Abstract

The potential for salt in Tedunan Village, Wedung District, and Demak Regency is very large, but it still maximized. Two factors influence the amount of salt, namely climatic conditions and the sources of raw materials. Hot temperatures and scorching sunlight make the climate conditions in Tedunan Village very suitable for salt farming. Abundant sources of raw materials, with the location of the village not far from the sea making it very easy to obtain raw materials for making salt from estuaries. The sluice gate that separates seawater and freshwater also plays a vital role in maintaining the quality of raw materials. With the high potential for salt in Tedunan Village, this community service is conducted to assist salt farmers in Tedunan Village by introducing applying appropriate technology, which is expected to solve salt production problems. The community service results show that the main problem is that the seawater used as a raw material contains a lot of pollutants. The next problem is that salt production must stop during the rainy season, rainwater will change the salt content in seawater which ultimately makes it difficult for salt farmers to produce salt during the rainy season. Collaborating with village officials and the salt group in Tedunan Village, made the community service process more easy. The Village government helps provide relevant data for setting targets, then salt producers groups express problems that are currently happening and will occur based on experience. Research activities, education, and application of appropriate technology which includes FIO and tunnel systems, can have an impact on salt farmers in Tedunan Village.

Abstract

Adolescence is a critical phase of life characterised by rapid physical, emotional, and psychological changes. Posyandu Remaja, a community-based health program tailored for adolescents, has gained attention for its potential to address various health issues during this pivotal period. This article aims to provide an overview of the consistent implementation of Posyandu Remaja in Tempel and Wedung Villages, Demak, Central Java, shedding light on adolescent health in the area. This is an interesting topic because not all regions in Indonesia have implemented Posyandu Remaja. Data collection techniques were carried out through qualitative interviews with midwives from each village regarding Posyandu Remaja and also health checks such as anthropometric, blood pressure and HB (hemoglobin) examinations as part of Posyandu Remaja activities and to provide an overview of adolescent health in the area. The interviews delved into the midwives' perspectives regarding the program's impact, strengths, challenges, and areas for improvement. Observation of health issues and evaluation of Posyandu Remaja in each village also have been carried out during community service activities through health interventions by KKN PPM UGM JT-133 team. The findings highlight the significant role of Posyandu Remaja in raising health awareness among adolescents. Posyandu Remaja serves as a valuable platform for enhancing adolescent health knowledge, fostering positive behavioural changes, and creating a supportive community environment for adolescents. To maximise its impact, activities in Posyandu Remaja are made varied. In addition to health examination or health education, activities that enhance soft skills or artistic skills among adolescents have been conducted. Thus, the adolescents can develop their self-confidence, proficiency, and are physically and mentally healthy. The holistic approach of Posyandu Remaja demonstrates its potential to shape a healthier and more informed younger generation, laying the foundation for improved overall public health in the long term.

Abstract

Tempel Village, located in Demak Regency, Central Java, is an example of a village whose waters experience eutrophication or the enrichment of water bodies from minerals and nutrients, which is characterized by the uncontrolled growth of water hyacinth weeds. This is due to the delivery from the river flow in the area above which is added with excess nutrients from the rice fields. One way to deal with eutrophication is by reducing the use of inorganic fertilizers or replacing them with organic fertilizers. The implementation of this community education program aims to increase public awareness of the existence of water hyacinth weeds which have a negative impact on the ecosystem and their solutions. The method of implementing activities includes field observations followed by outreach and training with related parties. The outreach was carried out to provide information about the causes of water hyacinth due to eutrophication related to agricultural problems. Activities continued with the Clean River program to reduce water hyacinth biomass. The training includes making compost and liquid organic fertilizer as well as biobriquettes from water hyacinth. The results of the final discussion regarding inviting program work showed that public understanding of the water hyacinth problem had increased from the results of the initial discussion before this series of outreach activities was held. It is hoped that this community outreach program can increase the knowledge of the people of Tempel Village in understanding the negative impacts of water hyacinth as a weed and how to handle it to balance the ecosystem and prevent flood disasters.

