Abstract

Nypa is one of the non-timber forest product. Almost all parts of the nypa plant can be used, one of which is its leaves. Nypa leaves can be used as raw material of cigarette wrapping as a substitute of cigarette paper for curl up the tobacco. This study aims to find out of processing nypa leaves into cigarette wrapping, the financial feasibility, and the contribution of business to labor incomes at UD. Metro Jaya, Pekubuan village, Tanjungpura Sub-district, Langkat District. The research was conducted in June-July 2012. The sample was selected by purpossive sampling. The method using cost and revenue analysis, RC ratio analysis, break event point analysis, payback period analysis, and contribution to labour income. The processing of nypa leaves make it do the traditional system. The results showed that financially, the business of processing nypa leaves into cigarette wrapping was feasible, because its RC ratio more than one (1.44). BEP of production volume is 695 kg and BEP of price is about Rp. 17,250,- per kilogram. While the payback period is 8.03 and the contribution value from the business of cigarette wrapping to labor income is almost 100%. Keywords : nypa leaves, cigarette wrapping, financial analysis, contribution to income.

Abstract

Bamboo was potencial matter as the substitution of wood, especialy in bamboo basket making.  Bamboo basket processing was slowly developed by small industries. This cased aims to determine the financial feasibility and marketing of bamboo basket. To determine the financial feasibility analysis through Cost-Revenue Ratio (R / C), Capital Return Time (Payback Period) and Break Even Point (BEP) analysis. To determine marketing margins distribution used snowball sampling method. The results showed that the financial analysis processing bamboo basket was feasible by R / C was more great than 1 (1.62 and 1.63). There are 3 channels of marketing of bamboo baskets, and the most efficient marketing was channel I. Keywords: bamboo, basket bamboo, financial analysis, marketing channels, marketing margins

Abstract

Mapping the potential of carbon was an inventory activities that the carbon content and deposits can be mapped and known. Mapping the potential of carbon would provide information that will be useful in the management of peatland resources. The objective of this study was to map peatland area, know the type of land cover and know the amount of carbon stored in the peat. This research method was the analysis of Landsat ETM + image data of 2012, field measurements and sampling and soil analysis results of field measurements. The results showed the whole area of peatland was 6289.08 ha or about 2.513% of the total land Humbang Hasundutan district. Land cover types are rice peat, peat swamp forests, non-vegetation, shrubs peat, peat mining areas, and coffee farming. Total carbon content in peat Humbang Hasundutan District of 170,45 tonnes. Peatland management should be done by considering the carrying capacity and environmental sustainability, in order to obtain benefits not only on the environment but also on the social and economic community. Abstract

This study was aimed to identify the technique of processing, financial feasibility, and business development strategies of  Api api fruits (Avicennia officinalis L.) processing at Dusun Paluh Merbau, Tanjung Rejo Vilage,Sub District of Percut Sei Tuan, District of Deli Serdang. The analysis methods used are descriptive analysis, financial analysis, and analysis of the business development strategy by using SWOT analysis. The results showed that the product of processed Api api fruits at Dusun Paluh Merbau are chips, donuts, spongecake and dawet. All kinds of processing are feasible to be developed and have a favorable prospect. It can be seen from the value of  R / C ratio which is more than one. Based on the SWOT analysis, the major threat that influence on the development of processing Api api fruits  are the absence of permit from the Department of Health and halal certificate’s from MUI to ensure the product is safe for consumption. Key words: Avicennia officinalis, finance analysis, SWOT analysis.

Abstract

One of the green open space  that enough effective to reduce carbon emission at around the street in town is a green belt. Plants that planting in green belt was good to absorb carbon emission. So its important to knowing the kind of plants there. The aim of this research is to know what kind of plants that planting in green belt. This research have done at 21 green belt in 21 district in Medan city. The sample of belt and plants in belt had taken by purposive sampling and sensus method. And the method of data analysis was doing by identification species. The results showed that finding 33 of species plants at green belt choosen with the species was dominated is Angsana (Pterocarpus indicus). Key words: Green Belt, Identification Plants, Reducing Emissions, Angsana

Abstract

Land suitability evaluation is activity comparing conditions required by land utilization type with characteristics or land quality owned by used land. The purpose of this research was to evaluate  land suitability for forest trees species and multi purpose trees species in Payung Subdistrict Karo Regency. This research was conducted in four stages: 1) Research  preparations, 2) Undertaking research in location, 3) Data processing, 4) Result presentation. The method of this research is matching system. Location has 10 land units. Land unit components were including slope, soil type and land cover. Actual land suitability for Mahogany and Pine dominantly are non suitable and for Ecalyptus, Durian and Avocado are marginal suitable. Potential land suitability for Mahogany and Pine have the same  class as actual land suitability. It is  because the resistor  factor is permanently. Eucalyptus, Durian and Avocado have different land suitability as  actual land suitability for some land units. It is because the resistor factor isn’t permanently. Abstract

Air pollution has become a serious problem in several major cities in Indonesia, especially Medan. Technological development in the field of transportation contribute to the increasing of energy necessaries, which eventually cause the increasing of energy’s residual that influence the air quality and potentially contaminate the environment. Campus USU as a renowned in Medan should be prepared as a role models to manage the existing condition of air pollution. For that, conducted research on existing vegetation in the campus USU in terms of the flow field emissions from motor vehicles which through the campus USU based on the traffic daily density. The collecting of vegetation data use the census method while for the daily traffic data used the traffic counting method. From the vegetation data will be computed extensive of canopy cover for each tree and will be multiplied by a factor of CO2 absorption coefficient in order to get the capability of vegetation to absorb the CO2 at campus USU. Then, from these capabilities will be obtained how emission levels that can not be absorbed by green open space. If the campus area is not able to reduce the emissions of existing discharge, then the control efforts by planting the trees in the campus area is needed. The research has been done about the existing vegetation in campus USU showed that there are 68 species with 3 types of deployment of green open space. The potential of CO2 absorption from 4.254 trees in the campus of USU Medan is 3327.25 kg / hr lower than the burden of emissions resulting from motor vehicle that is 6088.14 kg / hr. This absorption is not sufficient to reduce the burden of CO2 emissions resulting from motor vehicles. Keywords: Burden of CO2 Emissions, CO2 Absorbtion, Campus USU, Tree Species Distribution, Green Open Space

Abstract

Research on "Analysis of the Trees and Nest Characteristics of Sumatran Orangutan (Pongo abelii) in Bukit Lawang Langkat District" was conducted in July until September 2012 at Pusat Pengamatan Orangutan Sumatera (PPOS) in Bukit Lawang, Bahorok, Langkat District. This study aims to investigate the characteristics of the nest tree and Sumatran Orangutan (Pongo abelii) based on age level and gender. Research method used line transect and focal animal sampling. Some characteristics of the Orangutans trees most often found in meranti trees (Shorea sp.) as Orangutans nest and feed, with hight 20-25 m, diameter 20-30 cm, branch pattern is adjacent and type of canofy is spherical, nest high 16-25 m. The position of the nest is most commonly found nesting in position III and nest type is B. There are differences and similarities between Orangutan who were subjected to experiments in determining the type of nest trees, nest trees high, nest trees diameter, nest high and position of nest. Keyword: Nest, Pongo abelii, Shorea sp., Sumateran Orangutans Trees and nest characteristic.
