Abstract

The democratic process of the Regional Elections is developing along with the development of digital technology. Social media has emerged as a key instrument for political campaigns especially when it comes to connecting with Generation Z. They have extensive access to social media and their opinions on online political campaigns reflect their level of participation. This study is to examine how Generation Z in Menganti Village participates in the Pilkada campaign on social media and how they perceive the effectiveness and credibility of the campaign. The methodology of this research is qualitative, and data is collected through campaigns on social media platforms including WhatsApp, Instagram, and TikTok as well as interviews. The results of the study show that adolescents' participation in the Pilkada campaign on social media varies, ranging from simply consuming information to being active in discussions and the dissemination of political content. Digital literacy factors, political preferences, and campaign strategies of candidates have a significant influence on their engagement. In addition, Generation Z's perception of political campaigns on social media tends to be diverse; Some consider it an educational source of information, but others feel that the campaign is full of hoaxes and propaganda. By understanding the patterns of participation and perception of Generation Z in the Pilkada campaign on social media, this research is expected to contribute to increasing digital political literacy as well as a more inclusive and transparent campaign strategy for the younger generation.

Abstract

The use of social media in political campaigns is increasing, especially on video-based platforms like TikTok. In the 2024 Surabaya Election, candidate pair (Paslon) number 1, Eri Armuji, utilized TikTok as one of their digital campaign strategies. This study examines the influence of TikTok campaign content from Paslon number 1 on voter preferences in the 2024 Surabaya Election. It examines how content strategy influences voter perceptions and decisions, employing a qualitative approach and assessing the effectiveness of political communication through agenda-setting and the Elaboration Likelihood Model (ELM). Data was collected through content analysis of a TikTok campaign video by the Eri-Armuji team. The findings indicated that emotional content and local issues had a stronger influence on voter preferences than just campaign promises. Additionally, engagement via likes, comments, and shares boosted the candidates' popularity among young voters.. This study concludes that the digital campaign strategy through Tiktok can be an effective tool in influencing voter preferences, especially by utilizing relevant narratives and readily accepted by digital audiences. This study also emphasized the importance of adaptation of political communication strategies in the digital era to increase the effectiveness of the campaign

Abstract

The phenomenon of money politics remains a significant issue in the context of electoral politics, particularly ahead of the 2024 Regional Elections in Sidoarjo Regency. This study aims to analyze the relationship between the dynamics of money and political practices and the political choices of Generation Z, which has unique characteristics as a digital and critical generation. Using qualitative approaches and voter behavior theory as the framework of analysis, research data were obtained through in-depth interviews, literature studies, and field observations. The results of the study show that although Generation Z in Sidoarjo Regency tends to be critical of the practice of money politics, the influence of economic incentives is still a factor that influences some of them in making political choices. In addition, social media was found to have an important role in shaping Generation Z's political opinions, both for and against money politics. In conclusion, money politics remains a significant challenge in local democracy, although Generation Z shows potential as more conscious agents of political change. This study recommends strengthening political education and regulation to minimize the negative impact of money politics in upcoming elections.

Abstract

The 2024 Sampang Regional Election is an arena for political contestation that is able to bring together two great powers in traditional Madura society, namely Blater and Kyai. Blater is someone who represents a traditional power based on local social and cultural influences. When dealing directly with a Kyai, he becomes a symbol of religious authority that has spiritual legitimacy among religious people, especially students. This study aims to analyze the dynamics of competition between these two forces in fighting for political support, as well as their impact on voter patterns, social stability, and the ongoing democratic process in Sampang today. Using a qualitative approach, this study explores the political strategy, narrative built, and alliance formed between Blater and Kyai. In addition, this study also examines how the power of this dualism is able to influence people's perception of local leadership patterns and how they use cultural and religious symbols to strengthen their respective political positions. The results of this study are expected to provide in-depth insights into the interaction between traditional and religious forces in the local political context, as well as the implications of democracy at the regional level

