Abstract

The background of the problem in this research was aimed at finding out the correlation between vocabulary mastery and speaking skill of the tenth-grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Angkola Timur. The population of this research of the tenth-grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Angkola Timur. The members of population were 90 students. The 90 students were taken by a researcher using Cluster Random Sampling as the class sample. The hypothesis in this research was there is a significant correlation between vocabulary mastery and speaking ability of the tenth-grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Angkola Timur. In collecting the data, the researcher used the multiple-choice test to measure vocabulary mastery and oral test to measure speaking ability. In analyzing the data, the researcher used the Pearson Product Moment formula. After analyzing the data, it was found that r calculated was .84 with level significance .04, and the degree of freedom (df= n-2) was 28. It means that r- counted was higher than r-table (.83>.32). So, the relationship between two variables above was significant. Therefore, the alternative hypothesis, that said “There is significant correlation between vocabulary mastery and speaking ability of the tenth-grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Angkola Timur” was accepted. Based on the finding of this research, it could be concluded that there is correlation between vocabulary mastery and speaking ability of the tenth-grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Angkola Timur. It means that the students’ vocabulary mastery will improve students’ speaking skill.

Abstract

The pandemic has accompanied the education sector for about one year. Every student used to use mobile phone as the schools’ tool to have a home class learning. While, the signal of internet has not spread all over the villages in north Sumatera, they have difficulty to get the signal for joining the learning process. Among all the learning applications now, WhatsApp is the chosen application for the students in learning speaking class. The method uses in this research is descriptive method The data obtained from the true and recent condition of the third semester students of civics program at education and teaching faculty of Universitas Graha Nusantara. The result of this research tells the students’ real condition in learning speaking by using WhatsApp application for this pandemic situation. WhatsApp was chosen because there were many students lived in the remote area which has no internet signal. A researcher focuses on teaching the English basic for daily communication. The advantages of teaching speaking for non-English students give them supplies to communicate using English in this recent developing era.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to determine the metacognitive reading strategy EFL students of the English Department use during their academic period during this internet era. The participants were 76 English Education Study Program students from the academic year 2020/2021. Data came from the OSORS (Online Survey of Reading Strategy) questionnaire that provided accurate data. This study revealed that the students who participated in this study reported a wide range of metacognitive strategies when reading online academic texts. The Global Reading Strategies were the most popular metacognitive reading approach students use when reading online. The students participate in live chat with native speakers of English, where interacting with native speakers, the students can better grasp the native English language, phrases, and intonation by conversing with a native speaker. In keeping the reported use of strategies that include looking at sites covering both sides of an issue. The student searches for other areas that would analyze the topic, then combined his previous knowledge with information on the website. And the learners must have learned the first language. The role of L1 or its use is relevant in issues such as transfer or interference from L1 or even as a learning strategy in learning a second language.

Abstract

Interview Step is collaborative learning technique. Interview Step proves the students’ participation. The speaking skills of the students are not good. The students still have difficulty in aspect of fluency and pronunciation in speaking. The research method is quantitative experimental. Next, in this research is test as instrument, test was divided to pre test and post test. To analysis the data, the writer used formulation of analysis product moment. After calculating the data, there is an effect Of Using Three Steps Interview Techniques To Improve Students Speaking Skills At Tenth Grade of SMA Negeri 2 Rantau Utara. Abstract

Learning about English pronunciation is one of the obstacles for every student who is or wants to learn. This happens because the mother tongue of the Indonesian people, most of the languages from their respective regions. This research uses descriptive research method, because it focuses on how students pronounce in English. The population of three students at Universitas Graha Nusantara is 28 students. The result shows that there are six effect of pronunciation learning, theya are native language, the age factor, amount of expusere, phonetic ability, attitude and identity, and motivation and concern for good pronunciation. Beside that, combinations of sounds, word stress, rythm and intonation also the problem of the students in learning pronunciation, and through practice with voice recording students' abilities in pronunciation improve and become better.

