Abstract

Hypertension is a major risk factor for stroke and is closely associated with increased psychological distress among older adults. Community based interventions have emerged as a promising strategy to address both conditions simultaneously. However, current evidence regarding their effectiveness from randomized clinical trials remains to be systematically synthesized. To evaluate the effectiveness of community-based interventions on stroke risk and psychological distress (anxiety and depression) among older adults with hypertension. This systematic review was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. Literature searches were performed in PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, Cochrane Library, and CINAHL databases. Inclusion criteria comprised randomized controlled trials (RCTs) or quasi experimental studies involving older adults (≥60 years) with hypertension, community-based interventions, and outcomes related to stroke risk and/or psychological distress, published between 2019 and 2024. Exclusion criteria included systematic reviews, meta-analyses, scoping reviews, literature reviews, and observational studies. Study quality was assessed using the Critical Appraisal Skills Program (CASP) checklist for cohort studies and RCTs. Of the 3,247 records identified, 9 studies met the inclusion criteria, involving a total of 35,206 participants. The evaluated interventions included community based physical activity programs, coordinated community clinic care models, multicomponent behavioral interventions, stroke health education, intensive blood pressure controlled by non-physician health workers, and community based cognitive behavioral therapy. All included studies reported significant reductions in systolic blood pressure (mean reduction ranging from 8–15 mmHg). Six studies demonstrated significant reductions in stroke risk (OR 0.64–0.82). Five studies assessing psychological distress reported significant decreases in anxiety and depression scores following the interventions. Community based interventions are effective in reducing stroke risk and psychological distress among older adults with hypertension. Multicomponent approaches integrating blood pressure management, health education, and psychological support produced the most favorable outcomes. These findings support the implementation of integrated community-based programs within primary healthcare systems.

Abstract

Hypertension is a non-communicable disease that often occurs in menopausal women due to hormonal changes and decreased blood vessel elasticity. One non-pharmacological therapy that can be used to help lower blood pressure is consuming Ambon bananas because they contain high levels of potassium and magnesium. This study aims to determine the effect of Ambon bananas on blood pressure and pulse in menopausal women with hypertension in Karang Anyar Village, RT. 49, Tarakan City, North Kalimantan. The study used a quasi-experimental design with a one-group pretest-posttest approach. The study population was 79 menopausal women with hypertension with a sample of 44 respondents selected using simple random sampling. Data were collected using blood pressure and pulse observation sheets, then analyzed using the Wilcoxon test. The results showed that before the intervention, most respondents had moderate blood pressure (84.1%), while after the intervention, most were in the normal category (70.5%). Pulse rates before the intervention were mostly normal (63.6%) and after the intervention increased to 91%. Statistical test results showed a significant difference in blood pressure of p=0.000 and pulse rate of p=0.046, indicating that Ambon bananas have an effect on blood pressure and pulse rate in menopausal women with hypertension. The potassium and magnesium content in Ambon bananas plays a role in helping vasodilate blood vessels and maintain stable heart function. Consuming Ambon bananas can be used as an alternative non-pharmacological therapy to help control hypertension in menopausal women.

Abstract

Typhoid fever remains a public health issue in Indonesia, particularly in densely populated environments such as Islamic boarding schools (Pondok Pesantren). One factor suspected of contributing to the increased risk of this disease is the habit of consuming snacks without regard for hygiene and food safety. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between snack consumption habits and the incidence of typhoid fever among female students at the Tarbiyatul Qur’an Al-Falah Islamic Boarding School in Kediri Regency. An observational analytic study design with a cross-sectional approach was employed. The study population consisted of 800 female students, with a sample of 89 respondents determined based on a 10% margin of error. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire and analyzed via univariate and bivariate methods (Chi-square test) at a 5% significance level. The results showed that 56 respondents (62.9%) exhibited good snack consumption habits, while 33 respondents (37.1%) exhibited poor habits. A total of 31 respondents (34.8%) had a history of typhoid fever. Bivariate analysis revealed a significant relationship between snack consumption habits and the incidence of typhoid fever (p=0.001). Poor snack consumption habits increased the risk of typhoid fever among the female students. These findings underscore the importance of enhancing education on selecting safe and hygienic snacks as part of typhoid fever prevention efforts within the Islamic boarding school environment.

