Abstract

The increasing population in Surakarta City, particularly in the densely populated Sangkrah Village, has contributed to an increase in the volume of domestic waste, or what we better know as household waste. Although the importance of waste management based on 3R (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) has been frequently voiced, we still face problems such as lack of infrastructure and low community participation. Therefore, this study aims to see whether population density affects residents' awareness in managing household waste with the 3R principle in Sangkrah Village. This study used a quantitative method with a survey approach, involving 100 respondents from Sangkrah Village who were randomly selected (accidental sampling). The data obtained were analyzed using the Pearson correlation test and simple linear regression. The results show that most respondents have a fairly good understanding of the 3R concept. However, waste recycling practices in the field are still relatively ordinary. Our statistical analysis also shows that population density has no significant relationship with the level of community awareness in managing 3R waste (P-value 0.958; correlation coefficient 0.005).

Abstract

Rapid urbanization in big cities in Indonesia has a complex impact on the psychological well-being of residents. This study is a literature review that analyzes various factors of urbanization such as traffic congestion, environmental noise, limited green open space, and population density that contribute to increased stress, anxiety, and other mental health disorders. In addition to the direct impact on individuals, urbanization also affects the social structure of society which is increasingly individualistic and has reduced social support. The findings show that urbanization not only has physical and economic impacts, but also psychological ones. Therefore, a holistic city policy is needed with a multidimensional approach, including the development of green space, sustainable transportation, noise control, and strengthening community-based mental health services to improve the psychological well-being of urban communities.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the influence of Instagram social media usage in promoting Lake Toba tourism on increasing brand awareness and tourist visits in the post-pandemic period. The survey was conducted with 49 respondents who are productive-age tourists and actively use Instagram as a source of travel information. The results show that the majority of respondents frequently see promotional content about Lake Toba on Instagram and consider the platform a primary source of information when planning trips. More than 80% of respondents expressed interest in visiting Lake Toba after seeing promotional content on Instagram, and 85% of them seek travel information through the platform. Instagram also creates positive associations with Lake Toba’s image and encourages word-of-mouth promotion. These findings confirm that Instagram plays a significant role in building brand awareness and increasing tourists’ interest and decisions to visit Lake Toba.

Abstract

This article examines the identity construction and cultural negotiation processes experienced by second-generation migrants in urban areas. Using a qualitative approach through case studies and in-depth interviews, this research highlights how second-generation migrants construct transnational identities that are fluid, hybrid, and contextual. The results show that they face challenges in the form of discrimination, stereotypes, and social pressures that often lead to identity crises, but also open up space for cultural resistance and creativity. Digital media plays a crucial role as a means of self-expression and the formation of transnational imagined communities, strengthening transnational connectedness and identity flexibility. These findings emphasize that second-generation migrant identities are not simply inherited from family but are dynamically shaped through social interactions, daily experiences, and the flow of globalization.

Abstract

This study challenges the depiction of power in the symbolic structure of traditional rituals in Eastern Indonesia through the perspectives of cultural anthropology. Rituals are viewed not only as spiritual practices or practices embedded in past traditions but as symbolic arenas where power relations, social authority, and collective personality are enacted. In traditional societies, authority is often enshrined in sacral signs- such as relics, hymns, or celebrations- each with a hierarchical meaning that restates authority. The data collection was conducted using qualitative ethnographic approach, where participant observations and in-depth interviews with traditional rulers, ritual experts, and community members involved in the ceremonies were utilized to collect data. The analytic emphasis was on deriving the meaning of ritual symbols and comparing them to the social power structures that survive. The results reveal that rituals are used as a means of justifying power of traditional leaders, maintaining social stratifications, and acting as means of social control. Symbolic analysis discloses that power is not only a result of political or economic status but also of spiritual legitimacy passed down through generations. At the same time, the new presence of women and youth is an indicator of negotiated authority and changing significances. Finally, power in the Eastern Indonesian societies is developed through symbolic formation based on shared opinions, normative systems, and cultural reproduction.

Abstract

This study examines the transformation of social structures in digital society through a quantitative approach integrating social network analysis and survey data. Using a sample of 200 active social media users in major Indonesian cities, the research maps relational patterns, measures centrality, and evaluates network density and modularity to understand how digital interactions shape social cohesion, identity, and influence. Findings indicate that digital platforms facilitate the formation of new solidarities and broaden participation, yet they do not fully replace offline identities. At the same time, interaction is concentrated around key actors and shaped by platform algorithms, revealing persistent hierarchies and structural inequalities. The study highlights the ambivalent nature of digital social spaces, where connectivity coexists with fragmentation, and underscores the role of digital networks in actively constructing social meaning. These insights contribute to understanding the complex dynamics of social transformation in the digital era and provide a foundation for future research on hybrid social structures.

