The Journal of Feminism and Gender Studies (JFGS) main objectives are to develop scientific discourse and analysis on issues of gender and feminism. JFGF accommodates articles with both empirical and discursive approaches by providing freedom of scientific development within the framework of feminism and gender perspectives. Articles with empirical and interdisciplinary approaches to the study of feminism and gender are preferable. In keeping with its commitment to distribute and disseminate information on issues of feminism and gender worldwide, as part of the advocacy efforts undertaken by the University of Jember, JFGS provides free and open access to all of his published works. This journal aims to become a forum for dialogue between academics, experts, practitioners, and feminist activists around the world. It also builds and creates new knowledge in favor of justice and equality in a humanitarian framework so that JFGS will later become a platform for discussion and debate as we also accept the plurality of thoughts.

Abstract

This article examines how Entrok, a novel by Okky Madasari, portrays the oppressive realities of polygamy and patriarchal domination within Indonesia’s socio-political landscape, especially during the New Order regime. Using feminist literary criticism as the main theoretical framework, supported by a Marxist view on economic power, this study explores how literature critically reflects women’s lived experiences under systemic gender inequality. While previous studies have discussed gender bias and resistance in Entrok, few have examined polygamy as a tool of patriarchy or analysed how resistance strategies vary across women’s social and educational positions. The analysis reveals a clear contrast in how female characters respond to polygamy and patriarchal structures. Yu Yem, Yu Parti, Endang Sulastri, and Marni, who represent uneducated women, not only reject and do not tolerate polygamy but also actively resist it by building economic independence, thus asserting their agency and autonomy. Their refusal becomes a form of open defiance against patriarchal expectations. Conversely, Rahayu, an educated woman, accepts her position as a second wife under religious justification, internalising patriarchal norms despite experiencing profound psychological distress. These representations demonstrate how both class and ideology influence women's capacity and methods of resistance to gendered oppression. Framing Entrok within broader feminist and socio-political discourse, this study affirms the novel’s role as a critique of patriarchal injustice. It underscores how fiction can challenge ideological violence and support Sustainable Development Goal 5 on Gender Equality by imagining alternative possibilities for empowerment and resistance.

Abstract

Beauty is a concept that is constructed and interpreted differently in every society. In performing arts, beauty becomes ani mportant part that influences the image of a dancer. This study aims to describe how dancers and the community interpret he beauty of lengger dancers in Wonosobo Regency. This study uses a qualitative method with a phenomenologicala pproach. Data were obtained through in-depth interviews, observation and documentation. The results of the study showt hat the meaning of beauty of lengger dancers from the community and lengger dancers themselves have differences. The community tends to interpret beauty visually, while dancers interpret it more broadly and specifically. Beauty will be more directed at inner beauty, flexibility in dancing, the ability to combine makeup and costumes and beauty through spirituala ctivities that are carried out. This meaning becomes a standard of beauty and develops in society. From this standard, a myth of beauty is constructed that becomes a control and is restrictive. The myth that develops makes lengger dancers manifest their beautiful appearance through the behavior they do. This is shown by lengger dancers such as taking care of themselves, honing their dance skills, using makeup according to developments and performing various special rituals.

Abstract

Cyber-sexual harassment is a form of online gender-based violence (GBV). Currently, it is increasingly prevalent on social media platforms, one of which is TikTok. The emergence of comments that contain sexual elements, objectification of the body. Many words whose meaning is shifted towards a negative direction whose purpose is to harass. This phenomenon indicates a shift in deviant behavior from real space to cyberspace, which demands a new theoretical approach in understanding the motivation of the perpetrator. This study aims to analyze the behavior of cyber sexual harassment perpetrators against female content creators on TikTok using Space Transition Theory (Karuppannan Jaishankar, 2008). This research uses a qualitative method with several data collection techniques, one of which is conducting in-depth interviews with perpetrators who admit to having made sexualized comments to female creators on TikTok. The data were analyzed by matching the field findings against the seven postulates in Space Transition Theory. The results show that the postulates in the theory appear in the behavior of the perpetrator, ranging from the release of behavior that is held back in the real world, the use of anonymity to avoid consequences, to the influence of virtual social norms that tend to tolerate acts of harassment. This phenomenon also shows the dynamic interaction between the real and virtual worlds, both in terms of behavior and social values. Space Transition Theory is relevant to explain the tendency of perpetrators to commit sexual harassment on social media, especially on platforms such as TikTok. This theory is an important foundation in understanding gender-based cybercrime from the perspective of perpetrator behavior.

Abstract

This study aims to uncover the symbolic meaning and power of tattoos on the bodies of Malacca women in East Nusa Tenggara during the Japanese occupation, from the perspective of Iris Marion Young. In the context of Japanese imperialism, tattoos on the bodies of Malacca women were not merely cultural expressions, but also symbolic media of resistance and expression of identity amidst the pressures of imperialist power and patriarchal control. Young’s approach to structural goals and objectives is applied to examine how women's bodies, through tattoos, become a means of maintaining identity and agency under a system that dominates and controls women. Using in-depth and historical interview methods, this study shows that tattoos play an important role in strengthening women’s resistance to the Japanese power structure. This is motivated by Japan’s actions in making women its sexual objects. This study provides a deeper understanding of how Malacca women use their bodies as a medium of resistance against gender injustice and social inequality.

Abstract

This study aims to explore femicide as the most extreme form of gender-based violence, focusing on the 2022 case of Wiwin Sunengsih in West Bandung Regency. The research emphasizes the need to understand femicide not merely as an individual criminal act, but as a systemic manifestation of patriarchal power that perpetuates fear, control, and the silencing of women. Using an empirical legal approach, this qualitative research employs a descriptive method to examine how law functions in society, particularly in the enforcement and institutional responses to femicide. A case approach is used to analyze the application of legal norms in practice, supported by in-depth interviews and participatory observation. Data were collected from purposively selected informants, including law enforcement officers and officials from a women's protection agency. The findings reveal that the femicide of Wiwin was the culmination of prolonged gender-based violence and power imbalances within an intimate relationship. The legal apparatus failed to provide preventive protection despite repeated threats reported by the victim's family. From a radical feminist perspective, this case reflects how women’s bodies and lives become battlegrounds for male control, legitimized by social norms. The study also demonstrates that the legal system's formal neutrality often disregards the vulnerability of women, highlighting the need for structural legal reform. Thus, femicide must be addressed through gender-sensitive and preventive legal frameworks that go beyond punitive responses.

Abstract

Women’s involvement in the political stage is still not optimal because they are objects of construction in a patriarchal culture. A construction of beauty is represented through the 2024 Election news media. This research aims to determine the extent to which the media constructs symbols of beauty for women running in the general election. This study uses qualitative methods. The samples from this research are four viral news stories about female legislative candidates from different online news media. By using the framing analysis of the Pan and Kosicki model from the theory of Zhongdang Pan and Gerald M. Kosicki, it was found that there is a construction of beauty that is someone who has a white appearance, no acne, light natural make-up, wears a hijab, has neat teeth, and has a beautiful smile. Beauty is then constructed as a reason for people to vote in elections, overriding attention and encouraging individuals to act on the initiative of first impressions.