Abstract

Adolescents are an age group vulnerable to nutritional status issues resulting from an imbalance between energy intake and energy expenditure. Physical activity is one of the factors influencing nutritional status. Low levels of physical activity combined with sedentary behavior can disrupt energy balance, thereby increasing the risk of nutritional problems among adolescents. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between physical activity and nutritional status among adolescents at MTs Nurul Islam, Kediri City. A quantitative method with an observational analytic design and a cross-sectional approach was employed. The study sample consisted of 101 adolescents selected using a stratified proportional random sampling technique. Physical activity was measured using the Physical Activity Questionnaire for Adolescents (PAQ-A), while nutritional status was determined based on Body Mass Index (BMI). Data analysis was performed using the Spearman Rank correlation test. The majority of respondents (n=50; 49.5%) fell into the moderate physical activity category, while the largest group regarding nutritional status (n=55; 54.5%) fell into the underweight category. The analysis results indicated a significant relationship between physical activity and nutritional status among adolescents at MTs Nurul Islam, Kediri City (p=0.007; r=0.268). Physical activity is significantly associated with adolescent nutritional status. These findings demonstrate that physical activity is a factor linked to nutritional status; therefore, it needs to be enhanced through promotive and preventive efforts within the school environment to support optimal nutritional status.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a non-communicable disease whose prevalence continues to increase, including among adolescents. Lifestyle changes, such as consumption of foods high in sugar and fat, lack of physical activity, and the increasing incidence of overweight, can increase the risk of diabetes from an early age. Family support is an important factor in developing healthy lifestyle behaviors as an effort to prevent diabetes in adolescents. This study aims to analyze the relationship between family support and diabetes mellitus prevention behaviors in adolescents at SMPN 1 Banyakan, Kediri Regency. The study used a quantitative design with a cross-sectional approach. A total of 147 seventh-grade students were selected as respondents using a proportional random sampling technique. Data were collected through questionnaires and analyzed using the Spearman Rank test. The results showed a significant relationship between family support and diabetes mellitus prevention behaviors in adolescents with a p-value = 0.001 and a correlation coefficient (r) = 0.281. These findings indicate that the better the support provided by the family, the better the diabetes prevention behaviors carried out by adolescents. Therefore, strengthening the role of the family through education and habituation of healthy lifestyle behaviors needs to be optimized as a strategy for preventing diabetes mellitus from adolescence.

Abstract

The low ability of waste sorting among elementary school students is a serious problem that impacts environmental health. Knowledge and attitude are determinants that influence a person's ability to carry out waste sorting behavior. This study aims to analyze the relationship between knowledge and attitude with waste sorting ability in grades 3, 4, and 5 of SDN 2 Sukorame. The method in this study used an analytical observational design with a cross-sectional approach. A sample of 120 students was taken using a simple random sampling technique from a total population of 174 students. Data were collected through a knowledge questionnaire, an attitude questionnaire, and an observation sheet of waste sorting ability. Data analysis used the Chi-Square test with a significance level of α = 0.05. The results showed that most students had insufficient knowledge (54.2%), sufficient attitude (41.7%), and inability (70.8%). The results of the Chi-Square test showed a significant relationship between knowledge and waste sorting ability (p = 0.000) and between attitude and waste sorting ability (p = 0.000). In conclusion, there is a significant relationship between knowledge and attitudes and students' waste sorting skills. Good knowledge and positive attitudes play a crucial role in improving waste sorting skills. Further research using multimodal educational interventions is recommended to simultaneously improve all three domains.

Abstract

Anemia is one of the health issues still commonly experienced by young girls and can affect their health, learning concentration, and productivity. Low knowledge about the factors, effects, and prevention of anemia is one aspect that contributes to the high incidence of anemia. One effort that can be made to develop adolescents' knowledge is through health education using interactive learning media, such as the snakes and ladders game. This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of snakes and ladders-based education on knowledge of anemia prevention among teenage girls at SMPN 1 Banyakan, Kediri Regency. This study uses a quantitative method with a pre-experimental design using a one-group pretest-posttest approach. The study sample consisted of 79 eighth-grade students selected using proportional random sampling techniques. Data collection was carried out using knowledge questionnaires before and after education, then analyzed using the Paired Sample t-test with a 95% confidence level. The results showed that the average knowledge score before the intervention was 9.43 ± 3.003 and increased to 15.33 ± 2.147 after the intervention. The Paired Sample t-test results showed a p-value < 0.001, indicating a difference in average knowledge scores before and after education based on the snakes and ladders game. Thus, education based on the snakes and ladders game is considered effective in increasing knowledge about anemia prevention among adolescent girls. The snakes and ladders game can be used as one of the alternative health promotion media in schools to improve knowledge about anemia prevention.
