Abstract

This study examines the concept of Islamic education curriculum and its fundamental principles from the perspective of the Qur’an and Hadith. The study responds to the need for an Islamic curriculum grounded in the primary sources of Islam amid the dichotomy of knowledge, secularization tendencies, and changing demands of modern education. It employed a qualitative library research design with a normative-theological approach. The Qur’an and Hadith served as primary sources, while relevant books, journal articles, and academic works were used as secondary sources. Data were collected through documentation and analyzed descriptively and qualitatively through inventory, classification, interpretation, and conclusion drawing. The findings show that the Islamic education curriculum is a value system grounded in tawhid, holistic and integrative in nature, and directed toward the development of insan kamil, a balanced person in intellectual, spiritual, emotional, and social dimensions. Its six main components include objectives that balance worldly and hereafter-oriented goals, integrated religious and general knowledge, flexible and humanistic methods, educators as role models, learners as individuals with innate potential or fitrah, and evaluation covering cognitive, affective, psychomotor, and spiritual dimensions. The concept is also relevant to student-centered learning, lifelong learning, character education, and authentic assessment.

Abstract

Islamic education aims for more than just the transfer of knowledge; it seeks to cultivate individuals who possess faith, knowledge, noble character, and spiritual awareness. However, in the evolution of modern education, the concept of Islamic education has often been narrowed to emphasize the aspect of instruction (ta’lim), while the dimensions of holistic nurturing (tarbiyah) and the cultivation of proper conduct (ta’dib) receive less attention. This study aims to analyze the concepts of tarbiyah, ta’lim, and ta’dib from the perspective of Islamic literature and to examine the relevance of integrating these three elements to establish a holistic Islamic educational paradigm. A qualitative approach utilizing library research methods was employed. Data were gathered from the Qur’an, Hadith, classical texts, books, and relevant scholarly journals. Data analysis was conducted using content analysis, involving the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that tarbiyah focuses on the comprehensive nurturing and development of human potential; ta’lim centers on the transmission and mastery of knowledge; and ta’dib emphasizes the cultivation of proper conduct (adab) and moral character (akhlaq). Although these three concepts differ in their specific emphases, they complement one another within the unified paradigm of Islamic education. The integration of tarbiyah, ta’lim, and ta’dib enables an Islamic educational approach that balances intellectual, spiritual, and moral aspects in the formation of a refined, civilized individual (insan beradab)

Abstract

The peci (fez-like cap) has long been regarded as a symbol of religious, particularly Muslim, identity. However, during the Indonesian national movement (1908–1945), the peci underwent a transformation in meaning, shifting from a religious to a national identity, as it became closely associated with movement figures such as Sukarno, Mohammad Hatta, and Buya Hamka. This article aims to reconstruct the history of Peci M Iming, a peci brand from Bandung established in 1918 on Groote Postweg (now Jalan Ahmad Yani), as part of that transformation. The study employs the historical method (heuristics, criticism, interpretation, and historiography), supplemented by an interview with the fourth-generation heir of the M Iming business, and is analyzed through Clifford Geertz's theory of culture, enriched by Anthony D. Smith's theory of national identity and Benedict Anderson's concept of imagined community. The findings show that Peci M Iming grew from a home business with a single sewing machine into a shop known for its opal shape, ship-inspired model, and Kembang Bandung motif, along with M Iming's authentic hand-stitched signature. The study also identifies four circumstantial facts—the shop's proximity to the sites of Sukarno's movement activities in Bandung, testimony from the heir's family, the coincidence between the business's golden era and Sukarno's presidency, and similarities in cap motifs—that strengthen the argument linking Peci M Iming to the cap worn by Sukarno, including at the 1955 Asian-African Conference. The study concludes that Peci M Iming is not merely a local craft heritage of Bandung, but also a witness to, and part of, the long process of Indonesian national identity formation.
