Abstract

Mud crab (Scylla spp.) is one of the coastal fisheries resources that has important economic value. Along with the increasing market demand for mud crabs, the development of mud crab aquaculture is widely practiced in various coastal areas in Indonesia. The availability of local resource-based feed is one of the key factors for the efficiency of aquaculture efforts and the sustainability of mangrove crab aquaculture production in the region. This study aimed to examine the effect of a combination of unripe papaya fruit and fish flesh (Decapterus sp.) with different ratios on the growth of young mud crab cultured using the floating raft method in the Tuhaha Bay waters, Tuhaha Village, East Saparua District. A total of 12 mud crab were fed a mixture of papaya and fish at 10% per total body weight per day. Treatment A (5% papaya: 5% fish flesh) and treatment B (7.5% papaya: 2.5% fish flesh) were given to six individual mud crabs each. Weight measurements were taken weekly during the one-month study period. The results showed that young mud crab fed treatment B tended to have higher absolute weight growth rate and specific growth rate compared to juvenile mud crab fed treatment A but were not statistically significantly different. This finding explains that the composition of 25%-50% unripe papaya fruit combined with fish flesh (Decapterus sp.) effectively increases the growth rate of the mud crabs.

Abstract

To optimise the production of microalgae culture, manipulation of media culture composition is one of the efforts. This study aimed to compare the growth of microalgae Pavlova sp. and the environmental culture conditions between different media compositions. Pavlova sp. was cultured for nine days using three different media compositions: A, B, and C. Cell density was counted daily. The concentration of ammonia, nitrate, and phosphate, as well as total Vibrio and total bacteria, were measured during the culture period on the 3rd, 6th, and 9th day. The result showed that the highest cell density was found in C media (5,08 x 106 cells/ml) followed by B media (4,58 x 106 cells/ml) and A media (4,46 x 106 cells/ml), but statistically, there was not significantly different growth rate between those media (P=0.83 >0.05). Phosphate and nitrate concentrations decreased in all media, but ammonia increased. The total count of bacteria and Vibrio sp. on C media was lower than on A and B media. This finding indicated that the composition of C media was more suitable for the growth and culture environmental condition of Pavlova sp. culture at a semi-massal scale.

Abstract

Control of gonad maturation and spawning is a major problem in the development of shrimp and lobster cultivation. Reproductive technology in hatching this type of crustacean has not experienced significant development. Progesterone is a precursor of estrogen in vertebrates, which is also found in crustaceans and other invertebrates. While several crustacean reproductive hormones have been characterized, the identity and function of other reproductive hormones are still under investigation. In hormone analysis, the use of the Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) method continues to grow, both for research purposes and clinical applications. This study aims to evaluate the concentration of the hormone progesterone in Panulirus versicolor lobsters of different sizes with a body weight range of 300-750g which are caught in the wild using the ELISA method. The hormone progesterone is measured in the ovaries, hepatopancreas and hemolymph. This research uses descriptive analysis methods. From using the ELISA method, the results of the parallelism test showed that the test sample curve was parallel to the standard curve. Absorbance and standard value recovery tests showed that the measured concentrations of the progesterone hormone in Panulirus versicolor lobsters were acceptable because they had an average recovery value of 98%. The precision testing results of the ELISA kit used show that the test prescription is good and acceptable based on the percentage of coefficient variation (%CV) from QC1 and QC 2 (<15%). The concentration value of the progesterone hormone in P. versicolor lobsters shows that there is a difference in concentration depending on body size, where in lobsters with a body weight of 650-750g, the concentration of the progesterone hormone in the hepatopancreas, ovaries and hemolin is 1.059 ng/ml, 0.357 ng/ml and 0.042 ng/ml. while at lower body weights, namely 300-350 grams, the concentration of the hormone progesterone is 0.753 ng/ml, 0.181 ng/ml, 0.010 ng/ml.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to determine the strategy for developing seaweed cultivation businesses in Warialau village, North Aru sub-district, Aru Islands district. To evaluate the sustainability status of seaweed, it is necessary to review the ecological, economic, technological, social and institutional dimensions. This research uses two types of data collection methods, namely primary and secondary data. The results of the ecological dimension analysis show that the physical and chemical water data is in the normal range, the economic dimension shows that the average income of the community is not proportional to the expenditure from seaweed cultivation activities, namely IDR 1,825,000 from capital of IDR 2,800,000. The technology used is relatively simple, both for the seeds used and post-harvest handling. Measurement of the social dimension shows that the majority of the community is at senior high school level 57.1%, followed by junior high school 22.9%, elementary school 14.3% and undergraduate 5.7%. The cultivation system is carried out individually because there is no official institution regarding seaweed development in the future. SWOT and AHP Rapfish were used to test the sustainability of seaweed cultivation businesses in Warialau Village. The Rapfish test results show a 60.5% chance of sustaining cultivation in a good direction, the biggest threat is 40% from pests and diseases. The SWOT test results show total strengths of 1.13 and weaknesses of 11.35.

