Abstract

Purpose of the study: This study aims to identify and analyze the types of grammatical errors made by tenth-grade students in writing recount texts, particularly in the use of the simple past tense, using Surface Strategy Taxonomy and Linguistic Category Taxonomy to reveal patterns of learners’ grammatical difficulties. Methodology: This research employed a descriptive error analysis approach, combining qualitative interpretation with quantitative frequency analysis. The data consisted of recount texts written by tenth-grade students of Senior high school 1 Sumberejo Tanggamus, collected through documentation. The errors were identified, classified, and analyzed based on Surface Strategy Taxonomy and Linguistic Category Taxonomy, with percentages used to indicate error tendencies rather than statistical generalization. Main Findings: The results show that misformation errors were the most dominant type (57.3%), followed by omission (24.3%), addition (5.6%), and misordering (2.8%). Most errors occurred in morphological and syntactic categories, particularly in verb forms related to the simple past tense. These findings indicate that students’ difficulties stem from incomplete mastery of grammatical rules and verb inflections rather than careless mistakes. Novelty/Originality of this study: This study contributes a dual-taxonomy error analysis that integrates Surface Strategy and Linguistic Category approaches to provide a more comprehensive diagnosis of students’ grammatical errors. The findings offer specific pedagogical implications, including the need for targeted grammar instruction, focused practice on verb-form accuracy, and error-based corrective feedback in teaching recount text writing.

Abstract

Purpose of the study: This study aims to examine the effectiveness of audio-visual media in improving students’ writing skills in advertisement texts among eighth-grade students at SMPN 87 Jakarta. Methodology: The research employed a quantitative experimental design using a one-group pretest–posttest model. The participants were eighth-grade students selected through random sampling. Data were collected through writing tests focusing on advertisement text composition and analyzed using descriptive statistics and inferential analysis with a paired-sample t-test. Main Findings: The findings indicate a significant improvement in students’ advertisement text writing skills after the implementation of audio-visual media. The mean post-test score (84.56) was higher than the mean pre-test score (71.25), and the calculated t-value (5.46) exceeded the critical t-value (2.04), demonstrating a statistically significant effect. The improvement reflects students’ enhanced ability to develop persuasive content, organize ideas, and apply appropriate language features in advertisement texts. Novelty/Originality of this study: This study contributes to language learning research by providing empirical evidence on the effectiveness of audio-visual media specifically for teaching advertisement text writing at the junior high school level. Unlike studies that focus broadly on multimedia use, this research emphasizes the alignment between instructional media, learning materials, and writing objectives, offering a practical model for integrating audio-visual resources into writing instruction.

Abstract

Purpose of the study: This study aims to identify and describe the forms of environmental wisdom portrayed in the novel Rahasia Pelangi by Riawani Elyta and Sabrina Ws through an ecocritical perspective. Methodology: This research employed a qualitative descriptive method using an ecocriticism approach. The data source was the novel Rahasia Pelangi. The tools used included data reduction sheets, data presentation tables, and verification guides following Miles and Huberman’s qualitative analysis model. No software was used. Main Findings: The study revealed twenty-two forms of environmental wisdom represented in the narrative. These findings were categorized into five aspects: respect for nature, moral responsibility toward nature, solidarity with nature, affection and care for nature, and attitudes that avoid disturbing natural life. These categories show how the novel embeds ecological awareness through character actions and narrative events. Novelty/Originality of this study: This study provides a new contribution by applying literary ecocriticism to explore environmental wisdom within an Indonesian popular novel that has rarely been analyzed from this perspective. It advances knowledge by mapping ecological moral values in narrative structures and offering a model for identifying environmental ethics in contemporary Indonesian fiction.