Abstract

The use of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides in Tempel Village has exceeded the recommended limits. The continuous cultivation pattern of shallots and the minimal land management have also led to difficulties in controlling pests and diseases, as well as a decline in soil quality. Improving soil quality can be achieved through the application of organic materials. One source of organic materials can be obtained from agricultural waste. On the other hand, agricultural waste such as rice husks and straw are available in large quantities. Additionally, eutrophication has led to uncontrolled growth of water hyacinth in water bodies. Until now, the abundant agricultural waste and water hyacinth in Tempel Village have not been utilized effectively. This program aims to utilize agricultural waste for fertilizer and soil amendment, as well as to raise farmers' awareness of the importance of sustainable farming concepts. The methods used include field observations, focused group discussions, socialization, and training. The training program conducted for farmers includes the production of biochar and compost. Through this program, farmers understand the dangers of intensive farming systems with excessive use of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. Farmers also learn how to produce biochar and compost from agricultural waste. Based on the activities carried out, it can be concluded that the abundant agricultural waste and water hyacinth can be utilized as fertilizer and soil amendments, contributing to the implementation of sustainable farming systems.

Abstract

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) have become a global health problem, including in Indonesia itself, where the death rate caused by NCDs is quite high. One of the NCDs that is often found in society is diabetes mellitus and gout. An integrated coaching post (posbindu) was implemented as a NCDs prevention program targeting people aged 15–60 years. Posbindu has been running regularly in three villages where the UGM KKN-PPM unit JT-133 is located, namely Tedunan Village, Wedung Village, and Tempel Village. This research method is to collect data from health test results, is processed descriptively and quantitatively, and short anamnesis results (qualitative data) to explore the risk factor. The characteristics of the Posbindu participants examined were 14% men and 86% women, with ages ranging from 20 to 60 years, with details of the age group 19–44 being 53% and 45–60 years being 47%. Apart from that, the body mass index (BMI) of Posbindu participants was 47% normal, while 49% were obese. When examining the blood sugar of the obese group aged 19-44 years, there was an increase in blood sugar levels and the incidence of diabetes, compared to the non-obese group in the same age group. In the uric acid examination, it was found that the incidence of hyperuricemia in the 19-44 years age group was related to the incidence of obesity and certain eating patterns. From these data it can be concluded that one of the causes of diabetes mellitus and gout in the 19-44 years age group is lifestyle. The unhealthy lifestyle of coastal communities in these three villages includes lack of physical activity, excessive consumption of foods and drinks high in sugar, and others. Therefore, promoting a healthy lifestyle wherever and whenever, especially during posbindu, is the main key in preventing and treating NCDs.

Abstract

edunan is one of the villages that produce woven fabrics in Indonesia. Woven fabric is a textile product that is listed as the original intangible cultural heritage of Indonesia. Woven fabrics are generally known as Indonesia’s local cultural wisdom, woven fabrics also become Indonesia's export products that have high economic value. However, despite its potential, it turns out that the Tedunan’s woven fabric business faced serious problems. One of the bigger issues in developing Tedunan’s woven business is the trend of fast fashion products. The existence of this trend has an impact on the declining interest of the Indonesian people to buy local clothing products such as woven and batik. Furthermore, the existence of garment and textile factories around Tedunan Village gave an impact on reducing interest of youth to become woven craftsmen. This case becomes worse because the potential of Tedunan’s woven fabrics will become extinct due to the lack of regeneration of woven craftsmen. Therefore, the existence of this research program aims to help Tedunan woven cloth craftsmen in developing their business. In addition, this program aims to provide analysis and recommendations in building the Tedunan’s Woven business centre by developing synergy and collaboration as an effort to achieve a sustainable economy. Data collection in this study was carried out by observation and in-depth interviews with the Tedunan’s Woven craftsmans and village governments to find out the root of these problems. There are four main problems in the Tedunan’s woven business, such as lack of capital, production, marketing, and regeneration. Therefore, the programs are designed on answering all existing problems, such as a program for mapping the potential and problems of the Tedunan’s woven business, preparing a roadmap for policy recommendations, program for making documentary videos, and digital marketing workshop. All of these programs are purposed to provide insight to the community about steps to develop the Tedunan’s woven fabric business so that it can impact toward the social and economic well-being in the long term.

