Abstract

This study focuses on the psychological symptoms experienced by the Mother in Pemintal Kegelapan (The Dark Spinner) by Intan Paramadhita. Hysteria is understood as a neurosis form based on an element of anxiety in the character’s past life. Psychological disorders in the short story can be seen from the dual personality of the Mother to avoid or cure the anxiety she suffers. As a psychological disorder, hysteria certainly has a therapy known as catharsis. That method is applied by the Mother as a treatment for her psychological disorders. The feminist reflection of Pemintal Kegelapan can be analyzed by applying Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalytic theory. Through that stage of analysis, it can be known how the Mother applies the cathartic method. The causes of the hysteria disorder experienced can be revealed, both hysteria as a mental illness and a woman’s disease.

Abstract

This study focuses on the same events that repeatedly appear in the main character's dreams. The contents of the dream are interpreted as instructions, so the main character carries out the instructions according to the contents of her dream and hopes it will come true. This study aims to discover how the manifest content and Al-Ru'ya appear as condensation of dreams in the short story Perempuan Patah Hati Yang Kembali Menemukan Cinta Melalui Mimpi by Eka Kurniawan. The method used in this study is qualitative, utilizing Sigmund Freud's dream interpretation theory. The data used are sentences that show the dream events experienced by the main character. The data analysis technique describes the condensation of dreams experienced by the main character. The study results show the condensation of dreams that first includes the manifest content, namely the repetition of dreams that appear clearly and are easy to remember due to the influence of physical products. The dream recurrence occurs due to a mental disorder characterized by hard feelings of trauma and sadness. Second, Al-Ru'ya, namely the belief in dreams that come true, such as finding a beach location on Pangandaran beach, meeting a handsome man and loving her, then becoming her future love, and the last is meeting the man's dog. Dreams come true because dreams are believed to be a realization of wishes, fulfil desires, perceptions and beliefs, and magical instructions.

Abstract

The child character after doing the murder is seen to have no guilt but looks satisfied, happy, and proud. This study aims to analyze the psychopathic behaviour of the child characters in a short story, Membuat Senang Seekor Gajah, by Eka Kurniawan. In the analysis, the researcher uses Sigmund Freud's psychoanalytic theory and the concept of psychopathy to discuss psychopathic problems in child characters. Researchers use a pragmatic approach to find the meaning of psychopath in a short story. The results of this study indicate that the child character experiences an imbalance of id and ego, so they experience personality disorders, namely psychopaths. Child characters with psychopathic personalities cannot feel remorse, sadness, and fear of the sadism committed against the Elephant and are manipulative. Furthermore, the child characters enjoy mutilating animals to achieve personal satisfaction. Then, based on a pragmatic approach, depicting psychopaths in children is a contemporary criticism that describes a child's personality disorder due to unequal physical and mental health control.

Abstract

Abstract

This study of the literary work Merasa Pintar, Bodoh Saja Tak Punya by Rusdi Mathari employs Michel Foucault’s theory of madness to analyze narrative data and identify the concept of madness within the epistémè of the village community where the main character, Cak Dlahom, resides. The main character gets different treatment from two groups of people he meets in his daily life. The first group is people who always need confirmation from Cak Dlahom. The second group consists of people who make a priori judgments, attribute the concept of madness to Cak Dlahom, treat him as a different person, and then laugh at and ignore him. However, Cak Dlahom managed to fight the social epistémè by creating a narrative that broke the stigma. This research successfully identifies the patterns and impacts of societal judgment on individuals who are perceived as different. Additionally, there is an image of an individual’s ability to resist the dominant view and shape their own narrative in society.

Abstract

This study examines how nine Indonesian online outlets transformed the 20 August 2025 Taman Flora–Bratang traffic accident in Surabaya into stabilised news narratives. Using Theo van Leeuwen’s socio-semiotic framework and a mixed-methods Critical Discourse Analysis, we ask: (1) how actors, actions, time–space, purposes, and legitimations are added or removed; (2) how victims, the car/driver, police, and “road/space” are portrayed (naming, genericisation, activation/passivation, inclusion/exclusion); and (3) which authorisation, moral evaluation, rationalisation, and mythopoesis assign responsibility under breaking-news uncertainty. A parallel, convergent analysis treated sentences (including headlines) as units across nine same-day reports. Quantitatively, we tracked inclusion/exclusion, activation/passivation, gender marking, and legitimation types per sentence; qualitatively, we traced outlet-level patterns via a CDA Matrix, joint displays (actor × legitimation), and a recontextualisation flow. Double-coding (Cohen’s κ template) audited heuristic labels, with discrepancies resolved interpretively. Three recurring narrative packages emerged: (i) a police-led “two-motor” template that simplifies causality and backgrounds the car/driver; (ii) a BPBD-led procedural timeline that individualises the driver yet defers legal judgment; and (iii) a defensive naming-then-denial pattern specifying the car (even plate/model) while disassociating it via surface forensic cues. Early texts privilege authorisation (police/BPBD voice) and rationalisation (procedural/technical accounts); moral cues and mythopoetic framings surface subtly in headlines. Social-actor design personalises/feminises the deceased and functionalises authorities, pre-structuring responsibility maps.
