Abstract

Mathematical comprehension ability can be achieved well if students really understand the concept. This study aims to determine the mathematical comprehension ability of junior high school students in North Pontianak District on the Pythagorean theorem material. The method used in this research is qualitative with descriptive data analysis. This research used 3 students of class VIII of SMP Negeri 15 as subjects, namely 2 females and 1 male. The data collection technique in this study was carried out using a test in the form of essay questions and accompanied by questions and answers to the research subjects. Based on the results and discussion of the study, the mathematical comprehension ability of students in understanding problems, planning solutions, and re-checking all the steps that have been done is classified as moderate, with a percentage of 75%. The mathematical comprehension ability and the quality of improving the mathematical comprehension ability of students whose learning is applied are better and students have a more positive attitude towards the learning, making this learning an alternative learning that teachers can apply

Abstract

This study investigates the difficulties encountered by Grade VII students in solving mathematical problems involving algebraic operations. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through problem-solving tests and semi-structured interviews. Students' responses were analyzed and classified into three levels of problem-solving ability: high, moderate, and low. One student was selected from each category for in-depth analysis. The findings reveal that the high-ability student demonstrated a complete understanding of the problem-solving process, including problem interpretation, planning, execution, and review. The moderate-ability student showed partial mastery, with challenges in executing and reviewing the solution plan. Meanwhile, the low-ability student struggled at every stage due to limited conceptual understanding and procedural knowledge. This study highlights the necessity of tailored instructional strategies that address students’ varying levels of mathematical proficiency and foster deeper comprehension in algebraic thinking.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effectiveness of the Computer Assisted Instruction (CAI) learning model supported by GeoGebra in improving students' mathematical representation ability. The research was conducted at SMP Negeri 2 Kuningan with two eighth-grade classes as the sample. The experimental class received instruction using the CAI model with GeoGebra, while the control class was taught using a conventional model. The research design employed a quasi-experimental method with a non-equivalent pretest-posttest control group. Prior to the intervention, a validation test was conducted on eight essay items through four analyses: validity, reliability, item difficulty, and discrimination index. Data collection involved pretests, six instructional sessions, posttests, and a student response questionnaire. The Mann–Whitney U test was used for hypothesis testing. The results indicated no significant difference in pretest scores between the groups. However, posttest results and N-Gain analysis showed significant improvement in the experimental class. The average response percentage was 83%, categorized as very positive. These findings suggest that the CAI model supported by GeoGebra is effective in enhancing students’ symbolic, visual, and verbal mathematical representation skills, as well as fostering positive student attitudes toward mathematics learning.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the critical thinking skills of seventh-grade students in solving word problems involving triangle concepts. Employing a qualitative descriptive method, the research was conducted at SMP Negeri 3 Sukadana with three students representing high, moderate, and low performance levels. Data were collected through essay-based test items and follow-up interviews, focusing on five indicators of critical thinking: elementary clarification, basic support, inference, advanced clarification, and strategies and tactics. The findings revealed that students experienced difficulties across all indicators, particularly in integrating strategies and making valid conclusions. Average scores for each indicator demonstrated that students’ critical thinking skills remain at a developing level. This suggests the need for instructional interventions that explicitly foster reasoning, analysis, and reflective thinking. The study highlights the importance of contextual and open-ended problem-solving in developing students’ mathematical understanding and higher-order thinking skills.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze students’ conceptual understanding in probability based on their levels of mathematics anxiety through the implementation of the Missouri Mathematics Project (MMP) learning model. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed, involving six students from SMA IT At-Tadzkir who were selected using stratified purposive sampling based on low, moderate, and high levels of mathematics anxiety. Data were collected through anxiety questionnaires, mathematical concept understanding tests, and semi-structured interviews. The test instrument was developed using five indicators of conceptual understanding, including verbal restatement, classification, algorithmic application, representation, and conceptual connection. The findings indicate a strong relationship between mathematics anxiety and students’ conceptual understanding. Students with low anxiety levels demonstrated mastery across all five indicators, showing confidence and logical reasoning in their responses. Those with moderate anxiety showed partial mastery, often hesitating when confronted with complex tasks. In contrast, students with high anxiety levels struggled with most indicators and displayed signs of emotional discomfort during the interview process. These results suggest that mathematics anxiety significantly impacts students' ability to comprehend mathematical concepts, and that the MMP model, while effective, requires additional affective support to optimize learning outcomes.
