Abstract

This study investigated prevention of suicide as perceived by educated adults in Ondo metropolis, Ondo State, Nigeria. Descriptive survey research design was adopted for this study. Population of the study consisted of all educated adults in Ondo metropolis, Ondo State. The sample comprised two hundred (200) educated adults randomly selected from the metropolis. Structured questionnaire was used as instrument to collect data for the study. Data collected was analysed using mean, ranking, t-test and analysis of variance (ANOVA). The results revealed the perception of prevention of suicide as giving people hope for a better life after current problems are resolved, developing and implementing community-based suicide prevention programmes, reducing the prevalence of conditions believed to constitute risk factors for suicide among others. The findings also revealed that gender and marital status have no significant influence on the perception of prevention of suicide (t = 2.041 and 7.142, p>0.05 respectively) while religion has a significant influence (F = 1.645, p<0.05). The study recommended that people passing through difficult situations should be given social support in order to raise their hope for a better tomorrow. Community-based suicide prevention programmes should be developed and implemented. Every level of government should work on improving the standard of living of the citizens so as to reduce the risk factors for suicide. Also, people with psychological and psychophysiological symptoms of depression should be given prompt and adequate treatment.

Abstract

This study investigates the function of family cohesion as a mediator between internal locus of control and career maturity among vocational high school students. The primary aim of this study is to examine how individuals' ideas regarding their power over their life (internal locus of control) affect their preparedness to make career decisions and the degree to which familial harmony and support mediate this relationship. This study employs a quantitative methodology via a survey approach. Data were gathered from 381 twelfth-grade vocational high school students in Purbalingga Regency, Indonesia, selected through purposive sampling methods. The utilized instruments included the internal locus of control scale, the family cohesion scale, and the career maturity scale, all of which had undergone validation and reliability testing. Path analysis techniques were employed to evaluate the proposed mediation model. The research findings demonstrate that an internal locus of control significantly enhances professional maturity. Another key conclusion is that family cohesion notably mediates the association between internal locus of control and vocational maturity. Students with robust self-efficacy will exhibit enhanced career maturity, a phenomenon further amplified by a coherent and supportive familial context. This study concludes that family cohesion significantly mediates the impact of internal locus of control on the career maturity of vocational high school students.
