Abstract

Fear of Missing Out (FOMO) is the fear of feeling "left behind" due to not participating in certain activities. It is a feeling of anxiety and fear that arises within a person due to missing out on something new, such as news, trends, and other things. One cause of FOMO is the use of social media. The development of today's technology makes it easy for us to receive millions of pieces of information. The phenomenon of Fear of Missing Out (FOMO) is one of the important factors influencing the social behavior of the younger generation in the digital media era. This study aims to explain how the habit of 'hanging out' is driven by the FOMO phenomenon as a way to maintain membership in social groups. This study uses a qualitative approach with a descriptive interpretative method within the constructivism paradigm. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with young informants who actively hang out at Pasaraya Blok M, supported by social media observation and documentation. The results show that hanging out is no longer understood merely as a recreational activity or a way to fill free time, but has shifted into a social practice laden with symbolic meaning, especially in the context of identity formation and self-existence. Exposure to social media content, particularly through TikTok and Instagram, shapes the social construct of Blok M as a popular and desirable public space. Based on Maslow and Glasser's perspective, FOMO is understood to be a manifestation of an unstable social need. This study concludes that the hangout culture at Pasaraya Blok M functions not only as a space for social interaction but also as a medium for self-representation, reflecting the dynamic psychological needs of the younger generation within the context of urban digital culture.

Abstract

This study examines the phenomenon of "code mixing," popularly known asthe "Anak Jaksel" (South Jakarta youth)language style, among Generation Zin South Jakarta as of 2025. In the era of globalization, language hastransformed from a mere pragmatic communication tool into a vitalinstrument for forming cultural and social identities. This research aims tocomprehensively analyze the variations of code-mixing patterns, theunderlying sociocultural factors, and their implications for social identityconstruction within a global urban society. Using a qualitative approach andin-depth interviews, the study found that the most dominant form of codemixing is intrasentential, specifically the insertion of English lexical wordsinto Indonesian sentence structures. Common terms such as "anxious,""literally," or "make sense" are often used spontaneously, influenced bysocial circles, digitalmedia exposure, and the internet. The findings indicatethat this practice serves as a linguistic strategy to create more relaxed, comfortable, and expressive communication. Furthermore, based on SocialIdentity Theory, code mixing functions as a group identity marker that fostersa sense of belonging and confidence among Gen Z. However, the study alsoreveals a process of identity negotiation; informants consciously adjust theirlanguage by reducing code mixing and using formal Indonesian wheninteracting with lecturers or older individuals to maintain professionalismand politeness.

Abstract

Condet, located in East Jakarta, is a multicultural area inhabited by Betawi communities and Arab descendants who have coexisted for generations. This study aims to examine how intercultural interaction and communication between Arab and Betawi communities in Condet contribute to the maintenance of social harmony amid cultural diversity and ongoing social change. Using a qualitative approach with a constructivist paradigm, this research employs field research methods through observations, in-depth interviews, and literature review. Data were collected from community leaders, religious figures, local business actors, and residents actively involved in social and religious activities. The findings reveal that social harmony in Condet is shaped by a long historical process of coexistence, strong religious values as a shared social foundation, effective everyday communication, and cultural integration through intermarriage and economic cooperation. Social interactions occur naturally without rigid ethnic boundaries, supported by shared language use and collective religious practices. Although challenges such as modernization, declining traditional social activities, and external influences exist, these issues have not led to significant conflict. Instead, they are generally resolved through open communication and communal deliberation. This study concludes that effective intercultural communication and shared social values play a crucial role in sustaining harmony in multicultural urban communities, positioning Condet as a relevant model for peaceful interethnic coexistence.

