Abstract

This qualitative study explores the impact of active play and exploration on early childhood learning outcomes, focusing on three early childhood education centers in Makassar City. Employing a case study design, the research utilized participant observations, semi-structured interviews, focus group discussions, and document analysis to gather comprehensive insights. The findings reveal that active play significantly fosters cognitive development by enhancing problem-solving, critical thinking, and creativity. Social and emotional development were also evident as children engaged in collaborative activities, fostering teamwork, empathy, and self-regulation. Educators played a critical role in facilitating meaningful play experiences through structured guidance and adaptive strategies, while parents highlighted the importance of play in extending learning beyond the classroom. This study addressed gaps in the literature by providing context-specific evidence of the effectiveness of play-based learning in a cultural setting where traditional rote-learning approaches dominate. The findings emphasize the need for a balanced approach that incorporates both child-led and teacher-facilitated play, ensuring alignment with developmental goals. Furthermore, the study underscores the importance of collaboration between educators and families to optimize the benefits of play-based learning. The implications of this study suggest that policymakers and educators should prioritize active play as an integral component of early childhood curricula. By doing so, they can promote holistic child development and create enriched learning environments that nurture lifelong skills.

Abstract

The research analyzes the educational experiences of rural junior high school Indonesian language teachers by examining their teaching competence improvement barriers. A qualitative method enabled researchers to obtain data from classroom observations together with in-depth interviews and focus group discussions involving twelve teachers who teach at different rural educational facilities. Research demonstrates that rural teachers experience important barriers because they face restricted access to basic resources together with restricted access to professional development and technological support. Despite these obstacles, teachers employ various strategies for self-improvement, such as peer collaboration, online learning, and community support. Rural teachers receive essential help from neighborhood residents who provide facilities along with encouragement to bridge their educational deficiencies. This research demonstrates both the significance of nonformal professional support systems used by teachers as well as their ability to cope with their individual teaching situations effectively. Rural schools need both enhanced organizational backing and stronger community involvement to build teacher qualification levels which produces better academic outcomes in their areas. The study contributes to research overlooking rural education while providing concrete suggestions for authorities and education leaders to enhance teacher development in underserved rural regions.

Abstract

This study explores the influence of mobile phone use on students' interest in learning, distinguishing between educational and recreational uses of mobile devices. A total of 300 students participated, with data collected through surveys assessing their mobile phone usage patterns and interest in various academic subjects. Descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation, multiple regression, and ANOVA analyses were employed to examine the relationship between mobile phone use and students' academic engagement. The results revealed a positive correlation between educational mobile phone use and increased interest in learning, particularly in subjects such as mathematics and science. In contrast, recreational use of mobile phones was negatively associated with students' interest in academic subjects, highlighting the potential distractions posed by non-educational mobile activities. Age was found to positively influence interest in learning, while gender did not significantly affect the outcomes. The study contributes to the literature by addressing gaps in understanding the differentiated impacts of mobile phone use, providing practical insights for educators and policymakers on how to effectively integrate mobile technology into educational settings while mitigating potential distractions. The findings suggest that mobile phones, when used for educational purposes, can enhance students' academic motivation, but their recreational use should be managed to prevent disengagement from learning.

Abstract

This study examines the effects of teacher feedback on student self-efficacy in mathematics, focusing on the impact of feedback types (corrective, praise, and constructive) and feedback frequency. Using a quantitative approach, data were collected from 300 middle school students across three grade levels (6th, 7th, and 8th). Results showed that constructive feedback had the strongest positive correlation with improvements in self-efficacy (r = 0.70), followed by corrective (r = 0.62) and praise feedback (r = 0.48). Additionally, students who received feedback more frequently demonstrated greater improvements in self-efficacy, with the high-frequency feedback group showing the highest increase (M = 0.92). Grade-level differences were also observed, with 8th-grade students showing the most significant improvements. This study contributes to the literature by demonstrating the differential effects of feedback types and the importance of feedback frequency in enhancing student self-efficacy, especially in mathematics.