Abstract

The eyes play an important role in a student's life. When eye problems occur, there can be a decrease in visual acuity, which can impact the student's quality of life. This can be characterized by blurry eyes when looking at the blackboard or looking far away. Student activities often involve prolonged staring at close objects, such as reading, doing assignments, or using devices such as smartphones and laptops. Without realizing it, these habits become a risk factor for a student to experience refractive error in the form of myopia, or nearsightedness. Students who experience myopia often do not realize it, so as an effort to maintain eye health, it is necessary to conduct eye screening to find out whether students experience refractive disorders or not, including in Wedung Subdistrict which is the location of KKN-PPM UGM unit JT-13. In order to carry out community service, eye screening is carried out for junior high school students. Located in 4 junior high schools in Wedung Sub-district, visual acuity (visus) was measured using the Snellen chart. A total of 300 junior high school students were examined, 55 of whom had decreased visual acuity. After each examination, students were educated on how to maintain eye health. In students with decreased visual acuity, risk factors were explored. This article is designed to describe how the eye health screening was conducted, the condition of some junior high school students with decreased visual acuity, and the risk factors that may cause refractive errors. Data collection was done by listing the results of each school's visus examination and history taking after the examination. The results of the visual acuity examination were analyzed using a descriptive quantitative method, while the interview data were analyzed using a qualitative method. Eye screening in junior high school students is expected to be a health promotion tool for both students with refractive errors and those without, as a reminder to maintain their eye health. For students with refractive errors, the screening can be a prelude to further examination so that students get immediate treatment, which can be in the form of refractive correction with the use of glasses, so that the refractive error that occurs doesn't getting worse.

Abstract

In the context of promoting sustainable development, coastal areas play a pivotal role in supporting local communities, as the region's economic activities heavily rely on its natural resources. One such coastal village is Wedung Village, situated in Wedung District, Demak Regency, Central Java. With its extensive coastal expanse, this area holds immense potential in terms of natural resources. The local community has undertaken various initiatives to harness these resources, including the establishment of shrimp and fish ponds, along with the utilization of diverse mangrove products. The significance of mangrove ecosystems in upholding the coastal equilibrium cannot be understated. However, these mangroves are currently confronted by an escalating threat of degradation due to land clearance for aquaculture ponds. This article centers on a community service program, specifically the development of the mangrove ecosystem's potential as part of the 2023 UGM Community Service Program-PPM (KKN-PPM) in Wedung Village, Demak. A range of programs aimed at tapping into the mangrove ecosystem's potential have been devised, encompassing education on the advantages and ecological importance of mangroves, mangrove ecosystem learning for students, mangrove distribution mapping, guidance on silvofishery practices, and the planting of mangrove saplings. The methodology employed involves a blend of literature review, on-site observations, and community engagement. Data collection done by direct observation and interviews with mangrove advocates and community leaders. The collected information is qualitatively and descriptively analyzed to perceive the potential of the mangrove ecosystem. From the data, Wedung Village had shown remarkable potential on mangrove ecosystems. The implementation of silvofishery practices emerges as a means to preserve the ecological role of mangroves and enhance aquaculture productivity. In addition, mangrove seedlings were planted as a form of conservation efforts. These initiatives have effectively heightened community awareness regarding the significance of mangroves and their sustainable stewardship.