Abstract

Aru Islands Regency, especially in Sir-Sir Sub-district, there are several villages that are famous for their high potential seaweed resources, one of which is Leiting village. Eucheuma cottonii seaweed cultivation activities had stopped due to disease attacks. At present, the community of Leiting village wants to activate seaweed cultivation activities again, therefore it is necessary to assess the condition of the waters. This study aims to determine the physical-chemical parameters of the waters and analyse the suitability of these physical-chemical parameters for E. cottonii seaweed cultivation. Collection of data directly in the field includes physical-chemical parameters of the waters. Determination of the suitability of parameters for seaweed cultivation in the longline refers to Sirajudin (2009). The level of suitability was determined based on the suitability of physical-chemical parameters of waters for fish farming (Tiskiantoro, 2006). The study results show that the physical parameters of the waters include temperature range (27.20-28.07°C), salinity (28.99-29.61 ppt), brightness (2-4 metres), depth 2-4 metres, and the current strength 0.03-0.32 m/sec. While the range of water chemistry values includes pH (7.65-8.11), DO (6.85-9.52 mg/l), nitrate (0.131-0.153 mg/litre), phosphate (0.04-0.05 mg/litre), and Chlorophyll-a (0.72-3.61 mg/litre). The physico-chemical conditions in the waters of Leiting Village are still within the range of the quality standards for the development of seaweed cultivation. The results of the calculation of the suitability of waters in Leiting village found three consecutive suitability categories, which are very suitable (S1) of 12.24 hectares; conditionally suitable (S2) of 72.81 hectares and unsuitable (S3) of 11.98 hectares. So it can be concluded that seaweed cultivation activities are very feasible in the S1 area with a carrying capacity of 61 units and a capacity of 364 units are feasible in the S2 area.

Abstract

Biofloc is one of the advances in fish farming technology with the main principle of recycling nutrients into the culture system. Biofloc application has been widely used in freshwater aquaculture systems, but in seawater aquaculture systems it is still very limited. This study evaluated the application of bioflocs with different bacterial sources, EM4_Fishery and Nitrobac, on the growth and survival of White Snapper (Lates calcalifer) and the water quality of the aquaculture environment. This study used a completely randomised design (CRD) with three replications. A total of 19 White Snapper fish with an average weight of 6.86±0.17 g/L were put into each 14-day-old biofloc and control. Feeding was 2% of total body weight with a frequency of once a day (09.00 am). The results showed that during the experimental period, the weight of White Snapper fish decreased variably in both treatments and controls. The survival rate of White Snapper fish in the Nitrobac bacteria treatment tended to be higher than in the EM4_Fishery bacteria, but both were lower than the control with a tendency for large fish to survive longer than small fish. Concentrations of ammonia, nitrite and nitrate in the treatments at the beginning of the experiment were higher than the control but tended to decrease with the length of rearing. DO values tended to increase in the treatments compared to the control, while DO values tended to increase in the treatments compared to the control. These findings revealed that the Nitrobac as a source of biofloc bacteria in marine White Snapper culture is more effective than EM4_Fisheries, but requiring further experiments with some concern on individual fish size greater than 7 g and the biofloc older than two weeks is recommended.

Abstract

The ornamental fish in the aquaculture business is growing over time and continuing to be a promised sector. To ensure success, the presence of natural feed is crucial for the larvae stage. Tubifex has a high protein content and can provide all the nutrition fish larvae need. This study aims to rear tubifex in mud media and fed by swallow feces in four doses: 50 grams, 100 grams, and 150 grams, respectively, and without feces as a control. Results show that giving 150 grams of swallow feces increases the growth and abundance of tubifex in about 1174.33 individuals in 30 days. Water quality parameters such as temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), and ammonia support the survival of tubifex.
