Abstract

This study examines the concept of Wahdat al-Wujud in Ibn 'Arabi's thought and its relevance to modern Sufism. Wahdat al-Wujud is a metaphysical view that asserts that the entire universe is merely a manifestation of the singular and absolute existence of God. The research employs a qualitative method with a literature review approach to analyze Ibn 'Arabi's thought through his major works such as Futuhat al-Makkiyah and Fushush al-Hikam, and to explore criticisms of this concept, particularly from figures such as Ibn Taymiyyah. The findings indicate that Wahdat al-Wujud has not only had a significant impact on the development of classical Sufism but also remains relevant in modern Sufi practices, especially in spiritual practices that emphasize human unity and awareness of God. Despite theological criticisms, particularly concerning accusations of pantheism, Wahdat al-Wujud continues to be a foundational principle in many mystical practices and understandings within Islam. This study offers a new perspective on the application of Wahdat al-Wujud in contemporary spiritual life and its contribution to modern understandings of Sufism.

Abstract

This article discusses the concept of munasabah reconstruction in the ulumul Qur’an branch. The problem is a lack of deep understanding of this concept as well as the need for a more systematic approach to implementing it. The aim is to explore a better understanding of the concept of munasabah reconstruction and provide a clear method for applying it in the study of Qur’anic ulumul. The exegetical method used Is a comprehensive analysis of classical and modern texts that discuss munasabah in the Al-Qur’an, as well as a study of relevant methodological approaches. Through this approach, researchers identify the principles underlying the concept of munasabah reconstruction, such as the relationship between the verses of the Qur’an and the historical context and social environment at the time the revelation was revealed. The results of this research indicate that munasabah reconstruction plays an important role in understanding and interpreting the Qur’an more holistically. By applying these principles, readers can gain a deeper understanding of the messages of the Qur’an and their relevance to the contemporary context. In addition, this article also highlights the importance of developing a more systematic methodology in understanding classical concepts such as munasabah so that they can be applied more effectively in the study of Qur’anic ulumul.

Abstract

The concept of the caliphate has played a central role in Islamic political history, evolving significantly from the early classical period to contemporary times. Throughout Islamic history, the notion of the caliphate has shifted, reflecting the political, social, and cultural contexts of different eras. This evolution has sparked debate and differing interpretations among scholars, political leaders, and communities across the Muslim world. This study aims to explore the evolution of the concept of the caliphate, analyzing key case studies from classical Islamic history through to contemporary movements. The research seeks to understand how the concept has transformed over time and how these changes have influenced political thought in the Muslim world. The research utilizes a historical comparative approach, examining primary texts, political documents, and scholarly interpretations of the caliphate across different time periods. Case studies include the early Rashidun Caliphate, the Abbasid Caliphate, the Ottoman Caliphate, and modern interpretations by groups such as ISIS. A combination of qualitative content analysis and historical contextualization was applied. The study reveals that the concept of the caliphate has undergone significant ideological transformations, moving from a unifying political and religious institution in the classical period to more fragmented and symbolic representations in the modern era. Contemporary movements have reinterpreted the caliphate for political purposes, often deviating from classical principles. The evolution of the caliphate reflects broader changes in Islamic political thought, adapting to different historical and cultural contexts. This research highlights the complexity and diversity of interpretations surrounding the caliphate, emphasizing the need for nuanced understanding in contemporary discussions.

Abstract

The Tafsir Bi Al-Ra’y method, meaning interpretation of the Qur’an based on independent reasoning, has been a key approach in Qur’anic exegesis since the early days of Islamic thought. Scholars have debated its legitimacy, given its reliance on the interpreter’s reasoning. In the modern era, with new social, political, and scientific developments, Tafsir Bi Al-Ra’y has gained renewed relevance. This study examines how modern exegetes use this method to address contemporary issues while maintaining fidelity to Islamic teachings. It also evaluates the strengths and limitations of Tafsir Bi Al-Ra’y in providing relevant guidance in today’s context. The research employs a qualitative approach, comparing classical interpretations by scholars like Al-Razi and Al-Ghazali with modern figures such as Muhammad Abduh and Sayyid Qutb. Thematic analysis reveals that Tafsir Bi Al-Ra’y offers flexibility in addressing issues such as gender equality, scientific advancements, and social justice. Modern interpreters use this method to make the Qur’an’s message more relevant to contemporary society while preserving its core values. The study concludes that Tafsir Bi Al-Ra’y is a valuable tool for contemporary Qur’anic interpretation, bridging the gap between traditional Islamic teachings and modern realities, making the Qur’an more accessible to present-day challenges.
