Abstract

Welding the joints of pipes is often required for maintenance and repairs in industrial applications, where pipes are frequently used. A prototype of an orbital pipe welding machine was constructed, and its design, analysis, and construction were carried out. The goal of this endeavor was to improve the quality of the welding process as well as overall productivity. The design study was carried out with the assistance of the SolidWorks program, which allowed for the determination of the stress, strain, displacement, and factor of safety imposed on the gear section throughout the welding and pipe installation process. During pipe installation, the gear section experiences maximum stresses of 3.920e+12 MPa, 5.029e+05 MPa, and 2.239e+06 MPa, respectively. These stresses are a result of the pipe being installed. When the pipe is installed, the highest strain in the gear section is 1.802e+01%, 3.030e-06%, and 8.439e-06%, respectively. This strain happens when the pipe is installed. In addition, the maximum displacement in the gear section is 3.074e+09 mm, 3.215e+04 mm, and 6.312e-03 mm, respectively, when the pipe is mounted and the pipe is installed. With a value of 1.5, the analysis results demonstrated that the maximum stresses, strains, and displacements in the gear section during the welding process are sufficient to fulfill the requirements for the critical safety factor. This demonstrates that the orbital pipe welding equipment may be utilized to generate welds of superior quality while simultaneously enhancing both productivity and efficiency through its utilization.

Abstract

The efficiency of fuel consumption in motorcycles is determined by multiple factors, such as the type of oil and fuel utilized. The careful choice of these two elements is essential for enhancing engine performance and reducing operational expenses. This study examines the impact of various oil and fuel types on the fuel consumption of the Honda Vario 125 cc ESP FI motorcycle, with particular attention to the relationship between engine oil viscosity and fuel quality. The study involved conducting experiments with a range of engine oil combinations, specifically 10W-30 and 20W-40, alongside different fuels like Pertalite and Pertamax, each exhibiting distinct octane ratings and combustion properties. The methodology included systematic and thorough testing in controlled environments, where factors like distance and load were standardized to guarantee precision and consistency. The results indicated clear variations in fuel efficiency among the tested combinations. The application of 10W-30 oil in conjunction with Pertalite fuel resulted in a 0.76% enhancement in efficiency when compared to the use of 20W-40 oil with the same fuel type. In a comparable analysis, 10W-30 oil demonstrated a 3.87% increase in efficiency over 20W-40 oil when used with Pertamax fuel. In the analysis of fuel types, Pertamax demonstrated a 16% increase in efficiency compared to Pertalite when used with 10W-30 oil, and a 12.52% increase in efficiency with 20W-40 oil. The results highlight the benefits associated with the utilization of high-quality, low-viscosity oils and higher-octane fuels in achieving improved fuel economy. In summary, the most effective combination for achieving fuel efficiency and cost savings is the use of 10W-30 oil alongside Pertamax fuel. This pairing is advised for Honda Vario 125 cc ESP FI users aiming for improved performance and lower fuel costs.

Abstract

Special service tools are essential in maintenance and repair processes, aiming to facilitate work. One of the primary maintenance and repair areas in vehicles is the braking system, which requires specialized tools. This study designed and developed a tool to assist with the maintenance and repair of the vehicle brake system. The objectives of this study were to create a sliding calliper extractor for front brakes and to evaluate its performance. The second step involved creating an illustration of the new method and designing the tool. Load testing and design analysis were conducted before production. Design evaluation was necessary before entering the manufacturing stage, and finally, performance testing and evaluation data were collected to ensure conformity with the initial design. The steps resulted in a sliding calliper tool with dimensions of 120 mm x 65 mm x 35 mm, a weight of 0.742 kg, and tensile strength of up to 650 N/65 kg. Testing on the front brake calliper of a Suzuki vehicle demonstrated the tool’s effectiveness in removing calliper pins at a load limit of 650 N. Performance tests confirmed the tool’s functionality and alignment with the initial design. The extractor successfully removed pins with an average load of 500 N/50 kg. The tool was simple and user-friendly, with testing showing no deflection, and no scratches or damage were observed on components around the pin during pin extraction. This result was supported by simulation analysis, where the equivalent stress under a 489 N/49 kg limit load was 47.043 MPa.

Abstract

Efficiency in the vehicle maintenance process is a major concern considering that it can have an impact on saving time, improving accuracy and minimizing operational costs. The use of innovative tools is expected to increase efficiency in the vehicle maintenance process. The current manual lubricant filling process proves to be time-consuming, requires extra labor, and is prone to inconsistency, which can lead to bearing damage. This research focuses on the design and manufacture of a lubricant filling tool for wheel hub bearings on Hino Series vehicles, which aims to improve maintenance efficiency at Hino Mitra Pratama Mobilindo Solo. The tool is designed using the ADDIE model, which includes needs analysis, design, development, and testing stages. The tool consists of a frame, arm holder, lubricator housing, and pressure plate, all of which are designed to ensure proper lubrication and minimize contamination. Tests show that the tool significantly reduces lubricant filling time, with a 418% increase in efficiency compared to the manual method. It also delivers more consistent results, improving work efficiency and productivity.

Abstract

The aims of the improvements made in the spare part room at PT. Wahana Sun Solo were to: (1) organize the spare parts storage area based on specifications; and (2) increase effectiveness and work efficiency in locating spare parts while creating a work area that adheres to the 5S method standards set by Nissan Motor Indonesia (NMI). The improvements in the spare part room were implemented through several processes: identifying the spare part room layout, redesigning the storage system using a class-based method, updating labels, and designing the improvement of the 5S method. Testing was conducted by performing a time study and a partman movement study focused on locating three sample spare parts: brake pads, air filters, and fan belts. An assessment index was conducted using an evaluation sheet after the improvements were made. The class-based storage method improvement created a more organized arrangement of spare parts according to types. Updates to labeling and enhancements to the 5S method significantly improved the partman's effectiveness and efficiency. Testing demonstrated that the time required to locate brake pad samples resulted in an efficiency increase of 144%, improvement of 218% for air filters, and improvement of 182% for fan belts. Observations showed that, on average, the partman's search required 5 fewer steps for brake pads, 7 fewer steps for air filters, and 5 fewer steps for fan belts compared to the pre-improvement process. In addition, the observation on the movements involved in locating spare parts resulted in reduced movements by at least two movements. The assessment sheet completed after the improvement yielded an assessment index of 91.2%.
