Abstract

Wildlife in the world is pressured increasly as same as by human life. One of the goverment’s efforts to maintain the presence of wildlife is through conservation activities can be combined with spatial planning activities. It is called Open Green Space. One of open green space located in the city field is conservation of in-situ at the housing of cemara asri and conservation of ex-situ at the wildlife breeding university of north sumatra. It also function as means of recreation, urban physical. Social cultural, ecological, and economic value. Therefore, this study aims to determine the socio-economic characteristics of the visitors and the economic value of wildlife conservation areas and the influence of travel cost and cost of willingness to pay for level of visits per 1000 population. Result of the data analysis shows that the social-economic  characteristics based on gender, education level, income level, age group, and address are varied. While the economic value derived based on the travel cost is not significant and cost of willingness to pay is significant  to the level of visits per 1000 population. Abstract

Carbondioxide (CO2) produced by the fumes and industrial activities can harm humans if there are no trees or urban forests that can absorb CO2 and emissions resulting from human activities. Therefore, an effort to reduce air pollutants such as CO2 gas in urban areas, especially the city of Medan is a way to build a green open space in the form of urban forests. This study aimed to calculate the amount of CO2 emitted and the amount of O2 required in Medan based emissions from motor vehicles, human respiratory and industry and widely suspected optimal urban forest based on the function of absorbing CO2 and producing O2. Estimation results indicate that the total CO2 emissions in the city of Medan in 2014 amounted to 2,659,091.01 tons while demand for O2 in Medan in 2014 amounted to 2,430,843.07 tons . So the ability of the urban forest in the form of urban parks and green line in absorbing CO2 14683.84 tons and the capability of producing O2 amounted to 5551.2 tons .Keywords : CO2 emissions , O2 Demand, CO2 Absorbance, O2 Production, city park, green belt.

Abstract

There are some environmental problems in the development of urban areas including air, water and soil pollution. The high growth level of population which are followed by the establishment of industrial zones and settlements areas have cause less of vegetation areas. The purpose of this study was to identify areas which is potential to be developed as afforestation areas using geographic information systems by applications using SPOT 5 satellite imagey. Afforestation planning of bare land is in the form of afforestation in settlements areaswith total area of 7.14 hectares. Afforestation planning in the green belt is afforestation along roads and the river. There is 169.52 kilometers of road length to be afforested. Suitable plant species could be Pterocarpus indicus, Filicium decipiens, Polyalthia longifolia, Mimusops elengi, Switenia mahagoni, Casuarina equisetifolia, and Oreodoxa regia. Along the river bank of 17.27 kilometers length is recommended to be afforested with bamboo plants. Keywords: Reboisation Planning, SPOT 5 imagery, Geographic Information Systems (GIS)

Abstract

The absence of information about the level of change in vegetation index (NDVI) of forest land in the Nature Reserve Dolok Sibual-Buali is unclear. The decrease of NDVI would be related to forest damage. Forest damage will impact on the decrease of forest functions, especially its function as regulator of water management, flood prevention, erosion and carbon sequestration. This research was conducted in Nature Reserve Dolok Sibual-buali in May-September 2009 using Geographic Information System (GIS), Remote Sensing (RS) and Global Positioning System (GPS), which are three very useful spatial technology. Spatial analysis was done by overlaying several spatial data (parameters determining forest damage vulnerability level) to produce a new mapping units (land units) which will be used as the unit of analysis. The results showed regional nature reserve area Dolok Sibual-Buali is well preserved with class area from 0.4 to 0.8 (tropical rain forest) amounted to 4049.71 hectares, an increase of 32.15% vegetation cover to the class from 0.4 to 0.8 (tropical rain forest) in the nature reserve area Dolok Sibual-buali. Based on the analysis, nature reserve area Dolok Sibual-buali well preserved becausedof biophysical conditions taht forest cover which is at a high altitude with a moderate to steep slopes and quite far from the road and also does not have a big river. Causing difficulty of access into the area and also the absense of conveyace of natural wood. Keywords: GIS, RS, NDVI, Vegetation Coverage Change, overlays, Dolok Sibual-buali Nature Reserve
