Abstract

In 2020, cancer was one of the six leading causes of death and ranked second as the leading cause of death globally. In Indonesia, breast cancer and cervical cancer are the most common types of cancer among women, with a mortality rate of 70% of all detected cases. The IVA (Visual Inspection with Acetic Acid) and SADANIS (Clinical Breast Examination) methods are effective initial steps for detecting signs and symptoms of cancer in women. This activity aims to increase knowledge and awareness among the public, particularly women, about the importance of early detection of cervical and breast cancer. Through this program, it is hoped that women will better understand the risks and be able to recognize early warning signs. The methods used include reproductive health counseling for women aged 30 to 50 years, followed by cervical and breast cancer screenings. Additionally, the program includes a family planning safari that offers free contraceptive services, such as implants and IUDs, as an additional preventive measure. This activity, held at Puskesmas 1 Wedung, was attended by 14 female participants. The screening results using the IVA and SADANIS methods showed that all participants were negative for cancer indications and had no lumps in their breasts. Based on these results, it can be concluded that routine early detection is crucial for maintaining health and preventing the progression of the disease. Through early detection, appropriate treatment steps can be taken as early as possible, thereby minimizing the risk of complications and death due to cancer. This activity did not include a quantitative evaluation such as pretest-posttest; therefore, changes in knowledge and behavior could not be measured objectively. The results presented are descriptive and reflect immediate program outcomes.

Abstract

Sawangan Sub-Village in Magelang Regency is an area with considerable economic potential based on agriculture and home-based businesses, but its sustainability still faces various structural and technical limitations. This study aims to obtain a comprehensive picture of the entrepreneurial profile, identify the main challenges faced, and formulate the needs for community business development at the sub-village level. The method used is a qualitative approach through in-depth interviews with 23 business actors with diverse socioeconomic backgrounds. Data collection was conducted through direct visits to homes and businesses, allowing for contextual observation of local economic dynamics. The results show that the majority of entrepreneurs are women aged 25 to 72, with a predominance of small-scale culinary businesses, grocery stores, and daily necessities trading. The challenges faced include fluctuations in the number of buyers, limited capital, competition with online sellers, unstable access to raw materials, and a lack of business legality. In addition, most business actors have not fully received relevant assistance or training, although some have participated in consumptive programs and simple technical training. These findings indicate an urgent need to strengthen entrepreneurial capacity through increased access to inclusive capital, licensing facilitation, provision of production facilities, and ongoing assistance in business management. In particular, mastery of digital marketing skills and product diversification are key to coping with changing consumption patterns and increasingly complex market competition. This study concludes that business mapping not only provides a snapshot of local economic conditions but also opens up opportunities for targeted strategic interventions to promote economic independence, strengthen the role of women in entrepreneurship, and enhance the sustainability of entrepreneurship in Sawangan Sub-Village.

Abstract

Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) play an important role in strengthening local economies and supporting community welfare. In Kandangtepus Village, Senduro District, Lumajang Regency, East Java, most community members depend on agroforestry systems that integrate farming, livestock, and agricultural product processing activities. Despite their economic potential, MSME actors in this area often face various challenges, including market uncertainty, workload pressure, and limited institutional support, which may affect their psychological well-being and business sustainability. These conditions formed the basis for selecting the location and implementing psychological support activities. This study aimed to describe the implementation of a light psychological counseling program and identify its potential contribution to strengthening entrepreneurial motivation and resilience among agroforestry-based MSME actors at “Goatzilla.” A descriptive qualitative approach was employed, with data collected through semi-structured interviews, participatory observations, and reflective discussions with MSME owners. The findings indicated that MSME actors experienced several psychological challenges related to work demands and business sustainability concerns. The counseling sessions provided opportunities for self-reflection and facilitated discussions regarding personal strengths, obstacles, and adaptive coping strategies. Participants demonstrated positive responses toward the intervention, particularly in recognizing personal resources and developing more adaptive perspectives regarding business challenges. From the perspective of motivational and resilience theories, light psychological counseling can serve as a supportive approach to enhancing psychological capacity and sustaining entrepreneurial persistence. Therefore, integrating psychological support into community empowerment programs may strengthen MSME resilience and contribute to long-term community development.