Abstract

This research is driven by the digital revolution, which has made TikTok a major source of information for young people. However, because of its personalized algorithm, TikTok has also become a platform for the widespread spread of hoaxes. The main goal of this study is to examine how exposure of Islamic journalism students at UIN Mahmud Yunus Batusangkar to hoaxes on TikTok affects public trust. These students were chosen as subjects because of their strategic significance as future journalists who hold journalistic ethics and tabayyun (verification) values. In-depth online interviews with students from the 2022–2025 cohorts and documentation in the form of screenshots of their TikTok activity were used to collect data for a descriptive qualitative research approach. The Miles and Huberman paradigm, which includes data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing, was used to analyze the data. The findings show that exposure to TikTok hoaxes has a big impact on the cognitive, affective, and behavioral aspects of public trust. Students showed strong ability in recognizing false information on the cognitive level. This exposure caused negative emotions in the affective dimension, including disappointment and anger over poor-quality content. Students responded critically on the behavioral level by reporting content, offering instructional explanations in the comments section, and refraining from spreading false information. The study found that Islamic journalism students have good media literacy protection through active verification and healthy skepticism, even though the intensity of hoaxes on TikTok is very high.

Abstract

Instagram functions not only as a platform for information sharing but alsoas a digital public sphere that enables people to express aspirations andcollective resistance. This phenomenon is reflected in the 17+8 People'sDemands Movement, which was represented through the use of pink andgreen color symbols that later evolved into the Brave Pink and Hero Greentrends on Instagram. This study aims to analyze the representation of pinkand green symbols as forms of Indonesian netizens’ resistance within the17+8 People's Demands Movement. The novelty of this research lies in itsfocus on color symbols as a medium of digital resistance communication, whereas previous studies have predominantly examined resistancethrough textual narratives and hashtags. This research employs aqualitative descriptive approach using Roland Barthes’ semiotic analysis, which examines denotative, connotative, and mythical meanings. The datawere collected from Instagram posts containing pink and green symbolsrelated to the movement through observation, documentation, andliterature review. The findings reveal that, at the denotative level, the pinkand green symbols function as the visual identity of the movement. At theconnotative level, these symbols represent courage, solidarity, hope, andthe spirit of struggle in articulating socio-political demands. At themythical level, the symbols construct a narrative of public resistanceagainst social inequality through digital participation. The study alsodemonstrates that Instagram serves as a digital public sphere thatfacilitates the production, distribution, and exchange of meanings in aparticipatory manner, thereby strengthening collective awareness amongnetizens. This study concludes that visual symbols on social mediafunction as a medium of political communication and digital activism infostering collective resistance in the digital era.

Abstract

As a visual social media platform, Instagram exerts significant influence in conveying promotional messages, including within the context of higher education. Universitas Hang Tuah Pekanbaru actively utilizes this platform to introduce its study programs to the general public, particularly the digital-savvy younger generation. However, there is a lack of research specifically measuring the impact of Instagram promotional content on students' decisions regarding their choice of study program, particularly within the campus community. This study aims to analyze the extent to which Universitas Hang Tuah Pekanbaru's Instagram promotional content influences second-semester students' decisions in selecting a study program. The research focuses on second-semester students from the Communication Science, Information Systems, and Informatics Engineering study programs. The objective is to identify the visual factors, promotional messages, and content interactivity that shape their perceptions and decisions. A quantitative research method employing a survey approach was used. Data collection was conducted via an online questionnaire designed based on promotional content indicators and decision-making variables. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, including regression and correlation analyses. The correlation analysis revealed a positive and significant relationship between Instagram promotional content and the decision to choose a study program (r = 0.61, p < 0.01). These findings support Social Media Marketing theory, which posits that engaging, informative, and relevant content can generate audience interest and influence their decisions.

Abstract

The development of social media has led to the expansion and proliferation of information media, enabling rapid access to information. However, the speed of access and the abundance of media do not guarantee adherence to the Journalistic Code of Ethics, which every journalist is expected to uphold. According to SIMFONI-PPA 2024, sexual harassment cases in 2023 were the most prevalent in Indonesia, with 13,156 reported cases. Given the sensitive nature of these cases for victims and their communities, this study employs Klaus KrippendorffÔÇÖs content analysis method to analyze 244 news articles published on Detik.com from January to March 2024, focusing on the application of the 11 articles of the Journalistic Code of Ethics in each report. Keywords: Content Analysis, Detik.com, Journalistic Code of Ethics, Klaus Krippendorff, Sexual Harassment.
