Abstract

The research’s goal is to know the students ‘skill in vocabulary through Flashcards in learning English. The number of samples of this research was 30 students using the purposive sampling technique of VII-B class. Qualitative research method is applied for this research of the Classroom Action Research (CAR) design in order to know the increasing of the students’ skill in mastering vocabulary through Flashcards. The instrument of the research is a test by giving the multiple-choice items. All of the data are collected and analyzed to get the conclusion as a result of this research. The result of the research showed that the students vocabulary result in pre-test before using flashcard mean score 43.67. It was done three meetings for learning process using flashcard method at the classroom and one meeting for the test of cycle 1. The mean score of the cycle 1 test was 68.67. then, the cycle 2 process was done three meetings for learning process and one meeting for doing the test. Based on the finding the result of cycle 1 mean score was improved and increased, it can be seen from the mean score 81.17. The finding hypothesis is also accepted. Finally, there is the increasing student’s skill towards vocabulary by using flashcard.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of the Three-Step Interview Technique in improving the speaking ability and classroom participation of eleventh-grade students at SMK Negeri 3 Padangsidimpuan. Employing a Classroom Action Research (CAR) design, the study was conducted in two cycles involving 72 students selected by cluster random sampling. Data were collected through pre-tests, post-tests, and student observation sheets. The results showed that the students' speaking ability significantly improved, with mean scores increasing from 57.08 in the pre-test to 81.46 in the post-test Cycle II, representing a 42.70% improvement. Additionally, student participation scores remained consistently high, indicating strong engagement throughout the intervention. The findings suggest that the Three-Step Interview Technique is an effective cooperative learning strategy to enhance students' speaking competence and classroom interaction. The study recommends the wider application of this technique in EFL classrooms to foster communicative competence in a supportive learning environment.

Abstract

This research investigates the effectiveness of the Cooperative Script Model in improving students' reading comprehension of descriptive texts at SMA Negeri 6 Padangsidimpuan. The study employs a quasi-experimental design with a nonequivalent control group, involving 60 tenth-grade students divided equally between experimental and control groups. Data collection utilized pre-tests and post-tests consisting of 25 multiple-choice questions measuring various reading comprehension skills. The experimental group received instruction through the Cooperative Script Model, while the control group was taught using conventional methods. Statistical analysis revealed that students taught using the Cooperative Script Model achieved significantly higher scores (mean=77.50) compared to those taught conventionally (mean=69.50). The t-test results (t=8.782, p<0.05) confirmed a significant difference in reading comprehension between the two groups. These findings demonstrate that the Cooperative Script Model effectively enhances students' descriptive text comprehension by fostering collaborative learning, active engagement, and mutual teaching opportunities. The study contributes to the growing body of evidence supporting cooperative learning approaches in English language education.

Abstract

This research investigates the effectiveness of Directed Reading Thinking Activity (DRTA) in enhancing reading comprehension of descriptive texts among tenth-grade students at SMA Negeri 6 Padangsidimpuan. Using classroom action research with 32 students from Class X-1, the study implemented DRTA through a systematic approach of prediction, verification, and reflection. Initial assessment showed only 15.625% of students achieving scores above the Minimum Competency Criteria (KKM) of 75. Findings demonstrate significant improvement, with average scores increasing from 56.56 in pre-cycle to 71.91 in Cycle I and 83.34 in Cycle II. The percentage of students reaching KKM rose to 90.625% after Cycle II. DRTA effectively transformed reading into an interactive process, addressing key challenges of vocabulary deficiencies and low engagement. The findings highlight the importance of student-centered approaches in EFL reading instruction.

Abstract

This study examines the critical reading skills of seventh-grade students at SMP N 5 Padangsidimpuan. Using a quantitative descriptive approach, the research assessed 30 students through a critical reading test based on Nurhadi's six aspects of critical reading: remembering explicit facts, interpreting implied meanings, applying concepts, analyzing content, synthesizing content, and evaluating reading material. Results indicate that students demonstrate very good abilities in five aspects, with scores ranging from 80 to 100, particularly excelling in remembering explicit facts (scores of 97-100) and evaluating content (scores of 90-97). However, synthesizing reading content emerged as an area needing improvement, with scores of 70 and 57. The overall average score of 85 places students' critical reading abilities in the "Very Good" category according to Arikunto's rating scale. These findings suggest that while students have developed strong foundations in most aspects of critical reading, targeted instruction in synthesizing information would benefit their comprehensive critical reading development. The study recommends implementing diverse reading materials, collaborative learning activities, and cross-curricular integration of critical reading skills to enhance students' abilities, particularly in synthesizing textual information.

Abstract

This classroom action research aims to investigate the effectiveness of comic strips in enhancing students' reading comprehension of recount texts. The study was conducted at SMP Negeri 4 Padangsidimpuan during the 2023–2024 academic year, involving 60 eighth-grade students. The research design followed two cycles of Classroom Action Research (CAR), each consisting of planning, acting, observing, and reflecting stages. Data were collected through a pre-test, post-test 1, and post-test 2, supported by classroom observation. The results revealed a significant improvement in students’ reading performance. The mean score increased from 53.67 in the pre-test to 68.08 in post-test 1, and finally to 81.92 in post-test 2. The percentage of students who passed the minimum competency standard (KKM) rose from 3.33% to 86.67%. These findings demonstrate that comic strips are an effective instructional medium that can foster student motivation, support vocabulary development, and improve comprehension of text structures in recount writing. This study concludes that the use of comic strips can significantly enhance reading comprehension skills and should be considered as an engaging and pedagogically valuable tool in English language classrooms.
