Abstract

Chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs) including cardiovascular diseases, cancers, chronic respiratory diseases and diabetes are the major causes of morbidity and mortality in the world contributing close to ¾ of global mortality. As described above, NCDs are increasing progressively around the world and particularly in LMICs, with a likelihood to overwhelm the entire health sector and hinder sustainable development. This work examines evidence from numerous public health interventions aimed at preventing NCDs by controlling modifiable lifestyle factors including unhealthy diets, physical inactivity, tobacco use and excessive alcohol consumption. Both health promotion and legislative conducts have shown high levels of effectiveness: in increasing knowledge and enhancing people’s behaviors; in decreasing the opportunity of exposure to risk factors such as through tobacco taxation and through implementation of sugar-sweetened beverages taxes. Mobile programs have helped in increasing accessibility of healthy food and enhancing physical activities that would suite the decreasing incidences of obesity and related diseases. Also, under the healthcare system, screening programs and integrated care, have indeed improved early detection and control of NCDs. Nevertheless, current challenges that are related to increases in social inequalities, cultural differences, restricted access to healthcare services, etc., still remain especially in LMICs. It notes that more efforts should be channeled towards the targeted approaches in line with the geographical culture that should involve multi-sectoral participation and whose implementation should undergo periodic assessment and accreditation to increase the effectiveness of the NCD control measures. When appropriately applied, all-inclusive and work-setting informed approaches will go a long way in easing the impact of NCDs within the population and fortifying the world’s public health systems.

Abstract

The present research aims at evaluating the effectiveness of a 12-week progressive ST on bone and functional fitness of the older adults with limited evidence in the existing literature. In this experimental study, 100 sedentary elderly people who met the inclusion criteria were selected through purposive sampling and divided into two groups based on convenience sampling; experimental group n = 50 received supervised resistance training and the control group n = 50 continued with their normal daily activities with no exercise. BMD was measured by DXA at the lumbar spine, femoral neck, and the total hip. Osteocalcin and C-terminal telopeptide (CTX) were used also to determine bone formation and resorption rates. Basic and higher-level functional fitness was measured using the Timed Up and Go (TUG) test and the 30 second chair stand test. Significant results were noted in comparing the body composition, BMD, biomarkers of bone turnover, and functional fitness in the experimental group versus control group where p < 0.05 using pair sample t-test and two-way ANOVA. Taken together with prior research, these results offer strong confirmation of the value of strength training in building bone strength as well as increasing physical capabilities. In contrast to the previously mentioned studies this research encompasses a sample of older adults of different backgrounds, meaning the findings can enriched from a general perspective. This study highlights the need for broad integration of strength training in healthy aging framework for omorbidities of spine and fracture prevention along with functional dependency in elderly.

Abstract

Genomic medicine which leverages the insights gained from the human genome, holds transformative potential in public health by enabling personalized treatment strategies, improving disease prevention, and enhancing healthcare outcomes. This literature review examines both the benefits and risks associated with the application of genomic medicine in public health. The benefits include more accurate disease diagnoses through genetic profiling, targeted therapies for conditions like cancer and cardiovascular diseases, and improved preventive care by identifying genetic predispositions to various health conditions. These advances offer the potential for better health outcomes and cost-effective care through early interventions. However, the integration of genomic medicine into public health systems presents several risks, including ethical concerns related to privacy, genetic discrimination, and the protection of sensitive genetic data. The economic challenges associated with the implementation of genomic medicine, such as high costs and potential inequities in access, are also discussed. Additionally, the scientific uncertainty surrounding the interpretation of certain genetic variations poses challenges in clinical applications. This review highlights the need for strong policies and ethical frameworks to ensure the responsible use of genomic data while promoting equitable access to genomic technologies across diverse populations. In conclusion, while genomic medicine holds significant promise, its integration into public health systems requires careful consideration of these risks to maximize its benefits and ensure fairness in access.

Abstract

This study explores the role of nutrition in immune function and resilience against infectious diseases in adults aged 18 to 65 years. Using a quantitative, cross-sectional design, the research examines the relationship between dietary intake and immune markers, as well as the incidence of infectious diseases over a six-month period. A total of 300 participants from a specific urban area were assessed for nutrient intake using a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) and a 24-hour dietary recall, while immune function was measured through blood biomarkers, including white blood cell count, interleukin-6, and immunoglobulin G levels. The results indicated significant positive correlations between nutrient intake (especially vitamins C and D, and omega-3 fatty acids) and immune function markers, with higher nutrient intake linked to improved immune responses. The study also revealed that participants following the Mediterranean diet had the highest immune function and lowest frequency of infections, while those on low-quality diets experienced poorer immune health and more frequent infections. These findings underscore the critical role of nutrition in modulating immune function and enhancing resilience against infections. This study contributes to the growing body of evidence supporting the beneficial effects of a balanced, nutrient-rich diet on immune health and highlights the importance of dietary interventions for improving public health outcomes.