Abstract

The growth of the urban middle class in Indonesia has become one of the most significant social phenomena in the past two decades, reshaping lifestyles, consumption patterns, and identity formation. This study critically examines the dynamics of the urban middle class through three interrelated dimensions: consumerism, social mobility, and the construction of new identities. Using a quantitative survey method with 400 respondents from five major Indonesian cities, data were collected through a Likert-scale questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlations, and multiple linear regression. The results show that consumerism is strongly embedded in middle-class practices, with high preferences for branded goods and lifestyle consumption, functioning as both status symbols and markers of modernity. Social mobility is primarily associated with education, which respondents consider the most important factor in achieving upward mobility, although structural limitations of the labor market often constrain these aspirations. Identity construction is increasingly mediated by digital platforms, where social media serves as a space for professional representation and urban belonging. Regression analysis reveals that consumerism (β = 0.41) has a stronger influence than social mobility (β = 0.36) in shaping new identities, indicating that lifestyle symbols play a more central role than structural achievements. Overall, the study concludes that the urban middle class embodies both cosmopolitan modernity and structural vulnerability, making it a socially and culturally contested category rather than merely an economic stratum.

Abstract

This study examines the dynamics of gender relations in modern Indonesian families, focusing on the transformation of domestic and public roles. Using a quantitative survey method involving 700 respondents (350 couples) from five major cities, data were collected through Likert-scale questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlations, and multiple linear regression. The findings reveal that child-rearing is increasingly perceived as a shared responsibility, yet domestic work remains disproportionately borne by women, reflecting the persistence of the double burden. At the same time, women’s economic contributions are widely acknowledged as essential, although men continue to be regarded as the primary breadwinners, illustrating a form of patriarchal bargain. Regression analysis shows that public role participation (β = 0.41) has a stronger influence than domestic role participation (β = 0.33) on perceptions of gender equality, suggesting that women’s involvement in the public sphere plays a key role in reshaping family relations. However, the persistence of traditional norms indicates that gender equality in modern families remains more aspirational than fully realized. Overall, the study concludes that gender relations in Indonesian modern families represent a negotiated balance between traditional patriarchal values and emerging egalitarian ideals.

Abstract

In the digital transformation era, social media has become a key arena for political communication and participation, especially among youth. Platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, WhatsApp, and X enable rapid and interactive exchanges that shape political awareness and engagement. This study explores the role of social media in influencing the political behavior of university students in Makassar, a city known for its educational and political diversity. Using a mixed-method design, data were collected through surveys of 200 students and in-depth interviews with 20 participants. The analysis employed frequency distribution and thematic interpretation, supported by triangulation for validity. Findings show that 70% of students use social media more than three hours daily, primarily on Instagram and TikTok. These platforms enhance political awareness (70%) and peer discussions (60%), though their impact on political trust is inconsistent. Participation often takes the form of online activism, such as sharing political content (60%) and signing digital petitions (40%), with some extending engagement to voting and rallies. Overall, social media acts as both an empowering and challenging space for democratic participation, highlighting the need for stronger digital literacy to counter misinformation and superficial activism.

Abstract

Religious pluralism remains a critical concern in multi-religious societies such as Indonesia, where diverse faiths coexist within one national framework. Central Sulawesi presents a distinctive context, having experienced religious conflict, particularly the Poso violence in the late 1990s, followed by sustained peacebuilding efforts. This study examines how interfaith communities in Central Sulawesi interpret and practice pluralism to strengthen social cohesion in post-conflict settings. Using a qualitative case study approach, the research explores the experiences of religious leaders, youth, activists, and community members engaged in interfaith activities. Data collection involved interviews, focus group discussions, participant observation, and document analysis of interfaith programs. Thematic analysis identified key patterns related to tolerance, dialogue, collaboration, and the obstacles to maintaining harmony. The findings show that everyday interfaith encounters help reduce prejudice, build trust, and encourage cooperation, aligning with the principles of the contact hypothesis. Activities such as joint community service, cultural gatherings, and peace forums promote mutual understanding and solidarity. Despite these positive outcomes, challenges persist, including lingering mistrust, unequal access to resources, socio-economic disparities, and exposure to radical narratives. The study concludes that inclusive engagement and supportive policies are essential for transforming religious diversity into sustainable social cohesion.
