Abstract

Information on the potential of forest stands is necessary to know the state and the amount of natural resources contained therein. Potential stands a forest area estimates can be obtained by various methods. This study aims to estimate and compare the potential stands between sample units and determine the most efficient unit instance performed in forest crop production. This study uses systematic random sampling with a sample on circular plots and tree sampling. Circular plots used area of 0,05 ha (12,62 m diameter) and tree sampling using 6, 8 and 10 trees in the sample. The results showed the best efficiency levels obtained 6 trees sampling, and accuracy approaching sample of circular plots. Circular plots had the lowest sampling error. Sampling error is less than 5%, so the circular plots had the highest accuracy compared to other sample units. Thus, the circular plots is a sample of the recommended applied to the public plant forest. Keywords: Potential stands, Samples, sampling error, efficiency

Abstract

Availability of wood species from natural forest that commonly used for building contructions, meuble, craft and industrial materials nowadays is increasingly limited and not balanced with increasing the needs of wood. To fulfill the needs should be used the species of wood that easily obtained, such as the species that are less well known from natural forest or cultivated by people. The purpose of this research is to evaluate the physical propersties and natural durability of pengkih wood towards termite attack. These physical properties testing is based on the ASTM D 143-94 standard with three replications in each sample. These natural durability of wood testing based on the SNI 01-7207-2006 standard with four replications in each sample. Based on the results of this research pengkih wood is including class II of wood strength, that have value of density substance is 1.5 and including class I of grade durability with percentage of weight lose about 0.3-0.6%. The smallest value of attack intensity is in the  wooden base and the largest is in the end of the wood. .   Key words : Pengkih Wood, physical  properties, natural  durability, termites

Abstract

Samosir District is one of the very prone to forest fire and land. This study aimed to determine the level of fire danger in forest and land use data Samosir regency with the maximum temperature, rainfall and hot spots daily, monthly and yearly 2009, 2010 and 2011. Data analysis was performed at the Laboratory of the Faculty of Forest Inventory Forestry Department of Agriculture using exel Spreadsheet software and Arc. View 3.3. The number of hot spots are detected and the high drought index obtained occur when rainfall is low and did not even rain. Low rainfall occurred in March-July, so in the many forest fires and land. While high rainfall occurred in August-February. Hot spots and drought indices can be used together as an early warning system for the prevention of fire and forest fire management and land on Samosir District. The research showed that the level of the fire crisis in Samosir Regency tend to to lower where fire was only became of the certain months during the year that is during the month of Maret-Juli. The prediction of fire Danger in Regency of Samosir be at the month of Maret-Juli, where very low rainfall value so that assess the high KBDI with the value make an index to the dryness be at the scale high-extreme that it’s among  1500-1749 and 1750-2000 Keywords : Forest and Land Fire Information, fire crisis, Dryness Index, Hotspot

Abstract

Ever-increasing demand for wood and forest potential of shrinking demand the use of wood in an efficient and prudent, for example by utilizing waste oil palm trunks which have not been optimally utilized a high-quality products for the future. The purpose of this study was to test the stability and strength of composite boards from waste oil palm trunks with a ratio of water-resistant coating acrylic of various brands. The hypothesis of this study is the differences between different brands of acrylic that affect the physical properties and mechanical properties of composite boards from oil palm trunk waste. There are three treatments in this study, which refers to the first treatment of the outer coating of the composite board with a water repellent Aquaproof brand, treatment of both the outer coating with MultiGuard composite board, and the third with a Waterproof coating. Testing of physical properties and mechanical properties refer to JIS A 5908-2003. The results showed that physical properties of the density has reached the target density with a value of 0.8 gr/cm3, where the density range of 0.78 - 0.82 gr/cm3, water content ranged from 8:23 to 9:11%, water absorption ranged from 8.69 - 10.86%, the development of thick for 2 hours ranged between 3.1 - 4.92% and thickness development during the 24 hours range from 11:34 to 15:53%. Meanwhile, for the results of testing the mechanical properties of obtained results of an internal bond 8:19 - 10.81 kg/cm2, a strong grasp of the screw 56.29 - 59.55 kgf, MOE 21124.08 - 31852.83 kg/cm2 and MOR reached 279.62 - 378.36 kg/cm2. Keywords: palm wood, composite boards, isocyanate, acrylic, and water repellent.

Abstract

The use of chemicals to control insects such as mosquitoes can have a negative impact on the environment and humans. The use of natural ingredients that are toxic and environmentally friendly like tuba plant (Derris elliptica (Roxb.) Benth) is one solution that is expected to be used as an alternative ingredient for protection against insects. This study research to determine the exact manner and evaluate extractive toxicity tuba root extract (Derris elliptica (Roxb). Benth) as an mosquito repellent by examining the effects of tuba root methanol extract and tuba  root chloroform extract  with different concentrations (0%, 2%, 4%, and 6%) on mortality and the mortality rate of mosquitoes. The results showed that there was a very significant effect of extract of tuba root against mosquito death. Tuba root with a concentration  6% is considered the most effective for killing 50% of mosquitoes. The results indicate that the tuba roots chloroform extract has its toxicity and  very high potential to be developed into an mosquito repellent. Keywords: Derris elliptica (Roxb.) Benth, tuba root, mosquito repellent, toxicity, mortality.