Abstract

This study investigates the impact of a 12-week structured exercise program on cognitive function and brain health in older adults. A total of 100 participants aged 60 and above, with no severe cognitive impairment, were randomly assigned to an experimental group (n = 50) and a control group (n = 50). The experimental group participated in a program combining aerobic exercise, resistance training, and balance exercises, while the control group maintained their usual daily activities. Cognitive function was assessed using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) and Trail Making Test (TMT), and brain health was measured through blood-derived brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels and transcranial Doppler ultrasonography to evaluate cerebral blood flow. Pre-test and post-test data were analyzed using paired t-tests, independent samples t-tests, and ANCOVA to account for baseline differences. Results indicated significant improvements in cognitive performance, BDNF levels, and cerebral blood flow in the experimental group compared to the control group (p < 0.05). This study demonstrates that regular, structured exercise can effectively enhance cognitive function and brain health in older adults, addressing a significant gap in the literature regarding the role of multifaceted exercise programs in cognitive aging. These findings suggest that exercise may be a promising intervention to prevent cognitive decline and improve brain health in aging populations.

Abstract

This study explores the role of cognitive strategies in enhancing health outcomes within the Vietnamese healthcare system, addressing a gap in the literature regarding their application in Southeast Asia. A total of 300 participants, including healthcare professionals and patients, were surveyed to assess the use and effectiveness of cognitive strategies such as attention focusing, memory aids, problem-solving approaches, and behavioral reinforcement. The results revealed that attention focusing was the most frequently used strategy (63.3%), followed by memory aids (56.7%), and problem-solving (43.3%). The study found significant positive correlations between cognitive strategies and key health outcomes, including treatment compliance (r = 0.45), lifestyle choices (healthy diet, r = 0.50), and preventive health behaviors (exercise, r = 0.38). Urban participants were more likely to use cognitive strategies compared to their rural counterparts, highlighting the urban-rural divide in healthcare access and strategy implementation. Multiple regression analysis indicated that attention focusing and memory aids significantly predicted treatment compliance, while problem-solving and behavioral reinforcement influenced healthy diet choices and exercise habits. These findings underscore the potential of cognitive strategies to improve health outcomes in Vietnam, emphasizing the need for context-specific interventions that account for cultural and regional differences. The study contributes to the global understanding of cognitive strategies in healthcare, particularly in non-Western contexts, and offers insights for healthcare practitioners and policymakers seeking to implement evidence-based, patient-centered approaches in Vietnam and similar settings.

Abstract

Health resilience is a critical determinant of communities' ability to adapt to and overcome health challenges, particularly in contexts with significant socio-economic and healthcare disparities, such as Nigeria. This qualitative study explored the potential of mindful practices and cultural integration to enhance health resilience within Nigerian communities. Using purposive sampling, 30 participants, including healthcare professionals, cultural leaders, and community health workers, were selected from diverse regions of Nigeria. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions and analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings highlight the positive impact of mindfulness on emotional well-being and stress management, revealing its potential to improve health outcomes when adapted to align with local traditions. Culturally embedded health practices were found to play a pivotal role in shaping health behaviors, fostering community acceptance, and strengthening resilience. However, barriers such as limited awareness, resistance to change, and insufficient policy support hinder the widespread adoption of these integrated approaches. This study addresses gaps in existing literature by offering actionable insights for designing context-specific health interventions that leverage both modern psychological tools and traditional cultural practices. The integration of mindful practices and cultural dimensions presents an innovative pathway to address Nigeria's healthcare challenges, aligning with global health goals and fostering sustainable, culturally sensitive healthcare models. Future research should focus on evaluating the long-term impacts of such interventions and their scalability across diverse communities

Abstract

This study investigates the impact of focused health awareness on the effectiveness of preventive health measures in Nigeria. With the country grappling with a dual burden of infectious diseases and rising non-communicable diseases (NCDs), preventive healthcare strategies have become increasingly vital. Despite various interventions, including vaccination campaigns and health awareness programs, the role of awareness as a key factor in the success of these measures remains underexplored. The research employs a quantitative approach, using surveys to assess the awareness levels of Nigerian citizens regarding preventive health measures, and correlating these levels with the effectiveness of health interventions. A total of 400 respondents from urban and rural areas were surveyed to gauge their understanding of common health issues and their participation in preventive health programs. The results reveal that targeted health awareness programs significantly influence individuals' participation in preventive healthcare, with higher levels of awareness leading to better health outcomes. In particular, awareness regarding NCDs such as hypertension and diabetes was shown to have a stronger effect on health behaviors than awareness of infectious diseases like malaria. The study contributes to filling the gap in literature by providing empirical evidence on the importance of focused health awareness in improving the effectiveness of health interventions in Nigeria. The findings offer valuable implications for policymakers, healthcare practitioners, and development organizations, highlighting the need for tailored and context-sensitive health campaigns to optimize preventive healthcare strategies.
