Abstract

Soft-boned milkfish is a popular processed product of the milkfish (Chanos chanos), but it has a limited shelf life. Retort sterilization technology with vacuum retort pouch packaging can extend shelf life, but it is necessary to study the right combination of temperature and time to maintain product quality. This study aims to analyze the effect of a combination of temperature (110 °C, 121 °C, and 130 °C) and sterilization time (10, 20, and 30 min) on Total Plate Count (TPC), total protein content, and hedonic quality of the product. The parameters analyzed in this study were TPC with two replications (duplicates), total protein content measured by the Biuret method, and hedonic quality assessed through the hedonic test. The results showed that all treatments produced TPC below the SNI 7388:2009 limit of 5 × 105 CFU/g. The 121 ℃ treatment for 30 min maintained a total protein content of 26.17% and TPC value of 1.00 × 10² CFU/g, while the 130 ℃ treatment for 10 min produced a total protein content of 20.85% and TPC value of 1.00 × 10⁰ CFU/g, and produced the most favorable hedonic quality. Therefore, 130 °C for 10 min is recommended as the optimal sterilization temperature and time, because it is able to produce products that are microbiologically safe and preferred by panelists. Moisture content plays a role in influencing TPC value, total protein content, and hedonic quality. It is recommended to research the effect of temperature and sterilization time of soft-boned milkfish retort on the water content of soft-boned milkfish.

Abstract

The Troso fabric industry in Indonesia contributes significantly to the national economy but also produces liquid waste containing chemical dyes. Liquid waste from the Troso weaving industry exceeds wastewater quality standards, including BOD, COD, and pH, and can pollute the environment if not managed properly. Chemical and physical methods for wastewater removal in dyeing have already been used, but still have limitations, such as being expensive and causing environmental side effects. Therefore, the biological method is preferred to overcome these problems. The present study aims to develop a Rhizopus oligosporus mycelium immobilization system using chitin from shrimp shells and to test its adsorption capacity for removing a dye agent (direct yellow) from Troso fabric dye-contaminated wastewater. The immobilization was performed using both solid-state and submerged techniques in potato dextrose broth (PDB). The one-factor-at-a-time (OFAT) method was used to determine the optimal pH and the optimal number of biosorbents for efficient dye removal. The results showed that the optimal immobilization system was the solid-state technique, which yielded a well-developed hyphal structure on the chitin surface with a cell-loading capacity (CLC) of 1.19 gbiomass/gmatrix. In the adsorption capacity (qe) assay, the results showed that pH 7.0 and 3 bio-balls application provided the highest adsorption capacity of 122.608 mg/g and 64.73% color removal. This study shows the potential use of immobilized chitin as a biosorbent for effectively treating textile wastewater.

Abstract

Dragonflies (Odonata) are members of the class Insecta that can be used as bioindicators to assess the quality of aquatic ecosystems. This study aims to evaluate the diversity of dragonfly species in the Karimunjawa area as an effort to assess the condition of aquatic ecosystems and their surrounding environments. Data collection was conducted in four habitat types: forest, rice fields, settlements, and mangroves. The method used was point count, with observations carried out in the morning from 08:00–11:00 WIB and from 15:00–17:00 WIB. The results showed that dragonfly diversity varied among habitat types, where the mangrove habitat had the highest species diversity (H’ = 2.23), while the settlement habitat showed the lowest richness (Dmg = 1.31). Several species recorded have the potential to serve as bioindicators of aquatic environmental quality in Karimunjawa. These findings indicate that the ecosystem conditions in the study area are still well preserved. However, further management and conservation efforts are required to ensure the sustainability of dragonfly habitats. This study provides one of the first habitat-based assessments of dragonfly diversity in Karimunjawa and contributes baseline information on species composition, habitat associations, and their potential use as bioindicators of aquatic ecosystem quality.