Abstract

This research was aimed to describe the connotative meaning in the proverbs of the Batak Language which used by people in Batak tribe which most live in North Sumatera. The writer formulates the problem of this research is how the connotative meaning in the proverbs of Batak language? The data of this research was the proverbs of Batak language which taken from Hatobangon who used proverbs in cultural ceremony in Tandihat Baru village region of Tapanuli selatan, North Sumatera. The method of this research was descriptive qualitative in order to analyze the semantic of connotative meaning of proverbs in Batak language. The results of this research showed that that the connotative meaning in the proverbs of Batak Language is having differences to denotative ones and its meaning depends on personal experience of Batak people experience and mostly relate the meaning of its proverbs to human life such as responsibility, hard work, social concern, and patience

Abstract

This study investigates the challenges eighth-grade students face in comprehending descriptive English texts at MTs Swasta Darul Akhiroh, Bonan Dolok, during the first semester of the 2022-2023 academic year. The research specifically examines internal and external factors influencing reading comprehension skills among a sample of 30 students. Employing a qualitative research methodology with a descriptive approach, the study utilizes cluster sampling to select the entire class as the research sample. Data collection instruments include questionnaires to assess the classroom environment and students' attitudes towards reading English texts, alongside tests designed to evaluate students' proficiency in various aspects of reading comprehension such as identifying main ideas, supporting details, vocabulary context, and answering detailed questions. The findings reveal significant difficulties in reading comprehension among the students, attributed to a lack of vocabulary, the length of texts, and a general disinterest in engaging with the reading material actively. Test results indicate particular weaknesses in answering detailed questions, with only 27.7% of students performing satisfactorily in this area. This highlights a critical area for intervention, suggesting a need for targeted strategies to enhance students' reading skills and overall engagement with English texts.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the effect of using flashcards in vocabulary teaching on improving students' vocabulary acquisition at SMA Negeri 1 Padang Bolak Julu. The method used was classroom action research which consisted of two cycles. The data collection instruments were pre-test, post-test cycle 1 and post-test cycle 2 along with observation and interview. The data were statistically analyzed by calculating the mean and percentage increase in students' scores. The results showed that the use of flashcards was effective in improving students' vocabulary mastery. The average score of the students increased from 43.67 in the pre-test to 82.5 in the second cycle post-test. The percentage of score increase from the pre-test to the second cycle post-test was 88.9%. In addition, 83.33% of the students successfully achieved the minimum criteria (KKM) at the end of the second cycle. The results of this study support the hypothesis that the use of flashcards has a significant positive impact on vocabulary learning.

Abstract

This research aims to explore an innovative approach to improve the language skills of eighth grade students using the duet feature of the TikTok application.This research applies a quantitative methodology to evaluate the effectiveness of using video conversations on TikTok in educational settings. The study involved 30 students from SMP Negeri 4 Padangsimpuan as the research sample. Data collection was conducted by providing students with a conversational text containing over 20 vocabulary items, followed by documenting their performance scores. These scores were then subjected to statistical analysis to evaluate the impact of the TikTok duet feature on the students' speaking ability. The results showed a significant fluctuation in the students' speaking ability, with an initial average pre-test score of 59.83 dropping to 34.16 in the first post-test. This decrease suggested a temporary decline in speaking skills. However, subsequent educational interventions, including debriefing and targeted speaking practice, resulted in significant improvement, as evidenced by an average score of 82.5 on the second post-test. Analysis revealed a significant increase of 37.89% in speaking ability from the pre-test to the second post-test, despite the initial decline.

Abstract

In this research is carried out in order to know about how far the effectiveness of using lyrical poem in improving students’ vocabulary at the eleventh grade of SMA Negeri 1 Angkola Barat is. And in this research the writer applies the total random research. The number of sample in this research is consist of 36 students. The method used in this study was a quantitative method. In collecting the data, the writer administered pre-test, post-test and questionnaire which consists of 25 questions of pre & post-test and 8 question of questionnaire. After administering test and questionnaire to the sample of study, then the writer documented the students’ score. Then the writer calculated it with the score  using SPSS  v.22. In analyzing the data, the writer used SPSS v.22. After analyzing the data  in SPSS v.22, it has been got that the average mean before treatment (Pre-Test) is 53.22, the average mean after treatment (Post-Test) is 89.56, the average mean before treatment (Pre-Questionnaire) is 24.92 and  the average mean after treatment (Post-Questionnaire) is 30.44. After got the average mean, the writer  used SPSS v.22 again to analyze how far the improving students’ vocabulary, it has been got that percentage improving students’ vocabulary is 68.28%. It mean that There is a significant improvement of the students’ vocabulary at the eleventh grade students’ of SMA Negeri 1 Angkola Barat. And the hypothesis of this research is accepted.