Abstract

This corruption that ensnared Sidoarjo's regent, Gus Muhdlor, as 2024 drew a public trust crisis over local leadership. The issue is important because public trust is the foundation of local democratic legitimacy. The study aims to examine the effect that cases of corruption have on public trust and the political participation of Sidoarjo residents. A qualitative approach is used through in-depth interviews and analysis of social media commentary. Research shows an increasing skepticism of people's politics, but it does not yield to total apathy. Instead, active citizens form political discontent in digital space, signifying a shift in trust from leadership figures to community collectivity. In conclusion, though the leadership figure loses credibility, the political consciousness of people remains high. The study recommends more open public communication reform and digital space use as a platform for constructive participation in local democracy.

Abstract

The phenomenon of the power of figures as a voter getter in democracy impacts the selection of candidates who will be nominated in the general election contest. Candidate pairs are not seen based on their abilities, but rather on how the candidates can win the general election. The use of figures as a means of attracting voters can be seen from the nomination of presidential and vice presidential candidate pairs in the 2024 presidential election. Two of the three candidate pairs have brought together figures from Nahdlatul Ulama as candidate pairs as a winning strategy. In the discipline of socio-political science, a person's voting behavior in a general election is not just a five-yearly activity; there are reasons and backgrounds as to why someone chooses a particular pair. This study aims to analyze more specifically the influence of Islamic boarding school identification on the choice of presidential and vice presidential candidates based on religion. This study uses a survey method with a correlational approach. The subjects in this study were students of the Al-Amien Islamic boarding school with a sample size of 207 students. The results of the analysis show that Islamic boarding school identification has a significant influence on voting behavior. However, the magnitude of the contribution of santri identification is relatively weak, reflected in the regression coefficient of 0.07, while the rational consideration variable, which includes the evaluation of the vision, mission, programs, and track records of the candidates, is proven to have a more substantial influence, with a regression coefficient reaching 0.43. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that although santri identification contributes to santri political preferences, rational considerations play a more dominant role in their decision-making process.

Abstract

This research aims to understand the social construction of the Sedarum Village community towards money politics in the village head election, how the community interprets and responds to money politics, because this money politics has been considered commonplace by the community, which leads to transactional vote buying. The phenomenon of money politics may be familiar to us, including the people of Sedarum Village. At the time of the village head election, there were two candidates for the position of village head, and both candidates gave money to the community to vote. Because in Sedarum village, it has become a tradition that every time there is an election, there must be money received, even worse, most Sedarum people receive money from the two candidates. Phenomenological theory is used to analyze the meaning of money politics from the community's point of view, and political economy theory that explains the economic motivation behind the acceptance of money politics. The results show that money politics has become a tradition that is difficult to avoid, where most people tend to accept money in exchange for voting, even people who have close connections with candidates can get more money than ordinary people. Money politics not only affects election results, but also changes the social and political structure of the village, where the financial capability of prospective village leaders is more important than the quality of leadership.

Abstract

Development in most developing countries has been uneven and lopsided owing to several reasons stemming from horizontal flow of development communication and urban-centred nature of the mass media, high level of illiteracy, non-involvement/participation of other segments of the society, particularly the rural areas, among other factors. This study, therefore, examines the utilisation of advocacy journalism for the promotion of rural development in Taraba State. Democratic participant media theory was used as the theoretical underpinning for the study. The study adopts an in-depth interview as a methodology where data were collected from journalists in public and private media outfits in Taraba State. The findings of the study show that although journalists in Taraba state know about advocacy journalism, the majority do not practice advocacy journalism owing to operational difficulties, poor funding, and a lack of proper orientation on advocacy, among others. Among other things, the study recommends the need for the incorporation of advocacy journalism into the curriculum and training of journalists in Nigeria at all levels. The study also recommends that government and private media owners should improve the funding and remuneration of journalists, as well as help them surmount operational difficulties to carry out their responsibility of advocacy effectively.
