Abstract

Advances in biomedical science such as stem cells offer great potential in the field of health, especially for regenerative therapy and the treatment of degenerative diseases. However, behind these benefits lie various ethical and moral issues related to the origin of the tissue used for stem cells. For example, embryonic stem cells used for therapy and research raise various issues from different perspectives, such as religion, law, society, and science. Through a systematic literature review focusing on stem cell research and therapy from an ethical perspective, using a qualitative descriptive approach, in-depth information was gathered related to the concepts, moral values, and bioethical controversies that have arisen in the development of stem cell science. This study discusses stem cells from various perspectives, such as law, religion, society, science, including regulatory provisions in Indonesia. This study also reviews the development of stem cell bioethics, which began with moral issues related to the sources of stem cells used, such as the use of human embryos, to the existence of more ethical alternative solutions such as induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs). The application of stem cell therapy and research must be carried out in accordance with bioethical principles and principles that respect human dignity, so that its application is carried out responsibly and humanely. Thus, stem cells can provide optimal benefits and welfare for humanity.

Abstract

Cervical cancer is one of the leading causes of death among women worldwide, with 99% of cases caused by the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). It also remains a major cause of morbidity and mortality among women in Indonesia. Preventive efforts can be carried out through HPV vaccination. This study aimed to determine the effect of educational leaflets on the knowledge and attitudes of adolescent girls regarding the HPV vaccine. A quantitative method was applied using a Pre-Experimental One-Group Pretest-Posttest design. The sampling technique used was quota sampling, involving 33 female students from grades XI and XII at Budhi Warman 1 Senior High School, Jakarta. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon test and the Paired Sample T-Test. The results showed a significant increase after the distribution of the leaflet (p-value = 0.000), while there was no significant change in the respondents’ attitudes toward the HPV vaccine (p-value = 0.889). Education through leaflet media effectively improved adolescent girls’ knowledge about the HPV vaccine but did not significantly influence their attitudes. Promoting HPV vaccination in schools plays an important role in increasing adolescent awareness and encouraging preventive behavior, which is expected to reduce the incidence of cervical cancer through higher vaccination coverage.

Abstract

Generation Z faces increasingly complex academic, social, and emotional pressures, leading to the adoption of various coping strategies, including smoking behavior. Despite extensive public health campaigns, smoking is still perceived as a quick way to relieve emotional tension. This study aims to explore how Generation Z interprets smoking as a coping mechanism for emotional regulation. A qualitative approach using phenomenological and case study methods was employed. The participants consisted of ten male individuals aged 15–24 years, including nine active smokers and one former smoker. Data were collected through semi-structured in-depth interviews and light observation, then analyzed thematically while ensuring credibility through triangulation and member checking. The findings indicate that academic stress, family conflict, social pressure, anxiety, and boredom are the main triggers for smoking behavior. Smoking is interpreted as emotional escape, calming strategy, personal space (me time), and part of social identity. The emotional process reflects tension before smoking, calmness during smoking, and relief often accompanied by regret afterward. This study concludes that smoking functions as an emotional-focused coping strategy that provides temporary relief but tends to be maladaptive.

Abstract

Background: Older adults in nursing homes face a significant risk of joint contractures and functional decline due to limited mobility, which ultimately diminishes their quality of life. Range of Motion (ROM) exercises serve as a vital non-pharmacological intervention to address these issues. Objective: This systematic literature review aims to synthesize empirical evidence regarding the effectiveness of ROM exercises on the functional capacity and quality of life of institutionalized older adults. Methods: Following PRISMA guidelines, a structured search was conducted in the Scopus database for publications between 2022 and 2024. Ten studies met the inclusion criteria and were synthesized. Results: The review indicates that structured ROM programs, particularly active ROM, significantly improve joint flexibility, muscle strength, and functional independence (ADL). Furthermore, ROM exercises promote mental well-being by reducing anxiety and increasing self-control. However, challenges such as limited skilled staff and low resident motivation remain significant barriers. Conclusion: ROM is a practical, low-risk strategy that effectively preserves functional independence and enhances the overall quality of life for older adults in nursing homes.

Abstract

Excessive use of pesticides by farmers, especially without adequate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), carries the risk of health problems such as decreased cholinesterase enzyme activity. Exposure to pesticides particularly organophosphates, can cause poisoning through the mouth, skin, and respiratory tract. Organophosphates work by inhibiting the acetylcholinesterase enzyme, causing an accumulation of acetylcholine in the body. Pesticide residues also have the potential to cause neurological and hormonal disorders, and even carcinogenesis. Yogyakarta is one of the regions with the highest number of pesticide poisoning cases. Increasing farmers' knowledge about the dangers of pesticides and the use of PPE are needed to reduce health risks. The aim of research was to determine the activity of the cholinesterase enzyme in the Wono Rejo Selopamioro Farmer Group, Imogiri, Bantul, Special Region of Yogyakarta. This study is a descriptive study. The sample in this study was the serum of 13 respondents. The examination in this study used the Kinetic Photometric Test method. A study of cholinesterase enzyme activity in the blood showed that four respondents (31%) experienced pesticide poisoning, with concentrations of 3,973 U/L, 4,316 U/L, 3,973 U/L, and 4,418 U/L.
