues such as inequalities based on class, race, gender, and other aspects, which these issues might be examined through the perspective of liberal feminism. Additionally, the researcher uses the ‘Five Faces of Oppression’ theory by Irish Marion Young to identify forms of oppression. The results of this study revealed that Monique and Evelyn experienced oppression due to their gender and racial background. Monique was marginalized in the workplace, whereas Evelyn was subjected to the five faces of oppression mentioned by Young, both in the private and public spheres. However, despite the oppression that Monique and Evelyn experienced, they were struggling for their freedom and rights in order to take control of their own lives and careers. Their struggles are intertwined with liberal feminism, a theory that advocates for changing laws, policies, and institutions in order to eliminate gender equality in all aspects of life.
