Abstract

Abstract

Sea cucumber is one of commercially important species that commonly traded. The high nutrition and its benefit in pharmacologic sector render the high price of sea cucumber, hence, the organism becomes over-exploitated. The price of sea cucumber are depended on the species. At least, there are more than 50 species of sea cucumber that being exploited to trade. The aim of the study was to inventory and calculate the potency of commercial sea cucumber in seagrass ecosystem at Suli Waters, Central Maluku. The study was conducted from September to October 2017. The sampling was using line transect method, while the species of sea cucumber were microscopically identified based on ossicles shape. The result showed that 14 species of sea cucumber were found, that classified into 3 family and 5 genera. Among the 14 species, 11 species were recognized as commercially important species. The 11 species and their potency were spesified as following: Actinopyga echinites (481 individuals), A. lecanora (481 individuals), A. miliaris (801 individuals), Bohadschia marmorata (2.082 individuals), B. vitiensis (1.121 individuals), Holothuria atra (374 individuals), H. coluber (427 individuals), H. lesson (908 individuals), H. scabra (4.164 individu), Stichopus chloronotus (53 individuals), and S. horrens (267 individuals). The utilization of sea cucumber was considered low. People utilized them traditionally, yet, not continously.

Abstract

Sandfish cultivation is a meaningful way that is necessary to fulfil the production, and learning the processing aspect is also crucial to achieve a better price in selling. Suli, a coastal area, has a high potency of sandfish that needs management; however, the knowledge and skill of Suli’s people are still low regarding sandfish culture and processing. The community service program was conducted through the socialization of cultivation concept, training of sandfish processing technique, and evaluation to measure the program’s effectiveness in enhancing people’s knowledge and skill. The evaluation results indicate an increase in knowledge and skills, both for the concept of cultivation and processing techniques. The percentage of target recognition for the organisms is relatively high (83.33%), as sandfish is generally found in Suli intertidal, yet, the common name and scientific name of sandfish are not cognizant. The low percentage is more related to cultivation (12.50-16.67%) due to marine culture being infrequent in Suli waters, whereas the processing has a higher percentage (41.67%). The knowledge and skill of people are increasing after the program. Furthermore, the support of the local government is needed to stimulate the youth in the cultivation and processing business of sandfish so that the level of unemployment will decrease

Abstract

The characteristics of water quality play a role in choosing the ideal site for seaweed farming. Additionally, by using the proper cultivation techniques and methodologies, seaweed cultivation activities might be effective. Seaweed farming is often thought of as a relatively easy endeavor that can be done in any body of water. But seaweed requires several requirements. The study of water conditions in Rutong country is important in determining the location and the method should be appropriate and usable. The purpose of the activity is to provide knowledge and skills to the community on how to measure water quality parameters then for the initial development of seaweed cultivation businesses can offer seaweed cultivation methods.  This activity was carried out for 1 month in May 2022 in the village of Rutong with the involvement of the start-up team. There were nine participants. Participatory active method. Communities are actively involved in observation, sampling and discussion. The result is that the salinity value of the surface water in Rutong only reaches 28 ppt on average. This is strongly suspected to be due to the supply of fresh water through the river. While temperature and brightness are suitable for aquaculture activities. The solution was to shift aquaculture activities more towards the sea. Water temperature can be supportive for seaweed cultivation in Rutong country because seaweed can live in water temperatures of 27-28℃. Aquaculture activities can use the floating method with a type of longline -raft combination so that it can float in the water column. The conclusion was that the community was actively involved and skilled in seawater sampling,  measuring water quality can determine cultivation methods and cooperate in the design of rearing containers.

Abstract

The black sea cucumber Holothuria atra was used in integrated aquaculture with sea bass juveniles (Lates calcarifer) as the lowest and highest trophic level organism, alongside the seaweed Gracilaria sp. as an organic extractive organism. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the potential of integrated aquaculture combined with sea bass juvenile and seaweed to support the growth of the black sea cucumber. The experiment was carried out using a completely randomized design with 3 fish density treatments (50, 100, and 150 fish/m3), each integrated with 10 bags of seaweed and 4 individual black sea cucumbers. The study was conducted for 8 weeks and the fish were fed with trash fish at 10% of body weight. Water quality parameters were measured in situ every day except for TOM, ammonia, and nitrate which were measured at the beginning, middle, and end of the study. The results showed that the specific growth rate of the black sea cucumber ranged from 0.31-0.45%/day. The black sea cucumber was able to use the feed and metabolic waste produced by the culture of sea bass, showing the highest growth rate at a density of 100 fish/m3. Water quality parameters remained in ranges considered suitable for growth, except salinity. Furthermore, the black sea cucumber was found to have a strategy for adapting to fluctuations in salinity, as shown by the ability to survive at 15 ppt. Keywords:Sea bass juvenilesSeaweedSalinityTOM

Abstract

Sandfish is one of the organisms from Holothuroidea class and Echinoderms phylum. Sandfish can be found throughout coastal waters, from shallow tidal areas to deeper waters. Sandfish prefer waters free from pollutants, and the water movement is relatively calm. To mimic its preference different recirculation aquaculture systems were designed. The recirculation systems consisted of a double bottom filter or a multi-layer filter/filter component that were located inside or outside the system. This research aimed to determine the effects of different recirculation systems on ammonia concentration, behavior and survival of sandfish with the substrates that were replaced every week during the study. The results showed that the different recirculation systems in the three maintenance containers were the best systems in reducing ammonia concentrations and the best survival rates were found in the inner recirculation system and the outer recirculation system. Abstract

ABSTRACT  The use of intensive aquaculture systems is one of the activities that provide an overview of aquaculture to increase production due to the high stocking density of fish but has an impact on the contribution of waste from fish farming. Overcoming existing problems with the application of the Integrated Multi Trophic Aquaculture system cultivation model, this system is expected to help reduce cultivation waste. The purpose of this study is to determine how the IMTA system can help reduce organic waste in the aquatic environment so that water quality can be maintained and suitable for the life of organisms. This research was conducted from June to July 2023, at the Center for the Study and Development of Regional Excellence and Empowerment of Coastal Communities. The method used was descriptive quantitative. The results of the TOM analysis value in all treatments decreased. in treatment A 21.1 mg/l, B 41.0 mg/l and C 34.7 mg/l.  TSS decreased differently every time, especially on day 42 for treatment A 0.031 mg/l, B 0.023 mg/l and C 0.178 mg/l.  Ammonia for day 42 also decreased, namely in treatment A 0.03 mg/l, B 0.20 mg/l, C 0.13 mg/l. On day 42 nitrate for treatment A 0.03 mg/l, B 0.06 mg/l, C 0.08 mg/l. Water quality parameters for temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen and acidity had reasonable values for all biota reared. Conclusion The IMTA system can help reduce organic waste of TOM, TSS, ammonia and nitrate, in addition, it can also reduce the amount of organic waste
