Abstract

Background: Construction workers in Indonesia are among vulnerable workers of the negative impact of heat hazard from the work environment. Past research has found that more than 80% of construction workers experienced dehydration and 100% construction workers have experienced heat-related symptoms/illnesses. Objective: The purpose of this study is to analyze the correlation between dehydration (based on urine specific gravity) and heat-related symptoms/illnesses in depo Light-Rail Transit (LRT) construction workers. Methods: This study used a cross-sectional method from secondary data of work environment heat level measurement, workers’ questionnaire, and workers’ urine specific gravity in depo LRT construction 2021. Results : There is a significant correlation between workers’ urine specific gravity level and heat-related symptoms/illnesses on workers. Conclusion: Workers whose urine specific gravity level is not normal (>1,020) or experiencing dehydration, are in more risk of experiencing heat-related symptoms/illnesses compared to workers whose urine specific gravity level is normal (≤1,020) or having a good hydration status.

Abstract

An uncomfortable posture when doing work for a long duration can cause work-related musculoskeletal disorders. The purpose of this study was to determine the risk factors associated with the occurrence of symptoms of work-related musculoskeletal disorders in office workers at Institution X in 2023. This study used a cross-sectional design and the occupational posture assessment Rapid Office Strain Assessment (ROSA) method then to assess complaints of musculoskeletal disorders as a whole subjectively using the NBM (Nordic Body Map). The results showed that the level of risk of complaints of musculoskeletal disorders due to work at the intermediate level requires further investigation to make improvements. Assessment using the Nordic Body Map yielded a value of 91.40% of workers who experienced complaints of musculoskeletal the skeleton due to work The parts of the body that often experience complaints of musculoskeletal disorders due to work such as: upper neck, lower neck, back and waist Distribution of complaints felt by workers aged <40 years, based on female sex, based on the most years of service as many as 60 out of 65 work chairs were damaged in adjustable mode making workers feel uncomfortable when carrying out activities in their work area.

Abstract

Eye strain is a condition where the eyes are strained due to prolonged overuse, especially in computer-based activities. NIOSH states that about 75 - 90% of computer users who spend three hours or more complaining of visual impairment. A study by Kowalska et al (2011) on office workers who use computers intensely stated that the prevalence of eye strain in female workers was 50,7% and in men was 32,6%. This study aims to determine the relationship between illuminance, reflectance, and work area contrast on eye strain complaints in office employees at PT. X. This research was conducted from April - June 2023 with a total sample of 134 employees by simple random sampling. The design used in this research is cross-sectional and data collection is carried out by distributing questionnaires, which were adopted from Haeny (2009) and Ramadhani (2012), and direct measurements using a lux meter. Results showed that there were 113 employees (84,3%) complaining of eye strain with the most common symptom felt by them was tension in the neck and shoulders (43,3%) and the least common symptom was pain in the eyelids (8,2%). The results of bivariate analysis showed that there was a relationship between illuminance (p-value = 0,000), reflectance (p-value = 0,001), contrast (p-value = 0,027), work duration (p-value = 0,000), and age (p-value = 0,022), but there was no relationship between visual impairment (p-value = 0,749) and history of eye health problems (p-value = 0,918) to eye strain complaints.

Abstract

Stasiun Manggarai is the most active station. In January 2023, Stasiun Manggarai has 150,000 transit users and 14,000 station users per day (Fransisca, 2023). This large number of users can certainly increase the density – and according to research – density can increase the existing potential hazards and risks, including fire hazards. Therefore, this research was conducted to find out the implementation of fire protection and fire safety system at Stasiun Transit Manggarai Kereta Rel Listrik (KRL) Commuter Line Jabodetabek using a descriptive observational method with comparative approach. The author compares the results of implementing fire protection and fire safety systems at Manggarai Station with NFPA 130 and Code of Practice for Fire Precautions in Rapid Transit Systems 2022. The results of this study were obtained through interviews, document review, and observation. The research found that the proportion of implementation of fire protection and fire safety systems at the Stasiun Manggarai is 84.34% with the highest fulfillment at the percentage of 100% on Function, Reliability, and Availability of Communication and Control Systems; and Wire and Cable Requirements aspect. The lowest compliance is in the Emergency Communication System aspect with the percentage of 50%.

Abstract

Construction workers are a job with high level of risk. There are many cases of construction workers experiencing stress due to their work, even until accident occurs. Factors that contribute to the occurrence of work stress include physical hazards and psychosocial factors, but it does not rule out the possibility of influence from individual characteristics. This study aims to analyze the correlation between occupational stress and workplace accidents in construction workers at Yogyakarta – Bawen Toll Road Construction Project Package 1 (Section 1) in 2023. This research is a quantitative study with a cross-sectional study design. The factors studied included work stress levels, physical hazards in the form of work climate, psychosocial factors which were job content (task design, workload, and work schedule) and job context (role in the organization, interpersonal relationships, and job satisfaction), as well as individual characteristics that are associated with the occurrence of work accidents. A total of 260 construction workers were participated in this study. The results showed that 234 construction workers (90%) experienced moderate levels of stress and 154 workers (59.2%) experienced work accidents. A relationship was found between occupational stress and workplace accidents. Based on the results obtained, it is necessary to control the exposure to occupational stress and its factors at Yogyakarta – Bawen Toll Road Construction development project to minimize the occurrence of stress on workers and workplace accidents.