Abstract

Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) play a strategic role in supporting the national economy, particularly as drivers of local economic activities and providers of employment opportunities in rural areas. However, village-level MSMEs continue to face various structural and operational challenges, including low levels of business legality, limited access to and utilization of digital technologies, and suboptimal product branding strategies. These constraints have led to reduced competitiveness of MSMEs in an increasingly competitive market environment. The Community Empowerment Learning Program (Kuliah Kerja Nyata–Pembelajaran Pemberdayaan Masyarakat, KKN-PPM) conducted by Universitas Gadjah Mada in Sendangtirto Village, Berbah Sub-district, Sleman Regency, was designed as a comprehensive effort to address these challenges. The program employed a participatory approach through socialization activities, training sessions, and direct assistance for MSME actors. Key activities included support for business legalization processes such as Business Identification Number (NIB) registration and halal certification, implementation of digital payment systems through QRIS, registration of businesses on digital platforms including Google Maps, Shopee Food, and online marketplaces, as well as training on product branding and digital literacy. The digital literacy component covered search engine optimization (SEO) and the utilization of artificial intelligence (AI) for promotional purposes. The results indicate an increased level of awareness among MSME actors regarding the importance of business legality, higher adoption of digital payment systems and online marketing platforms, and improvements in product branding strategies. Overall, the program contributed to enhancing the competitiveness of local MSMEs and strengthening the economic self-reliance of rural communities.

Abstract

Clean and Healthy Living Behavior (Perilaku Hidup Bersih dan Sehat/PHBS) is an essential component in improving student’s health status in the school environment. The implementation of PHBS from an early age plays a crucial role in preventing various diseases related to personal hygiene. However, the application of PHBS among children with special needs often faces challenges due to limitations in cognitive, motoric, and sensory aspects. Preliminary observations at SLB Tegar Harapan indicated that most students had not been able to practice proper handwashing as part of PHBS at School. This paper presents activity to improve the knowledge and skills of students at SLB Tegar Harapan in performing proper handwashing behavior. The method used was a descriptive approach with an educational intervention through simple health education and hands-on practice. The activities were conducted in several stages, including initial observation, delivery of health education using visual media and teaching aids, handwashing demonstrations, repeated practice, and evaluation of students' abilities after the intervention with teacher assistance. The results showed an improvement in students’ ability to perform proper handwashing steps after receiving education and guidance. Behavioral changes were also observed, as indicated by an increased habit of handwashing before and after school activities, although some students still required assistance. In addition, teacher involvement played an important role in strengthening the sustainable implementation of Clean and Healthy living Behavior (PHBS). This study concludes that PHBS education delivered through demonstration and continuous guidance is effective in improving handwashing behavior among students with special needs. Support from the school environment and consistent assistance are essential to gradually develop clean and healthy living habits.

Abstract

The development of tourism villages requires structured and community-based packaging of local potential to create meaningful and sustainable tourism experiences. Jatirejo Village, Kulon Progo Regency, possesses various cultural and agricultural resources that had not yet been integrated into a coherent tourism package. This community service program aimed to formulate and implement a thematic tourism package to optimize the tourism potential of Jatirejo Tourism Village. A participatory approach was employed through community assistance, collaborative planning, and direct implementation involving university students and local residents. The results indicate that the One Day Tour Pesona Jatirejo tourism package was successfully developed and implemented, integrating cultural performances, cycling tours, agricultural harvesting activities, and local handicraft and culinary workshops. The novelty of this program lies in the direct implementation of the tourism package within a district-level tourism village competition, allowing the designed package to be tested and evaluated in real conditions. This program contributed to strengthening community participation, enhancing local capacity in tourism management, reinforcing local identity, and creating opportunities for sustainable economic development. The developed tourism package is expected to serve as an initial model for the continuous and independent development of tourism activities in Jatirejo Tourism Village.

