Abstract

In the dynamic realm of the digital landscape, the internet has significantly shaped the lexicon of online gaming, giving rise to distinctive linguistic expressions within the gaming community. This study explores the morphological processes behind the online game terminology employed by casters during the IESF 2022 Mobile Legends: Bang-Bang tournament. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, the research centers on the vocabulary used in the tournament's final match between the Philippines and Indonesia, as showcased on the Garudaku ESI YouTube channel. Analyzing 39 game terms through Yule's (2010) word formation theory, the study unveils various morphological processes, encompassing 7 instances of compounding, 1 of clipping, 7 of acronyms, and 24 of derivation. These findings underscore the dynamic and innovative facets of language evolution in the digital era, emphasizing the ongoing transformation within the E-sports domain. This research underscores the significance of continual linguistic exploration in the realm of online gaming, advocating for diverse theoretical approaches to better understand the fluid and ever-changing nature of language in digital contexts. The insights garnered in this study lay a foundation for future linguistic analyses in Mobile Legends tournaments and analogous online environments, contributing to the broader understanding of the linguistic intricacies that characterize these digital spaces.

The aim of this research is to find out the types of presupposition in haters' comments on Joe Biden’s posts on his Instagram account and the implicit meaning of the presupposition. This research uses the theory of Huang (2014) for the presupposition analysis and the theory of Larson (1984) for the implicit meaning. The data obtained from the utterances of haters in the comment column of Joe Biden’s Instagram account, then it was classified by types and then interpreted in the implicit meaning of the utterances. The source of the data was taken from two posts about the G20 posted by Joe Biden on 17, November 2022 in his Instagram account. In the results of this study, the researcher found seven (7) types of presupposition based on data source 1 and data source 2. They are definite description, aspectual, iterative, implicative predicates, quantifier, temporal clause, and counterfactual conditional. The type most commonly found in this study is definite description. The researcher also found the kinds of implicit meaning to interpret the presupposition. They are implicit referential meaning, organizational meaning, and situational meaning. Implicit organizational meaning is the kind of implicit meaning that is often used by haters in the comments column on Joe Biden’s Instagram account. For future researchers, this research can be used as a reference for carrying out research, especially those related to presupposition according to Yan Huang.

Abstract

In the contemporary era, literary studies play a crucial role in understanding power dynamics within social contexts. This research analyzes the impact of power discourse on social practices portrayed in George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four. Employing the discourse theory of power, the study reveals an intricate power system, showcasing its enduring nature, which makes overthrowing it challenging. Adopting a literary sociology approach, the researcher considers the socio-historical aspects of the novel's world. Data collection involves narratives and dialogues aligned with research objectives, drawing on Michel Foucault's theoretical concepts such as episteme, power/knowledge relations, disciplining (normalization), and panopticon. The research explores how power discourse significantly shapes social reality in Orwell's society, employing a critical analysis of the novel's narrative. Foucault's concept of epistemology examines the construction and maintenance of knowledge in the totalitarian government policies depicted. The interplay between power and knowledge raises inquiries into the control and utilization of information to uphold power structures. The discipline concept, focusing on normalization, analyzes the enforcement of obedience and conformity in a government-ruled society. Additionally, Foucault's panopticon notion scrutinizes how surveillance and control involve invisible elements influencing individual behavior. Through these analytical frameworks, the research unveils the intricate dynamics between power discourses and social practices in Nineteen Eighty-Four, offering profound insights into the exercise and maintenance of power in an authoritarian society.

Abstract

The term of genres refers to the particular texts that have the similarity of meaning and gives particular identity/meaning to the texts. While the term of genres is used to classify the particular texts that have the same meaning, the narrative structure theory argues that there is a meaning behind the structure of the texts. Dystopia is a kind of genres in fiction which refers to particular texts that have the meaning about a fictious world that is filled with oppressive society. One example of literary works that represents the dystopian sub-genre characteristics is the Children of Men novel by P.D. James. This research aims to analyze the way in which the narrative structure is formed in James’s the Children of Men novel, by the use of narrative structure theory by Tzvetan Todorov, and the way in which the narrative structure represents the dystopian sub-genre characteristics by the use of Terri Chung’s dystopian characteristics theory. The results of this research show that the novel contains all of five narrative stages, and the process of changing narrative stages are absolutely influenced by the changes that happens in Theo’s life. In addition, this research also finds that the narrative structure and the dystopian characteristics of the novel are interconnected, since each dystopian characteristic has its own role to deliver the meaning behind each narrative stage in the novel. Based on the scope and limitation of this research, the researcher only focused on the intrinsic aspects of the novel. So, there will be many research that can be conducted by using this novel as material object, since there are still many theories and approaches that can be used to do the literary criticism for this novel.
