Abstract

Pneumonia remains a significant global health burden. The 2015 Global Burden of Disease Study identified lower respiratory tract infections as the leading cause of death from infectious disease and the fifth leading cause of death overall. One of the potential complications of pneumonia is lung abscess formation. This paper aims to report and discuss a case of cavitary pneumonia in a 50-year-old male patient, which radiologically mimicked aspergilloma. A 50-year-old male presented to the Emergency Department of Bethesda Hospital, Yogyakarta, with complaints of hemoptysis (~25 cc) and shortness of breath. Three days prior, he had completed an 8-day course of treatment for pneumonia at Tjitrowardojo Purworejo Hospital. Physical examination revealed anemia, dullness in the 3rd and 4th left intercostal spaces, and crackles in both lungs. Laboratory tests showed leukocytosis, neutrophilia, lymphopenia, and elevated C-reactive protein. Imaging revealed consolidation and a cavity with a crescent sign in the left lung. Biopsy did not reveal malignancy, bacteria, or fungi—only inflammatory cells. TB and HIV tests were negative. The patient was diagnosed with a lung abscess and treated with antibiotics (levofloxacin), antifungals (fluconazole), and antifibrinolytics (tranexamic acid). This case illustrates how a lung abscess can radiologically mimic an aspergilloma, particularly with the presence of a crescent sign on imaging. Accurate diagnosis relies on a combination of imaging, microbiologic testing, and clinical correlation. The patient responded well to pharmacological therapy during a 9-day hospitalization and follow-up.

Abstract

MPs are plastic particles less than 5 mm in size. MPs can enter through the mouth and into the digestive tract, circulate throughout the body's tissues including breast tissue. Research on the size of particles that can be deposited in adipose tissue has not yet been conducted. This quasi-experimental research aims to explain differences in levels of microplastic particles due to differences in processing temperatures in breast milk in storage bags. Breast milk samples were taken from breastfeeding mothers at the Mulyorejo Community Health Center, Surabaya. The breast milk was put into plastic bags for the study group and glass tubes for the control group. Samples will be separated based on breast milk storage temperature and as a control group. The sample will be extracted and examined. After that, additional inspection tests were carried out in the form of micro-FTIR. It was found that there was no significant difference in MPs particle levels with respect to differences in breast milk processing temperatures in storage bags. However, there were significant differences between the control group and the study group.

Abstract

Upper respiratory tract infection (URTI) is an acute infection that affects the nose, paranasal sinuses, tonsils, pharynx, and larynx. It is commonly found in children under the age of 5. One of the most frequent and concerning complications of URTI in children is acute otitis media (AOM), a middle ear infection that can negatively impact a child’s health. Understanding the relationship between URTI and AOM is important to enable early prevention and treatment. This study aims to examine the effect of URTI on the incidence of AOM in children aged 0–5 years at the ENT Polyclinic of PHC Hospital Surabaya. This research employs an observational analytic design using a cross-sectional method with non-probability purposive sampling. Data were collected from medical records of pediatric patients aged 0–5 years who visited the ENT Polyclinic between January and December 2022. The data were analyzed using the contingency coefficient test, and a result was considered statistically significant if p < 0.05. Out of 45 patients who met the study criteria, the average age was 2.82 years. There were more males (62%) than females (38%). A total of 19 children (42%) had both URTI and AOM, 6 children (13%) had AOM without URTI, and 20 children (44%) had URTI without AOM. The analysis showed a p-value of 0.019 and a contingency coefficient of 0.331, indicating a moderate association between URTI and AOM. URTI has a significant influence on the incidence of acute otitis media in children aged 0–5 years at the ENT Polyclinic of PHC Hospital Surabaya.