Abstract

Kampung Bugis and Senggarang in Tanjungpinang City are coastal areas that face serious challenges in accessing clean water, primarily due to the high salinity of groundwater, which results in water that is turbid, odorous, and unsuitable for domestic use. This condition highlights the need for the application of simple, affordable, and easily operated technological solutions that do not rely on large-scale clean water supply systems. This community service program aims to implement Appropriate Technology (AT) in the form of a household-scale brackish water filtration system as an effort to improve clean water quality while empowering coastal communities to manage their water resources independently and sustainably. The program was conducted as part of the 2025 UGM Community Service Program (KKN-PPM) using a participatory approach that actively involved community members at all stages of implementation, including water condition surveys, system design and assembly, installation of the filtration unit, training on operation and maintenance, and performance evaluation. The filtration system was designed using fiberglass tanks filled with layered filtration media consisting of silica sand, manganese, activated carbon, and micron filters, which function to reduce turbidity, odor, and excessive mineral content in brackish water. The results of the program demonstrated a significant improvement in water quality, as indicated by changes from previously turbid and odorous water to clear and odorless water, as well as pH values and total dissolved solids approaching national clean water quality standards. The community showed positive responses and high enthusiasm in operating and maintaining the filtration system, as it was considered effective, user-friendly, and suitable for local conditions. In addition to providing technical benefits, the program also enhanced collective awareness of the importance of clean water management and environmental health. Overall, the implementation of household-scale brackish water filtration as Appropriate Technology proved to be effective, adaptable, and highly replicable in other coastal areas with the support of local governments and active community participation.

Abstract

Education supports national development when students and graduates develop and apply their knowledge and capabilities to solve their daily problems. One field of expertise used in daily life is mathematics. According to the established competency standards, elementary school graduates are expected to master multiplication and division. However, based on the preliminary surveys conducted at MI Ma’arif Giriloyo 1 and 2, the school principals reported that many students still struggling with both mathematical operations. To address this issue, undergraduate students conducted a community service program by providing required training for fifth-grade students at MI Ma’arif Giriloyo 1 and 2, utilising an expository approach. A quantitative descriptive analysis with a one-group pretest-posttest design was used to measure the impact of the effort. The questionnaire was validated through discussions with experts, specifically the fifth-grade teachers at MI Giriloyo 1 and 2. The sample consisted of 97 elementary students. Normality tests using the Shapiro-Wilk test followed by the Wilcoxon statistical test revealed an overall increase in the mean posttest scores in mathematics (84.62) compared to the pretest scores (75.97), with an improvement of 8.65% after the tutoring intervention. However, the Wilcoxon test results showed that the Negative Ranks were higher than the Positive Ranks (21.72 > 18.81), and posttest scores declined among nine students. These changes in posttest scores were statistically significant. Considering the data context, where the Positive Rank = 18.81 and the Negative Rank = 21.72, it can be interpreted that the median data tends to decline because the average negative rank is larger, and this difference is statistically significant (p = 0.010). Therefore, it can be concluded that the mathematics tutoring program was still effective in improving the multiplication and division skills of fifth-grade students at MI Giriloyo 1 and 2.

Abstract

TheKKN-PPM UGM team of Wedung plays a role in supporting development in the aquaculture sector, particularly in catfish cultivation. Catfish, with their fast growth, relatively easy aquaculture techniques, and high market demand, havebecome an important fishery commodity. Pond systems are a method of catfish farming that is still widely used by the public because it is considered efficient in terms of land and water use. However, this system also faces ecological challenges, especially related to water quality, which is crucial for fish growth, health, and survival. Through this community service activity, the team conducted a study of aquatic ecology and monitored water quality in catfish cultivation pond managed by the Margo Mulyo Abadi Fish Farming Group (Pokdakan) in Berahan Kulon, Wedung, Demak. This activity was carried out to determine the current conditions and problems that occur as a reference for the implementation of further community service programs in the development of catfish aquaculture in this village. The implementation of the activity included regular weekly water quality monitoring in four selected ponds for a month, in July 2025. The data obtained were analyzed using the Indonesian National Standard (SNI) reference and related literature to assess the suitability of the parameters with the needs of catfish cultivation. The measurement results showed that the pond depth was 100 cm with salinity is 0 ppt, pH 7, and alkalinity of 180 mg/L. These results are still within the optimal range for catfish cultivation. However, there were several parameters that were less suitable, such as water temperature reaching 28–33°C, low clarity (12–16 cm), 0 m/s current speed and quite high nitrite levels reaching 1 mg/L. These conditions can impact stress, growth disorders, and fish mortality. Through these results, the team conveyed to farmers and provided recommendations regarding the importance of sustainable water quality management. Regular monitoring and good water quality management can increase sustainable productivity and maintain the sustainability of the aquatic environment.
