Abstract

Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), encompassing Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC), are chronic gastrointestinal disorders characterized by inflammation of the digestive tract. The gut microbiota plays a crucial role in IBD pathogenesis, yet its specific taxonomic and functional alterations remain to be fully elucidated. In this study, we conducted metagenomic sequencing analysis to investigate the composition and functionality of the gut microbiota in patients with CD or UC compared to healthy controls. Stool samples were collected from a cohort of patients with CD or UC and healthy controls, and metagenomic sequencing was performed using a state-of-the-art sequencing platform. Bioinformatics analysis revealed distinct taxonomic profiles and functional pathways in CD/UC patients compared to healthy controls. Our findings provide valuable insights into the microbial dysbiosis associated with IBD and highlight potential targets for therapeutic interventions aimed at restoring microbial homeostasis. This study contributes to advancing our understanding of the complex interplay between the gut microbiota and IBD pathophysiology, paving the way for personalized approaches to IBD management.

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of Sr90 radiation in eliminating biofilm production and inhibiting the growth of Staphylococcus aureus, a Gram-positive, facultative anaerobic bacterium responsible for infections such as pneumonia, sepsis, and bacteremia, whose virulence is enhanced by biofilm formation. A cross-sectional descriptive design combined with a case–control analytical approach was employed, with bacterial isolates obtained from catheters and other clinical samples of patients in Baghdad hospitals during 2023–2024. Biofilm-producing S. aureus isolates were exposed to varying doses of Sr90 radiation, with and without aluminum shielding, and their biofilm activity was assessed using Congo-Red Agar before and after exposure. Results demonstrated that all isolates (100%) exhibited biofilm production prior to treatment; however, after exposure to Sr90, biofilm production was completely inhibited (0%), as indicated by red colony coloration on Congo-Red Agar. Furthermore, Sr90 exposure produced 100% bactericidal activity across increasing doses and time intervals, whether aluminum shielding was applied or not. These findings provide evidence that Sr90 radiation effectively disrupts biofilm production and eradicates S. aureus, highlighting its potential as an innovative therapeutic strategy for managing biofilm-associated infections.

Abstract

Long COVID, or Post-Acute Sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection (PASC), is an emerging global public health challenge. This study aims to quantitatively assess the prevalence, symptom profiles, and long-term consequences of Long COVID while evaluating the preparedness of healthcare systems to manage its impact. A cross-sectional analysis was conducted on 5,000 individuals from high-, middle-, and low-income regions who experienced COVID-19. Results show that 30% of participants reported persistent symptoms, with fatigue (60%), cognitive impairment (45%), and shortness of breath (40%) being the most common. Long COVID disproportionately affected older adults, females, and those with pre-existing conditions. Furthermore, 50% of patients reported an inability to return to work, highlighting the condition’s significant economic burden. Healthcare utilization was high, with 70% of patients requiring outpatient visits and 45% needing rehabilitation services. However, healthcare system preparedness was found to be inadequate, particularly in low-income countries, where only 40% of patients had access to necessary care. Specialized Long COVID clinics and rehabilitation programs were the most effective interventions, with 60% of patients reporting improvement. These findings underscore the urgent need for healthcare system reforms and targeted interventions to address the long-term impacts of Long COVID.

Abstract

Loneliness and social isolation have emerged as critical public health issues, particularly in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. This cross-sectional study investigates the prevalence of loneliness among adults and its association with various health outcomes, including mental health (depression and anxiety) and physical health (hypertension and cardiovascular disease). Data were collected from 500 participants through validated questionnaires, including the UCLA Loneliness Scale and the PHQ-9 for depression. Results revealed moderate levels of loneliness, with significant positive correlations between loneliness and poorer mental health outcomes (r = 0.52, p < 0.001). Furthermore, loneliness was associated with self-reported physical health issues, including hypertension (r = 0.31, p < 0.01) and cardiovascular disease (r = 0.29, p < 0.01). Multiple regression analysis identified younger age, lower socioeconomic status, and urban living as significant predictors of loneliness. These findings underscore the urgent need for public health interventions targeting at-risk populations, particularly younger adults and those in urban settings. As loneliness is increasingly recognized as a risk factor for adverse health outcomes, comprehensive strategies are necessary to mitigate its prevalence and impact. Future research should explore causal pathways and intervention effectiveness to better address this pressing public health challenge.