Abstract

Animal bites that transmit rabies are zoonotic diseases and remain a public health problem in Indonesia, including in East Nusa Tenggara, which has experienced an extraordinary event (KLB). Since 2023, the Alak Health Center has routinely conducted rabies monitoring due to the significant increase in cases every year and the high risk of death if left untreated. Therefore, a structured monitoring system is essential for rabies prevention and control. This study aims to describe the implementation of the rabies monitoring system at the Alak Health Center using a systems approach. A qualitative descriptive design was used, involving three monitoring officers as respondents. Data collection was carried out using questionnaires and mobile phones for documentation. The results showed that the input variables—materials, funds, and markets—were well met, but human resources were still inadequate because officers were assigned various monitoring responsibilities. In terms of process, epidemiological investigations and medical management have been carried out 100%. Outputs are met through routine reporting to the Kupang City Health Office. However, the expected results have not been achieved due to limited public awareness and participation in monitoring the movement of wild animals. The impact variable was achieved, as none of the 22 cases reported in weeks 1–19 of 2025 developed into suspected rabies cases. This demonstrates the effectiveness of monitoring in preventing rabies cases. However, ongoing challenges include excessive workload for monitoring officers and inadequate community engagement, highlighting areas for improvement in the sustainability of rabies control efforts.

Abstract

University students' nutritional status serves as a vital indicator for evaluating human resource quality in higher education. Despite their knowledge in nutrition and health, public health students are not immune to overweight risks due to lifestyle changes during college life. This study analyzed the relationship between eating habits and physical activity with overweight incidence among public health students at Faculty of Public Health, Nusa Cendana University. A cross-sectional study was conducted in March-April 2025 involving 210 students selected through cluster random sampling. Data were collected using validated questionnaires and analyzed using chi-square tests with 95% confidence interval. The study found significant relationships between eating habits and overweight incidence (p=0.041<0.05) and between physical activity and overweight incidence (p=0.041<0.05). Among students with good eating habits, 27.4% were overweight, while 25.8% of those with poor eating habits were overweight. For physical activity, 19.7% of students with good physical activity levels were overweight compared to 35.5% with poor physical activity levels. Both eating habits and physical activity significantly influence overweight incidence among public health students, highlighting the need for integrated health promotion programs.

Abstract

Gastritis is a digestive disorder caused by inflammation of the stomach that often occurs among students. Unhealthy lifestyles such as irregular eating patterns and high stress are the main risk factors for gastritis. Nusa Cendana University is a relevant location to conduct this survey because of the large number of students and the habit of consuming regional specialties that have the potential to trigger gastritis. This study aims to analyze the relationship between stress levels and eating patterns with the incidence of gastritis in Nusa Cendana University students. This study used a rapid survey design with a cross-sectional approach. A sample of 210 students was selected using the cluster random sampling technique using the Csurvey application. The independent variables consisted of eating patterns and stress, while the dependent variable was the incidence of gastritis. Primary data were collected through questionnaires, and secondary data were obtained from the Kupang City Health Office and Nusa Cendana University. Data analysis used the chi-square test. The results of the study were that out of 210 respondents, the majority of students who had poor eating patterns and experienced stress tended to experience gastritis. The results of the chi-square test showed a significant relationship between eating patterns and stress with the incidence of gastritis, where the p-value = 0,000. So it can be concluded that poor diet and high stress levels can increase the risk of gastritis in students at Nusa Cendana University in 2025.

Abstract

Unhealthy diets, such as Western-type diets, are major contributors to metainflammation underlying the progression of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). This narrative review analyzed 10 studies (2014–2024) from Google Scholar and PubMed to explore dietary roles in NAFLD progression. Western-type, hypercaloric, high-fructose, and HFHS diets worsen NAFLD by increasing inflammatory biomarkers and reducing oxidative stress. Conversely, dietary interventions, including the DASH diet, freshwater fish–based diets, and the Mediterranean diet, attenuate metainflammation and slow NAFLD progression. The significance of this topic lies in the global health burden of NAFLD and the increasing recognition of metainflammation as a key driver of its progression. While several pharmacological candidates have shown promise, dietary strategies remain essential in clinical practice due to their accessibility, safety, and preventive potential. This review underscores the clinical relevance of targeting metainflammation through specific dietary interventions and offers insights for both therapeutic guidance and public health policy.
