Abstract

Instagram has become a major tool in shaping tourism representation and constructing cultural identity. This research analyzes how the Tomb of the Mataram Kings in Yogyakarta is represented on Instagram @kratonjogja and its impact on tourists' interpretations. Using a critical phenomenology approach, the study argues that Instagram is not merely a promotional platform but also an instrument of symbolic domination that aestheticizes and commodifies cultural heritage. Through digital content analysis, in-depth interviews, and participatory observation, this study reveals that tourists' experiences are increasingly mediated by digital expectations, diluting the historical and spiritual significance of the sites. Consequently, this study underscores the necessity for a critically informed tourism management strategy to mitigate the symbolic dominance of digital platforms while safeguarding the historical-spiritual integrity of cultural sites within contemporary tourism promotion dynamics.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the empowerment of Battalion Commander (Danyon) leadership in enhancing soldier professionalism to face contemporary challenges. These challenges include the development of military technology, non-conventional threats such as hybrid warfare and cyberattacks, as well as rapidly changing geopolitical dynamics. The study examines how Danyon applies transformational leadership to shape soldiers who are resilient, adaptive, and equipped with both technical and moral competencies. Through a qualitative research method with a case study approach, this research collects data from in-depth interviews with Danyon and soldiers, field observations, and document analysis related to training and unit operations. The findings show that effective Danyon leadership can significantly improve soldiers' motivation, discipline, and capability to face modern challenges. Moreover, mental development and soldier welfare are crucial factors in supporting unit combat readiness. The discussion also highlights the essential role of technological adaptation and resource management in maintaining professionalism and operational effectiveness within the unit.

Abstract

This article explores how factors such as race, religion, and political power influence the classification of violent acts as “terrorism,” focusing on two mass shootings in the United States: the 2016 Pulse Nightclub attack by Omar Mateen and the 2018 Tree of Life Synagogue attack by Robert Bowers. Using a qualitative comparative case study, the research reveals how the application of the terrorism label often depends on the perpetrator’s identity. Despite both attackers having clear ideological motives, Mateen a Muslim of colorwas swiftly labeled a terrorist, while Bowers a white man driven by white supremacist beliefs was more often described in terms of hate crime or mental health issues. The study highlights that the term “terrorism” functions less as an objective legal definition and more as a social and political construct shaped by racial and religious biases. By analyzing narratives, media portrayals, and policy responses, the article shows that these labeling practices significantly impact security strategies, shape public opinion, and contribute to the marginalization of minority groups. Ultimately, the article argues for a more neutral and consistent approach to defining and addressing ideological violence, emphasizing the need to critically examine how power dynamics shape discourse around domestic extremism.

Abstract

Agrarian conflict remains a structural problem in Indonesia and has the potential to become a social threat at the local level. In West Java, land disputes often involve local communities and PT Perkebunan Nusantara (PTPN) as large-scale managers, mainly due to overlapping land ownership claims between official rights and de facto control by the community. This study aims to analyze the dynamics of agrarian conflicts between communities and PTPN as a potential social vulnerability in the region using the perspectives of regional vigilance and conflict management. This study applies a qualitative descriptive method through literature review and document analysis. Agrarian conflicts between communities and PTPN often develop into latent conflicts characterized by increasing community dissatisfaction. The socio-economic dependence of communities on land intensifies the conflict and broadens its impact to the social sphere, thereby increasing the potential for regional social vulnerability. These findings confirm that agrarian conflicts can be understood as a potential social vulnerability that can be identified early on.

Abstract

This study examines the phenomenon of artificial intelligence (AI)–driven disinformation and its implications for public trust within the context of Indonesia’s digital democracy. The research focuses on a deepfake video depicting a figure resembling the Indonesian Minister of Finance, Sri Mulyani Indrawati, falsely stating that “honorary teachers are a burden to the state.” This study employs a qualitative research design using Norman Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) framework, which encompasses three levels of analysis: textual analysis, discursive practice, and social practice. The findings reveal that AI technologies are utilized to manipulate meaning through the strategic use of language and visual representation, further amplified by social media algorithms that prioritize emotionally engaging content. Such dynamics accelerate the circulation of disinformation and shape public perception in the digital public sphere. Consequently, the phenomenon contributes to a crisis of public trust (trust deficit) and undermines the legitimacy of digital democracy. By integrating the theoretical perspectives of Information Disorder and Digital Democracy, this study argues that AI-based disinformation should not be understood solely as a technological issue, but also as an ethical and informational justice problem with broader implications for the quality of democracy in the digital age.
