Abstract

This study was conducted to investigate the planning and implementation of life-skill education at SMP Negeri 2 Selong, East Lombok. In this descriptive study, the researcher’s role was both as a subject and as the main instrument. The data were obtained from in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation. The results revealed that the planning of life-skill education was strategically and operationally running well through the school vision, mission, and programs. The implementation of life-skill education consisted of personal skills or self awareness, thinking skills, social skills, academic skills and vocational skills which were integrated in the teaching learning process and in all the school activities. Life-skill education, which cannot be separated from the three aspects of education (cognition, affection and psychomotor), enabled the students to prepare themselves for possible life problems and to solve them.

Abstract

Pre-test to 34 first-year students of SMKN 03 Malang showed that they had difficulties in solving mathematical problems of narrative square equations. The aim of this qualitative action research was to describe attempts in carrying out remedial teaching to overcome the students’ difficulties in solving such problems. The teaching process of the research was carried out four times as the research action. The results show that the researcher`s efforts in helping the students deal with questions of narrative square equations were successful, which was indicated by the students’ ability to do the questions correctly and by their responses to the interview.

Abstract

This study was intended to investigate the influence of sex education and assertion training toward teenagers’ attitude toward pre-marital sex. Pretest-posttest control groups weere employed. Subjects consisted of 32 teenagers who were divided into three groups. The first group consisting of 11 students were given sex education, the second group consisting of 11 students were given assertion training, and the last group, the control or waiting list group, consists of 10 people. Data were analysed using one way analysis of variance and this was supported with individual data analysis. The study found that there was highly significant influence of sex education toward teenagers’ attitude toward pre marital sex; and assertion training did not contribute to teenagers’ attitude toward pre marital sex although score of pre test and post test was different. This led to the conclusion that sex education was more influential than assertion training in influencing teenagers’ attitude toward pre-marital sex.

Abstract

The aims of this causal, comparative survey were to describe lecturers’ commitment and to examine the effects of personal, organizational, and non-organizational factors on lecturers’ commitment. Using proportional stratified random sampling, this study involved 153 lecturers of the III-rank wage scale selected out of the 513 lecturers. The data were collected through questionnaires and documents and then analyzed using correlations, multiple regression, and t-test. The findings suggest that personal and organizational factors were of good category and had positive relationship with lecturers’ commitment, whereas non-organizational factor was not as good and had no correlation with lecturers’ commitment. In general, the lecturers were highly committed and there was no difference in commitment between male and female lecturers.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of energetic games on the movement skills of mentally-retarded students. Employing a quasi-experimental design, this study involved 10 mentally-retarded students belonging to seven-year mental age. The data were collected using behavior test measuring movement skills, which were then analyzed using Mann Whitney U-test. The findings suggest that such games had positive effects on the improvement of the movement skills.

Abstract

This research was intended to analyze the characteristics and the conceptual framework of the professional development for secondary-school teachers of guidance and counseling. The data were collected from 62 teachers by using questionnaires, attitude scales, and ability test. The results of frequency percentages show that teachers’ professionalism varied, particularly in terms of their subject mastery, profession, and practical experience. Additionally, they had positive attitudes toward guindance and counseling. Unfortunately, the facilities to carry out guidance and counseling services were not adequate. It was then suggested that teachers of guidance and counseling be provided with continuous training.

Abstract

Developing curriculum for education faces philosophical problems when improvement of education quality is related to the curriculum coverage, the method of curriculum development, and the benefits of the curriculum. This article describes the philosophical problems in developing curriculum for education. The problems include how the curriculum sees human beings, how the curriculum is implemented, and what benefits education can offer.

Abstract

This is a study on the correlation between the four variables of cognitive styles, learning habits, achievement motivation, and locus of control and students’ achievement in mathematics, physics, Indonesian, English, economics, and geography. The data were collected through tests and documentation. The results indicated that there were positive correlations between cognitive styles, learning habits, achievement motivation, and locus of control and the students’ achievement. There were also significant correlations among these predictor variables: (1) between cognitive styles and learning habits and (2) between achievement motivation and locus of control. The path analysis indicated that the four predictable variables had effects on the students’ achievement.

Abstract

Professionalism and empowerment of teachers are essential in improving the quality of the national education. As supported by many research findings, teachers are determining factors in students’ achievement. This article proposes ways of developing teacher professionalism by integrating the programs in teacher education and the supervision of teachers through the establishment of Teacher Quality Certification, which periodically evaluates teacher performance. This implies that teachers should be appointed on the basis of an agreed term, not on a life-long term as implemented in the current system.
