Abstract

Banjarbaru Municipality, from a spatial perspective, has a strategic role as a primary node of commodities distribution chain in South Kalimantan Province, because it is located between two main consumption centers, that are: Banjarmasin (the biggest consumption center) and Martapura. Beside as a consumption center, Banjarbaru also plays as an agricultural production center, especially vegetables. The study is purposed to know the management of the vegetable farmer group in order to promote food security in Banjarbaru Municipality. The population in the study was vegetable farmer groups. The samples were selected trough random sampling method. Generally, the management of the vegetable farmer group is in good condition (77.84%), planning (64.66%), organizing (85.89%), actuating (77.13%), and evaluation (65.55%). This shows that farmer group management able to support food security in Banjarbaru. For better management in a vegetable farmer group, it is suggested to increase the capability of planning in yields processing and marketing; and in recording farm activities.

Abstract

This research aimed to estimate and analyse Cobb-Doglas production function of paddy farming and to evaluate return to scale of production, as well as to apply least square regression restricted by constant return to scale (CRTS) assumption. The results of estimation and analysis by unrestricted least square regression was statistically unsatisfactory. Some factors of production i.e. chemical and organic fertilizer as well as chemical pesticide were not significant. Moreover, chemical pesticide had negative elasticity of production which was implied negative marginal product and, thereby, meaning  that  the factor of production was overutilized and had negative effect to paddy production. Introducing restriction of CRTS assumption to  Cobb-Doglas production function had considerably improved the results in three things. Firstly, the existence of restriction was significant so that it was no doubt about the restriction. Secondly, all factors of production were exhibited statistically significant meaning that they had important influences to paddy production. Thirdly, the elasticity of production of all factors of production were positive and less than one. It implied that the utilizing of those factors of production were in the stage II of neoclassical production function where it was more favourable choice to operate the production operation in terms of profit maximization.

Abstract

The objectives of the research are to find out the sources of farmer’s income, investment capital needed by the farmer, to analyze factors influencing the farmer’s investment, and to identify problems faced by tidal land farmers in investing. The descriptive analysis indicated that the greatest contribution of the income of non surjan tidal land farmers and the irrigated land farmers was derived from the rice farming while the tidal land farmers with surjan system were originated from orange. The biggest capital of farming investment was the investment for land purchase, livestock, and farm equipment. It could be indicated from regression analysis that the off-farm income, the acreage, and the education level significantly and positively influenced the investment while the number of working family members and the age of farmers had negative influence. There were no significant differences in investment spending between farmers in tidal land villages and irrigated villages whereas there were significant differences between the farmers in surjan and non-surjan system villages where the farmers in the village with surjan system had smaller investment in farm equipment but bigger one in education, noneducation, and total investment than the farmers in the village with non-surjan system. The limited wage labor, skill limitation, the lack of awareness and the environmental factors were the constraints in the investment practiced by farmers in tidal land. The limited capital was the separate obstacle to the small farmers.

Abstract

Super red dragon fruit has 15 years of productive age. Thus, it is necessary to calculate cost and benefit accurately considering the huge investment on its cultivation. To know the feasibility of dragon fruit cultivation in Banjarbaru, investment criteria, ie.: net present value (NPV), Benefit Cost Ratio (BCR) and interest rate of return (/RR), are used. On discount rate 13%, NPV is positive (Rp 8,336,768,965.45), IRR is 20% and 12.19. Thus, the cultivation of super red dragon fruit is feasible

The results showed that the significant increase of soybeans price caused tofu agribusinessmen did economic adaptations by reducing number of soybeans they bought, decreasing tofu production, maintaining size and quality of tofu, and increasing selling price of tofu. By doing those things, total cost, revenue, profit and feasibility of business were decreased by Rp 81,000, Rp 6,435,000, Rp 6,354,000 and 0.03 respectively.  However, this business was still feasible to be run.
