Abstract

Dengue fever remains a significant public health concern in tropical regions, particularly in Southeast Asia. This cross-sectional study aimed to assess the prevalence and risk factors of dengue fever among children in Makassar, Indonesia. A total of 400 children aged 0-14 were surveyed, and data were collected on socioeconomic status, environmental conditions, and preventive behaviors such as mosquito net use. The overall prevalence of dengue was 25.8%, with higher rates observed in low-income households and those with standing water. Children from low-income families had a dengue prevalence of 26.8%, while the prevalence in high-income households was 23.5%. Households with standing water had a significantly higher dengue prevalence (30.2%) compared to those without (22.7%). Inconsistent mosquito net use was associated with higher dengue rates, with children in households that sometimes used nets having the highest prevalence (28.3%). These findings highlight the importance of addressing environmental and socioeconomic factors in dengue prevention strategies. Public health efforts should focus on community education, eliminating breeding sites, and promoting consistent use of preventive measures to reduce dengue transmission.

Abstract

Cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases are significant contributors to morbidity and mortality worldwide. This study evaluates the proficiency of physical therapists in cardiovascular and pulmonary physical therapy (CPPT) within Kuwait’s public healthcare sector. A cross-sectional survey was administered to 200 physical therapists, assessing their knowledge, clinical skills, and challenges in delivering CPPT. The results revealed that 55% of therapists demonstrated moderate proficiency, with 25% exhibiting high proficiency and 20% scoring in the low proficiency category. Regression analysis identified years of experience and CPPT specialization as significant predictors of proficiency, accounting for 27% of the variance (R² = 0.27, p < 0.01). The study also highlighted key gaps in continuing professional development, with 65% of respondents identifying a need for further training in exercise prescription and 50% reporting a lack of education on rehabilitation protocols. Additionally, 40% of therapists cited insufficient specialized CPPT training programs as a major challenge, while 25% reported resource limitations. The findings underscore the need for improved training, standardized rehabilitation protocols, and enhanced resource allocation to optimize CPPT services in Kuwait. Addressing these gaps can enhance patient outcomes and improve the quality of rehabilitation services for cardiovascular and pulmonary patients in the region.

Abstract

The growing burden of chronic diseases, such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and hypertension, has prompted an increased focus on the use of digital health interventions (DHIs) in healthcare management. This study examines the adoption and effectiveness of DHIs among Middle Eastern populations, specifically in Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE. Using a cross-sectional, quantitative approach, data were collected from 500 participants through a structured survey. The results revealed that 70% of participants used DHIs, with mobile apps being the most commonly utilized tool. Additionally, 65% of DHI users reported improved health outcomes, particularly in disease monitoring and medication adherence. Despite these positive outcomes, 15% of participants found DHIs ineffective, highlighting barriers such as technological literacy and accessibility. The findings suggest that while DHIs hold great potential for managing chronic diseases, efforts to improve access and usability are necessary to ensure broader adoption and greater effectiveness. Policymakers and healthcare providers are encouraged to integrate DHIs into national healthcare strategies, particularly in underserved and rural populations.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed significant disparities in vaccination rates, particularly among underserved communities. This study explores the impact of social determinants of health, including income, education, and healthcare access, on COVID-19 vaccination uptake in marginalized populations. Using a cross-sectional design, data were collected from 100 individuals across different socioeconomic backgrounds to assess vaccination behavior. The results demonstrate that individuals with higher income, better education, and greater healthcare access had significantly higher vaccination rates, while those facing economic hardship and limited healthcare access were less likely to be vaccinated. The study highlights the need for targeted public health interventions that address structural barriers and misinformation to improve vaccine equity. Recommendations include expanding healthcare access in underserved areas, enhancing health literacy, and building trust through culturally sensitive outreach. Addressing these factors is crucial for reducing health disparities and ensuring a more equitable public health response.

Abstract

Childhood obesity is a growing public health concern in urban Brazil, driven by socio-economic disparities, unhealthy dietary habits, and sedentary behaviors. This study aims to examine the key determinants of childhood obesity and assess the effectiveness of current public health interventions. A cross-sectional quantitative design was used to collect data from 1,000 children aged 5-14 in major urban areas, including São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. The results reveal that children from lower socio-economic backgrounds are at higher risk of obesity due to limited access to healthy food and recreational spaces. Screen time was positively correlated with BMI, while physical activity was negatively correlated, indicating the importance of reducing sedentary behaviors and promoting active lifestyles. School-based physical activity programs were found to be effective in reducing obesity rates, though gaps in program reach and equity remain. The study concludes that a comprehensive, equity-focused public health strategy is essential for addressing childhood obesity in urban Brazil, with a particular emphasis on expanding access to physical activity programs and addressing socio-economic barriers to healthy living.

Abstract

This study investigates the impact of rapid urbanization on public health in Jakarta, Indonesia, with a specific focus on air quality and its effects on respiratory disorders. Jakarta, a rapidly growing urban center, faces significant air pollution due to increased vehicular emissions, industrial activities, and population density. This research evaluates air quality data and the prevalence of respiratory diseases, including asthma, bronchitis, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), in both urban and suburban areas of Jakarta. The study uses a quantitative approach, analyzing air pollutant levels (PM2.5, NO2, CO, and O3) and health data over a one-year period, with an emphasis on demographic factors such as age, gender, and socio-economic status. The results reveal that urban areas experience significantly higher pollutant levels compared to suburban areas, leading to a higher prevalence of respiratory disorders. Furthermore, seasonal variations, with worsened air quality during the dry season, exacerbate the health impacts, particularly among vulnerable populations such as children, the elderly, and low-income groups. The study highlights the urgent need for effective urban air quality management, public health interventions, and policies to mitigate the adverse effects of pollution on respiratory health. The findings emphasize the importance of addressing the socio-economic disparities in health outcomes and the need for targeted healthcare solutions in high-pollution urban areas.

Abstract

Maternal mortality remains a critical issue in underserved regions of Indonesia, where access to healthcare is limited due to geographical and socioeconomic barriers. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of telemedicine in reducing maternal mortality rates in these regions. A quantitative approach was employed, using pre- and post-intervention data collected from 500 pregnant women and healthcare providers across rural Indonesia. The findings demonstrate a significant reduction in maternal mortality rates from 35.2 to 22.1 deaths per 100,000 live births (p = 0.005), along with improvements in healthcare access, consultation frequency, and hospital visits. Furthermore, telemedicine usage increased from 30% to 85% (p = 0.000), indicating widespread acceptance of remote consultations. While some challenges, such as technical issues and lack of personal interaction, were noted, the overall impact of telemedicine was positive. The results suggest that telemedicine interventions are a promising strategy to reduce maternal mortality in low-resource settings and highlight the need for enhanced infrastructure and user training to maximize its benefits.