Abstract

Writing is a fundamental language skill that supports students’ ability to communicate ideas, construct knowledge, and achieve academic success. However, many elementary school students continue to experience difficulties in generating ideas, organizing paragraphs, and expressing thoughts effectively in written form. This study aimed to examine the effect of the Think Talk Write (TTW) cooperative learning model on the writing skills of fourth-grade students at SDN 11 Sengkuang Bora, Melawi Regency, West Kalimantan. The study employed a quantitative approach using a pre-experimental one-group pretest–posttest design. The participants consisted of 22 fourth-grade students selected through total sampling. Data were collected through writing tests administered before and after the implementation of the TTW model. Students’ writing performance was assessed based on content, organization, vocabulary, language use, and mechanics. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, the Shapiro–Wilk normality test, and a paired-sample t-test with the assistance of IBM SPSS Statistics Version 27. The results revealed that students’ mean writing score increased from 62.77 in the pretest to 77.95 in the posttest, indicating an improvement of 15.18 points. The normality test confirmed that both datasets were normally distributed, with significance values greater than 0.05. Furthermore, the paired-sample t-test produced a significance value of 0.000, which was lower than the 0.05 significance level. These findings indicate that the Think Talk Write learning model had a significant positive effect on students’ writing skills. The study concludes that TTW is an effective instructional strategy for enhancing elementary students’ writing achievement by promoting active thinking, collaborative discussion, and structured writing practices.

Abstract

The limited integration of local cultural values into early childhood education management has raised concerns regarding the effectiveness of character development programs in increasingly globalized societies. This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of an ethnopedagogical learning management model based on Banten local culture integrated with digital portfolios in strengthening early childhood character. A quantitative approach employing a quasi-experimental design with a non-equivalent control group was utilized. The study involved 130 children aged 4–6 years from several kindergartens in Banten Province, Indonesia, who were assigned to experimental and control groups. The intervention was implemented through a structured learning management model that incorporated local cultural values into planning, implementation, assessment, and stakeholder collaboration processes, while digital portfolios were used to document and monitor children's developmental progress. Data were collected using validated observation instruments measuring three dimensions of character development: discipline, empathy, and independence. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, normality and homogeneity tests, independent sample t-tests, and N-Gain analysis. The findings revealed a statistically significant difference between the experimental and control groups (p < 0.05). The experimental group achieved a high effectiveness category with an average N-Gain score of 0.75, compared to 0.32 in the control group. The results indicate that the integration of ethnopedagogical principles and digital portfolio systems contributes not only to improved character development but also to more culturally responsive and sustainable educational management practices. The study highlights the potential of culture-based learning management as a strategic approach for strengthening children's character while preserving local cultural identity in the digital era.

Abstract

This study examines the persistence and transformation of marriage beliefs within the Mangir community of Bantul Regency, Yogyakarta, Indonesia, in the context of increasing modernization and social change. While modernization is often associated with the decline of traditional practices, local marriage traditions in Mangir continue to influence decision-making and social behavior across generations. This research aims to explore how marriage beliefs are maintained, legitimized, and negotiated within contemporary social contexts. A qualitative case study approach was employed to investigate the experiences, interpretations, and practices of community members. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and document analysis involving traditional leaders, village officials, married community members, and younger-generation residents. The data were analyzed using the interactive model of qualitative analysis consisting of data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing and verification. The findings reveal that marriage beliefs persist through the interaction of collective memory, personal experience, family socialization, and traditional authority. Practices such as petungan (auspicious day calculations), ngalang (ritual detouring), restrictions associated with Wednesday Pon, and post-marital residential norms function as culturally embedded mechanisms for managing uncertainty and preserving social harmony. The study further demonstrates that younger generations do not simply reject traditional beliefs but actively negotiate them through adaptive strategies that accommodate modern educational, occupational, and mobility demands while maintaining cultural legitimacy. These findings suggest that tradition and modernity are not mutually exclusive but coexist through continuous processes of cultural adaptation and reinterpretation. The study contributes to broader discussions on cultural resilience, community-based risk management, local wisdom, and the sustainability of traditional institutions in contemporary society.