Abstract

Purpose of the study: This study aims to describe the forms of code-mixing in the YouTube Shorts content of the Podcast Kesel Aje channel and to explain its implementation regarding language aesthetics, specifically in the selection of appropriate vocabulary. Methodology: This qualitative research used the human instrument for data collection. Data in the form of words and phrases were gathered from Podcast Kesel Aje YouTube Shorts videos from September–October 2023 using library techniques, observation, and note-taking. Main Findings: The research identified 181 instances of code-mixing, consisting of 176 at the word level and 5 at the phrase level. No code-switching was found. The dominant form was word-level code-mixing, primarily involving Indonesian mixed with English, Chinese, Javanese, and Betawi. Novelty/Originality of this study: This study provides new insights by specifically analyzing code-mixing in the short-form video format (YouTube Shorts) of a popular youth-oriented podcast. It also traces the etymological origin of frequently used pronouns (lu/gua) to Chinese, challenging the common assumption of Betawi origin.

Abstract

Purpose of the study: This classroom action research aimed to investigate whether the Know-Want-Learned (KWL) strategy could improve the reading comprehension of descriptive texts among seventh-grade junior high school students, with implications for addressing the foundational literacy skills measured by international assessments such as PISA (Programme for International Student Assessment). Methodology: Employing the Kemmis & McTaggart model over two cycles, this study collected data using pre-tests, post-tests, observation sheets, teacher interviews, and student questionnaires. Quantitative data from tests were analyzed by calculating mean scores and the percentage of students passing the Minimum Mastery Criterion (KKM), while qualitative data were analyzed thematically to assess engagement and metacognitive development. Main Findings: The implementation of the KWL strategy significantly improved student outcomes. The percentage of students passing the KKM increased from 20% in the pre-test to 40% in post-test 1, and further to 80% in post-test 2. Qualitative data indicated increased student enthusiasm, active participation, and the development of metacognitive strategies such as questioning and reflection that align with core PISA reading literacy competencies. Novelty/Originality of this study: This study provides empirical evidence from an Indonesian junior high school context, specifically linking the KWL strategy not only to improved classroom performance but also to the development of higher-order reading skills relevant to PISA frameworks. It demonstrates KWL as a practical, low-tech strategy that can help bridge the gap between daily instruction and the literacy competencies emphasized in global assessments.

Abstract

Purpose of the study: This study aims to describe the forms, meanings, and semiotic functions of language in the traditional wedding discourse of the Flores culture in West Manggarai Regency, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. Methodology: The research uses a qualitative descriptive approach. Data were collected through structured interviews and participatory observation, supported by documentation such as photos and field notes. Data analysis was conducted using qualitative descriptive techniques and the referential equivalence method (metode padan referensial). Main Findings: The study identified unique semiotic forms in both linguistic units (words, phrases, sentences, discourse) and non-linguistic elements (symbols, objects, participants) throughout the wedding stages. These elements carry specific cultural meanings and functions, reinforcing social bonds, cultural identity, and communication within the Manggarai Barat community. Novelty/Originality of this study: This research provides a semiotic analysis of Manggarai Barat wedding rituals using Halliday’s sociosemiotic framework, which has not been extensively applied in previous studies on Flores culture. It contributes to the preservation and linguistic documentation of local oral traditions and enriches the study of language-culture correlations in Indonesia.

Abstract

Purpose of the study: This study aims to systematically identify, describe, and categorize the moral education values contained in the Javanese folktale anthology "Bandha Warisan." The analysis focuses on an in-depth exploration of the implicit and explicit ethical messages in the narrative, as well as its relevance as a source of local wisdom-based teaching materials in the context of character education in Indonesia. Methodology: This research uses descriptive qualitative analysis. Data were collected through careful reading and note-taking techniques from the “Bandha Warisan” anthology. Data validity was ensured through expert judgement (semantic validity) and reliability testing. Main Findings: The analysis identified 31 moral values, systematically categorized into four relational domains: human-God (accepting destiny, prayer, gratitude, repentance) human-others (harmony, mutual aid, respect for parents, cooperation, affection) human-environment (cleanliness, caring for animals); and human-self (honesty, humility, diligence, generosity, keeping promises). These values reflect core Javanese ethical principles such as nrimo, rukun, and andhap asor. Novelty/Originality of this study: This study provides a systematic mapping of moral values from a modern, curated Javanese folktale anthology. It bridges traditional wisdom with contemporary character education, offering a practical reference for educators and parents in using local literature for moral pedagogy. The research highlights the anthology's role as an active instrument for cultural transmission and ethical formation in the modern era.
