Abstract

Quality of sleep is an essential aspect of health that is often compromised among first-year students due to lifestyle changes and excessive gadget use. This study aims to determine the relationship between gadget use intensity and sleep quality in first-year students at the Faculty of Public Health, Nusa Cendana University. An observational analytic study with a cross-sectional approach was conducted on 116 students from the class of 2025. Data were collected using validated questionnaires on gadget usage intensity (α = 0.872) and sleep quality (α = 0.795), analyzed using Spearman's Rho correlation. A positive and significant relationship was found between gadget usage intensity and sleep quality (r = 0.607; p < 0.001). Ordinal logistic regression showed that gadget usage intensity accounted for 50% of the variation in sleep quality. High gadget use intensity significantly correlates with poorer sleep quality. Academic institutions should implement digital curfews to help students manage sleep health during their academic transition.

Abstract

Cancer survivors experience various physical, psychological, social, and functional changes throughout diagnosis, treatment, and recovery. Understanding cancer survivors' lived experiences is essential for describing changes in their perceived quality of life. This study aimed to explore these experiences from the time of the initial cancer diagnosis throughout the entire treatment process. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis based on the participants lived experiences. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with five cancer survivors residing at the Cancer Patient Shelter of the Cancer Support Community in Kupang City. Participants were selected using purposive sampling. The findings revealed that all participants experienced emotional responses, including fear, anxiety, stress, and uncertainty, following their cancer diagnosis. Participants also reported physical changes, such as pain, fatigue, weight loss, and limitations in performing daily activities. Treatments, including surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and regular medical follow-up, contributed to improvements in participants' health despite persistent treatment-related side effects. Family support emerged as the primary source of motivation, enabling participants to continue their treatment. Furthermore, the experience of living with cancer encouraged healthier lifestyle changes, increased awareness of the importance of early detection, and strengthened participants' ability to adapt to their illness. The lived experiences of cancer survivors demonstrate that quality of life is influenced by physical condition, psychological responses, social support, treatment adherence, and lifestyle changes. Continuous support from family members and healthcare providers is essential for helping cancer survivors maintain their quality of life throughout the treatment journey.

Abstract

Hypertension is rising among the productive-age population, with fast food consumption being a significant modifiable factor. This study aimed to provide a descriptive overview of fast food consumption patterns and the hypertension risk profile in Kayu Putih Village in 2026. This quantitative, descriptive cross-sectional study (rapid survey) involved 210 respondents selected via simple random sampling. Data were collected through face-to-face interviews using a structured questionnaire. Fast food consumption habits were categorized as “good” or “bad” based on a composite score of frequency, food type, and portion size, using the median as the cut-off point. Hypertension risk was determined based on self-reported medical history and symptomatic assessment rather than direct clinical measurement. Results showed that 44.76% of respondents consumed fast food 1–2 times per week, with instant noodles (56.19%) and fried chicken (52.86%) being the most preferred types. While 68.57% were categorized as having bad consumption habits, only 4.76% were identified as being at risk for hypertension. It is concluded that while fast food consumption is common, the perceived hypertension risk remains low. Strengthening health promotion regarding balanced nutrition is necessary for prevention.

Abstract

Breast cancer is the top cause of illness and death among women globally. Breast Self-Examination (BSE) is a method for early detection that can be done independently; yet, its practice among teenage girls is still not ideal. This research seeks to outline the understanding, perceptions, and practices related to BSE among teenage girls in Naikolan Village, Maulafa Sub-district, Kupang City. The research utilized a quantitative descriptive approach through a quick survey method and a two-phase cluster random sampling strategy, with 210 female adolescent participants aged 15–24 years. Data were gathered through interviews utilizing a structured questionnaire entered through the Epi Collect 5 application. The results indicated that most respondents (76.19%) lacked adequate knowledge of BSE, especially concerning when to perform the examination and signs of breast irregularities. A total of 56.19% of participants showed negative sentiments, particularly concerning their faith in the long-term advantages of BSE. At the same time, 73.81% of participants showed behavior deemed as supportive of BSE. These results reveal a disparity between awareness and beliefs versus actions, highlighting the necessity for organized and ongoing health education initiatives to bolster the cognitive and emotional bases of adolescent girls in conducting self-examinations for early breast cancer detection.
