Abstract

Environmental degradation and unsustainable tourism practices remain critical global challenges, particularly as tourism activities increasingly involve younger generations. Education-based tourism has emerged as a strategic approach to fostering environmental awareness by integrating learning experiences into tourism activities. This study aims to analyze the role of education-based tourism in enhancing environmental awareness among the younger generation through a systematic review of empirical and conceptual studies. The research employed a qualitative literature review design, analyzing peer-reviewed journal articles, conference proceedings, and book chapters related to educational tourism, ecotourism, and environmental education. Data were analyzed using thematic content analysis to identify dominant patterns, outcomes, and challenges associated with education-based tourism initiatives. The results indicate that education-based tourism significantly contributes to improving environmental knowledge, attitudes, and pro-environmental behaviors among young participants through experiential learning, contextual education, and direct interaction with natural and cultural environments. Furthermore, education-based tourism supports sustainable tourism development by strengthening environmental responsibility and community engagement. However, challenges related to program design, target group specificity, and integration into formal education systems persist. This study concludes that education-based tourism is an effective instrument for increasing environmental awareness among the younger generation and recommends the development of structured, context-sensitive, and participatory tourism education programs to maximize long-term impacts.

Abstract

Village tourism has emerged as a strategic instrument for fostering community-based economic independence, particularly in rural areas of developing countries. Indonesia has extensively adopted the Community-Based Tourism (CBT) approach to empower local communities, optimize local resources, and promote sustainable development. However, despite the growing number of tourism villages, many still face challenges related to governance, community participation, human resource capacity, and economic sustainability. This study aims to synthesize and analyze strategic village tourism management practices that promote community-based economic independence through the CBT framework. Using a qualitative systematic literature review of 40 peer-reviewed journal articles and conference proceedings published between 2016 and 2023, this study applies thematic analysis to identify dominant strategies, institutional patterns, and success factors. The findings reveal that effective village tourism management is driven by five interrelated strategies: participatory governance, local economic empowerment, institutional strengthening, innovation-based product development, and multi-stakeholder collaboration. The study also highlights the importance of local wisdom, financial transparency, and community ownership in sustaining economic benefits. This article contributes theoretically by consolidating fragmented CBT literature into an integrated strategic framework and practically by offering policy-relevant insights for village tourism managers and policymakers. The findings support the role of CBT as a viable pathway toward inclusive and sustainable rural economic independence.

Abstract

Cultural tourism has become a strategic instrument for preserving local traditions amid rapid globalization and socio-cultural transformation. Traditional villages in Indonesia represent living cultural landscapes where customs, rituals, architecture, and local wisdom continue to evolve alongside tourism development. This study aims to analyze how cultural tourism contributes to the preservation of local traditions in Indonesian traditional villages while identifying strategies that balance cultural continuity and tourism sustainability. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, this research synthesizes findings from multiple case studies across Indonesia, including Sade, Penglipuran, Kemiren, Cireundeu, Pedawa, and other traditional villages documented in recent scholarly literature. Data were collected through systematic literature analysis of peer-reviewed journals indexed nationally and internationally and were analyzed using thematic content analysis. The results indicate that cultural tourism plays a dual role: it strengthens cultural resilience through ritual revitalization, community participation, and intergenerational knowledge transfer, while simultaneously posing risks of commodification and cultural simplification. However, community-based tourism, local wisdom integration, and customary governance mechanisms significantly mitigate these risks. This study concludes that cultural tourism can serve as an effective tool for preserving local traditions when managed through participatory, culturally sensitive, and sustainability-oriented frameworks. The findings contribute to the discourse on sustainable cultural tourism and offer practical insights for policymakers, local communities, and tourism planners.

Abstract

The rapid development of digital technology has significantly transformed destination marketing strategies in the tourism industry. Among emerging technologies, Virtual Reality (VR) has gained increasing attention due to its ability to deliver immersive, interactive, and emotionally engaging experiences for potential tourists. This study aims to examine the utilization of Virtual Reality in destination marketing within the digital era by synthesizing empirical findings from prior academic studies. Using a qualitative literature-based research design, this study systematically reviews and analyzes peer-reviewed journal articles and scholarly book chapters related to VR applications in tourism marketing. The analysis focuses on the role of VR in shaping destination image, enhancing tourist engagement, and influencing behavioral intentions. The findings indicate that VR contributes positively to destination marketing by strengthening emotional involvement, perceived presence, information quality, and visit intention. However, the effectiveness of VR varies depending on content design, level of interactivity, and user characteristics. The study concludes that Virtual Reality serves as a strategic marketing tool that complements traditional promotional methods rather than replacing them. This research provides theoretical contributions to digital destination marketing literature and offers practical insights for destination marketing organizations in adopting VR-based promotional strategies in the digital era.

Abstract

The post-pandemic era has reshaped global tourism dynamics, influencing international tourists’ perceptions of destination attractiveness. Indonesia, as one of the leading tourism destinations in Southeast Asia, has implemented various recovery strategies to restore tourist confidence. This study aims to analyze international tourists’ perceptions of Indonesia’s tourism attractiveness after the COVID-19 pandemic. This research uses a quantitative approach through survey distribution to international tourists visiting Indonesia in 2023–2025. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical methods. The findings show that cultural authenticity, natural landscape attractiveness, health safety assurance, and digital tourism services significantly influence tourist perceptions. However, infrastructure inequality and service quality inconsistency remain challenges. The study concludes that Indonesia’s tourism competitiveness in the post-pandemic era depends on integrated strategies combining sustainability, digital transformation, and service standardization. These findings contribute to tourism recovery policy development and destination marketing strategies in emerging tourism economies.
