Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of preventive exercises using a flywheel on improving eccentric muscle strength and flexibility of the hamstrings in football players. The researcher employed an experimental approach with a two-group design—an experimental group and a control group—using pre- and post-tests, as this was appropriate to the nature of the research problem and its objectives. The study sample consisted of 20 advanced footballers, who were randomly divided into two equal groups: 10 players in the experimental group and 10 in the control group. The experimental group undertook a preventive programme using a flywheel device for 12 weeks, comprising three training sessions per week, totalling 36 training sessions, with each session lasting 20 minutes. The loads were progressively increased from the structural adaptation and safety phase, through the eccentric strength development phase, to the phase of eccentric overload and speed. The researcher used the Nordic Drop test to assess eccentric strength of the hamstrings and the active straight leg raise (ASLR) test to assess flexibility of the hamstrings. The results presented in the study showed an improvement in eccentric strength in the experimental group from (42.30 ± 2.15) to (61.80 ± 1.90), representing an improvement of (46.10 per cent), whilst the improvement in the control group was (5.48 per cent). Flexibility of the hamstrings in the experimental group also improved from (64.50 ± 3.10) to (78.90 ± 2.20), representing an improvement of (22.32 per cent), compared with (3.37 per cent) for the control group. The results indicate that the proposed preventive programme using the flywheel device was more effective in developing eccentric strength and flexibility of the hamstrings compared with the conventional programme, within the limits of the study design and the data used.

Abstract

This study examined the effectiveness of virtual reality-based training to enhance selected basic skills short-serve accuracy, straight forehand accuracy, straight backhand accuracy, and alternating forehand-backhand of table tennis players. An experimental pre-test-post-test design with two equivalent groups was used. The sample for the application of the model consisted of 20 junior players aged between 14–16 years. The players were randomly assigned to the experimental group comprising ten players trained in the immersive virtual reality environment while the control group comprised ten players who underwent conventional training. The programmed took place over eight weeks, with three sessions a week. Following the validation and reliability assessment of the tests, the serve accuracy, forehand accuracy, backhand accuracy and continuous alternating strokes tests were performed. Using multiple analyses, the sampled data were analyzed. The analyses include means, standard deviations, t-tests, and effect sizes. Findings from the model indicated statistically significant differences pre–post in all skills for the experimental group and a significant post-test advantage for the experimental group over the control group. The experimental group improved by 35.5% for the serve, 35.2% for the forehand, 37.1% for the backhand and 32.0% for alternating strokes, with large effect sizes. This may be explained by frequent repetitions, immediate feedback, control of ball speed and direction, and the motivation of players being enhanced in the virtual environment. The overall conclusion of the study is that virtual reality, while a useful aid, is not a replacement for practicing in person. It is advised to start using it in junior table tennis programmed gradually, keeping safety and individual differences in mind.

Abstract

This study aims to help coaches and researchers measure level of defensive performance among players. The researcher used a descriptive approach, test was administered to a sample of 20 junior players from Al-Taawon Sports Club, representing a single group, test included four main criteria: ability to block shots, ball possession, anticipation and response, and defensive positioning. A specific scoring system was used to classify performance into excellent, good, average, and weak defense. The test was designed to allow for an objective and scientific evaluation of  players, enabling coaches to identify each player's strengths and weaknesses, thus contributing to systematic and organized improvement of defensive performance. Results showed that test is a practical and effective tool for developing players' defensive skills and motor abilities, enhancing their ability to participate effectively in matches and training. It can also be used to plan future training sessions according to individual needs of each player, contributing to raising overall level of team. The findings indicate that the majority of players fall into the “very good” and “good” performance categories, with the highest average score achieved in the areas of blocking and defensive positioning (4.0), while the area of anticipation and response had the lowest average score (3.8).
