Abstract

Local traditions often contain inherited prohibitions that carry cultural and spiritual meanings. One such tradition in Babatan Village, Diwek Subdistrict, Jombang Regency, is the prohibition against striking the gong during ceremonial events. This study aims to explore the ongoing existence and public perception of this prohibition in the context of increasing global influence. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, the researcher conducted observations and interviews with local residents across generations. The findings reveal that older community members still hold strongly to the belief that the gong should not be struck, associating it with ancestral respect and mystical consequences. In contrast, younger generations tend to interpret the rule more rationally, yet continue to honor it as part of cultural heritage. These results indicate that local customs have not been completely eroded by modernity, but instead are undergoing a negotiation of meaning as society evolves.

Abstract

The Kirab Pusaka tradition in Trenggalek Regency is an annual event rich in symbolism and local cultural values, yet it remains underexplored as an educational medium for younger generations. This study aims to reveal the symbolic meanings of heirloom objects and ceremonial elements, and to analyze the role of symbols in shaping cultural identity and youth character. A descriptive qualitative method was employed, using observation, interviews, and documentation for data collection. The findings indicate that symbols in the procession function not only as cultural artifacts but also as tools for internalizing noble values such as responsibility, togetherness, and pride in local identity. These symbols play a strategic role in sustaining cultural continuity and building character through tradition-based educational approaches.

Abstract

The culinary traditions of Tajin Sora and Sappar in Probolinggo are a cultural heritage rich in symbolic, spiritual, and social values. These traditions are often viewed as mere annual rituals without deep meaning, yet they contain philosophies that represent local cultural identity. This study aims to uncover the symbolic, philosophical, and historical meanings of Tajin Sora and Sappar as cultural expressions of the Probolinggo community. The method used is descriptive qualitative with data collection techniques such as observation, interviews, and literature studies, and uses approaches from literary gastronomy and food semiotics. The results show that each element of the food, such as color, ingredients, and shape, symbolizes the values of life, purity, fertility, and hope. White porridge symbolizes purity, Candil porridge symbolizes the seeds of life, while coconut milk and pandan leaves represent harmony and protection. In addition to symbolic values, these traditions also contain social values of togetherness and solidarity. The conclusion of this study shows that Tajin Sora and Sappar are not only part of culinary practices but also serve as a medium for inheriting cultural values that are important to preserve amidst the challenges of modernization.
