Abstract

In the rural communities living in Indonesia, bamboo plays a very important contribution, but unfortunately the awareness of the importance of bamboo is still low for rural communities in general. This study aims to determine the potential availability and marketing of bamboo Belangke (Gigantochloa Widjaja pruriens) at Timbang Lawan Village, Sub-District of Bahorok, District of Langkat as raw material for bamboo incense. The method used in this study is an inventory and interview the owners of bamboo forests and bamboo incense marketing actors. The results of this study indicate that there are approximately 8.16 ha of bamboo forest species Belangke (G. pruriens Widjaja), with the potential rods that can be used for making incense sticks bamboo is 33,020 bamboos. Marketing system in the production of bamboo incense industries include bamboo processing, first seller, processors, seller, and consumers, with their respective profit margins ranging from bamboo to the merchant processor was 43%, 22.7%, 49%, and 58% . While the yield resulting from any processed bamboo rod with a size of 43 cm, 48 cm, 60 cm, and 65 cm were 90.34%, 86.50%, 84.92%, and 85.86%. Abstract

City is the center of government and human activities. The tendency of all activities centered in the city results increasing of city development. This impacts the reduction of Green Open Space especially the urban forest, the increasing of carbondioxide concentration and the reduction of oxygen in the air. Such condition can reduce the urban environment quality, because one of the functions of urban forest is to absorb carbondioxide. This study aims to analyze the needs of urban forest width based on the function of carbondioxide absorber in Medan up to 2050. The method used was by collecting primary and secondary datas, then data analysis was performed to determine the optimal width for urban forest. The results showed that in 2012 Medan city need urban forest width for carbondioxide absorber about 4.304,21 ha and in 2050 is 9.880,06 ha. Abstract

Agroforestry is a form of community forestry. Agroforestry management related to the optimization of land use for their daily livesof farmers and in order to conserve natural resources. This study aimed to determine the contribution of agroforestry  for house hold incomes in Sitaratoit and Lobulayan Village, Tapanuli Selatan District. The results showed that total community income was Rp. 875.900.000,- per year with details incomes from agroforestry was Rp. 597.000.000,- and income from the outside the utilization of agroforestry products contributed Rp.300.900.000,-. Contribution of agroforestry products for people's income is 63% of total income. Income community outside ofagroforestry such as farmer, trader, public civil servant, pensioner and entrepreneur contribute 37% of total income. This means that agroforestry contributed greatly to the house hold income. Key words: Agroforestry, Community Income, Contribution of Agroforestry

Abstract

Industrial Forest Plantation when viewed from storing carbon productivity (per unit area and per unit time) then there is a possibility of plantations will have the ability to store carbon in their stend in greater numbers than in natural forests because they have shorter cycle. The purpose of this study was to investigate and mapping the potential content of biomass, carbon storage and uptake of CO2 of Eucalyptus grandis stends Industrial Forest Plantation in PT. Toba Pulp Lestari Tbk. Sector Aek Nauli, Simalungun District, North Sumatra. The method of data calculation was using the model Allometric of Eucalyptus spp stand. There are four species of eucalyptus met at PT. Toba Pulp Lestari Tbk. Aek Nauli sector namely Eucalyptus hybrid, Eucalyptus grandis, Eucalyptus pelita and Eucalyptus urophylla. The results showed total biomass in Eucalyptus grandis has amounted to 8,4528 tons/ha, carbon storage at 3,8759 tons/ha, and absorption of CO2 at 14,2245 tonsCO2/ha. Abstract

Research on "The mitigation of wildlife-communities conflict in Gunung Leuser National Park" was conducted in July until August 2012. This research aimed to identify any factors caused wildlife that often enter into community plantations, to calculate the economic losses due to conflicts with wildlife and to analysis of wildlife handling by the communities. The method used in this research are observation, filling questionnaires and interviews to people directly. The results of this research are the factors that cause conflicts between wildlife with communities which the habitat destruction due to forest encroachment and the level of wildlife preference for the type of plant. The treatment used by communities to overcome the damage and economic loss are making sounds like fireworks, cheers by the owner of the land, shoot the animals with a pellet gun, maintained, done by making a trap or snare, made a bonfire and leave it. Average economic losses of crops in the Timbang Lawan and Timbang Jaya villages are Rp. 104.090,00/person/month, while average annual economic losses of crops in Timbang Lawan and Timbang Jaya villages are Rp.25.465,00/person/month. Abstract

The utilization of oil palm trunk could be used as raw material for particleboard. It was not only increased the added value, but also used as substitution of wood. The purpose of this research evaluated the resistance of particleboard from waste of oil palm trunk on subterranean termites attack. The variation of particle pretreatment were dont by soaking the particle in hot water (1,2 and 3 hours) and in cold water (24, 48 and 72 hours.) Particleboard were made from oil palm trunk using isocyanate of 7%, with size 30 x 30 x 1 cm and density target of 0,70 gr/cm3. The evaluation of the samples were done by grave yard test along 100 days for resistance of particleboard on subterranean termites. The result showed that percentages of particleboard weight loss to subterranean termites were 19,99-63,92%. Based on subterranean termites attack, the particleboard made from oil palm trunk was classified as moderate to very destroy. Keywords: oil palm trunk, isocyanat, particle board, subterranean termites

Abstract

These research were to known the particle pretreatment on the durability properties of particleboard on termites attack. The variation of particle pretreatment in this research were done by soaking the particle in hot water (1,2 and 3 hours) and cold water (24, 48 and 72 hours). The particle board was made from oil palm trunk using of phenol formaldehyde adhesive with size 30 cm x 30 cm x 1 cm and density target of 0.7 g/cm3. Particle board will be test by grave yard test along 100 days for durability from termites attack and will be compared by Indonesia National Standard (SNI) 01-7202-2006. The result showed that the weight loss of particle board values were 38.63-88.11%. Based on termites attack level, it was classified as very low durability. Keywords : oil palm trunk, phenol formaldehyde adhesive, particle board, subterranean termite.

Abstract

The waste of oil palm trunks could be used as raw material for particle boards. The purpose of these studies were to known the physical, mechanical properties and to know durability of particleboard on termites attack. The variation of treatment were temperature (160, 170 and 180 °C) and pressing time (5, 7, 8 and 11 minutes). Particleboards were made from waste of oil palm trunk using phenol formaldehyde of 8 % with size 30 cm x 30 cm x 1 cm and density target of 0.70 gr/cm3. Particleboard were tested physical and mechanical properties and will be compared by SNI 03-2105-2006. Also, it will be tested by grave yard test along 100 days for durability from termites attack.Result showed that density, moisture content, water absorption, thickness swelling, MOE, MOR and Internal bond were 0.65 -0.77 g/cm³, 4.89-7.76 %, 57.36-71.53 %, 7.03-13.28 %, 10.595 -19.258 kg/cm², 57.67 -135.55 kg/cm², 1.67-3.81 kg/cm², respectively. All of density, moisture content and internal bond fulfilled standard. The other hand all of MOE didn’t fulfilled the standard. While thickness swelling and MOR only several which fulfilled the standard. Weight loss particleboard from subterranean termites were 32.33-87.45 %. Particleboard durability was classified as very bad. The best treatment of particleboard was attained by pressing temperature of 160°C for 7 minutes.Key words: oil palm trunk, particleboard, temperature and pressing time, phenol formaldehida
